Thanks cherished! With the prefolds, are they basically like the old terry towelling nappies but pre-made into the right shape? Or are they the ones that look all fancy? Do all modern cloth nappies need the covers, or are any of them just use as they are? Um, and what are the pocket ones lol?

You will need a cover to waterproof the nappy so yes you will need covers for the old terry towelling type of material. That type of fabric will also feel very wet against bubs skin so a stay dry liner will also be a good idea. I found that the microfibre prefolds I have they made the covers wet to touch on the inside so the cover took longer to dry, again another reason I needed more covers. The bamboo prefolds don't make the covers wet at all really maybe just ever so slightly damp but I still don't reuse them straight away I alternate with maybe 3 covers at a time. Oh back to my point lol... the terry fabric will make the cover really wet on the inside so you'll need to make sure you have enough covers to alternate to allow them time to dry. Even though it sounds like you aren't using prefolds as such you'll still need a cover over the nappies. My pocket nappies are like a nappy made in the right shape which have microfleece on the inside (stay dry) and the outer layer is PUL (waterproof) in between the 2 layers is a pocket where the absorbent insert goes, either bamboo, microfiber etc, whatever you want. I will be able to use all my prefolds that I am using now as stuffers in those pocket nappies. HTH :)

I read a blurb from cosmo pregnancy and didn't find anything incredibly detailed or informative.
DD's stash is about 30 odd but she is an incredible piddler and that includes extras in case she gets a nasty tummy bug, it takes longer to dry due to weather or she poos right after a nappy change. I generally give the nappy insert a quick rinse if DD is teething or it's extra soggy prior to throwing in the bucket. Also in the warmer weather it stops the bathroom smelling like a public toilet block. I use OSFM because I have only found one type that seems to fit whether she is about to growth spurt or when she slims down post growth spurt.

well DS has only ever worn 5-10 nappies a day coz he wasnt NB when i started he has about 20 from the last time i counted plus 2 night nappies so around 4 days worth on average
DD wore flats for about a week just the flanny ones most hospitals use theres about 20 of them she probably gets changed about 10 times a day shes already stopped pooing at night so i use a OSFM All in 2 which gets her through the night just will need nights very soon lol and we are almost running out when we get rain for a couple of days i have about 5 NB covers and a couple of smalls and thats working well for us but shes started out peeing the prefolds so we are moving onto BBH magicalls omg i love them and they will last a while coz they are fitting on the tightest setting and shes 4.3 kgs but for a just NB prefolds and covers work best coz u can get a better fit

oh my god..... thanks for asking the questions, its like you read my mind!! Although i am still confused as to what to use, where to buy, which brand etc etc
I have a friend who can get me discounted huggies newborn nappies and am still tossing up whether to just use them first til i get the hang of it all (i.e. the WHOLE baby thing) and then maybe move to cloth of some description. It is just so damn confusing!!!!
Okay haven't read the replies but wanted to quickly answer your questions!
I think 70 is a huge number of nappies to start off with. I have about maybe 8 sized MCNs that Moo fits in right now, maybe 10 one size fits all and another 6 that he's grown out of.
I wash every couple of days. I have enough to do this and still keep him in cloth. His nappies go into a lidded bucket with no water or anything until I wash them. Normal wash and a bit of sunshine does the trick. Sometimes I wash nappies every day but only if he's having a pooey day or if I throw a few in with the clothes! Moo goes through about 5 nappies per day at the most but he is now over 15 months old. When he was a newborn he'd have at least 12 changes per day which is normal. I don't have him in cloth at night, only sposies.
I kept Moo in sposies until he was about 6 weeks old. This was because he pooped at least twice every single feed! I would change him halfway through his feed (in the hope that he didn't poop again!) and again once he finished the feed! But changing him was so easy as I'd just lay him down in front of me where I was feeding in bed.
Thanks again everyone! I went on the Baby Beehinds website, and I can already feel an addiction coming on lol. I'm getting the hang of it now I reckon, have figured out what fitteds, all in ones etc are. Hooray!
we mostly use terry squares, and we have 40 of them - but they get used as perking rags, floor protectors during no-nappy and massage time, and just about everything else.
and we have 10 cheapie MCNs too. they're one-size-fits-all, and we don't plan on getting any bigger ones - these should be fine until he's toilet trained.
all up, we paid around $110 for the lot.
as for what we do with the cloths, we dry pail them - as in, we have two buckets with lids, we put the nappies in there as soon as they come off, the lid goes on, and then when the bucket gets full (every other day) or if he does a particularly bad poo, off to the wash they go!!
we occasionally use disposables, if we're going to be out and about for more than a few hours, and aren't going to be somewhere we're happy to be carting around dirty cloth nappies ...
I preferred to do a load every day when I was at home with him, but DH prefers to do a bigger load every other day, rather than a little load each day. totally up to you.
overnight, we use the mcn with two thick pads - and he sleeps 10-12 hours.
when he was first born, and still doing voernight feeds, we changed him before feeding, because feeding would send him off to sleep ... so you don't want ot be waking him up at that point by undressing and changing him!! :lol:

Now I know how easy they are I wish I had started earlier!
So far I have ten osfm and about 10-15 Terry flats that I use just around home. Still is sposies overnight tho. Seeing as were a late starter I don't know if it's worth getting overnight nappies... But I'll probably end up changing my mind knowing me :)
Are the terry flats easy to use? Do you just fold them up, use a snappy and a cover? I know they'd be cheaper, but I reckon it'd be easier to go with the ones that just snap on
Maybe the 70 was if you're going to use a once-a-week nappy washing service?

Kaytee - yes, it's easy! they dry so quickly, and if you fold them when you're putting them away, then it's just as easy as using MCN.
I should have thought of that. Those are the terry towelling ones my friend used but she was fed up with her son wiggling and they leaked. She got 90 to start with then I told her about MCNs and she ditched them :lol::
I don't think I had 70 when I had 2 in nappies! Maybe close but that's only because buying them is addictive!!
Lol JM and I can see how they become addictive, I don't even have a baby yet and I already want them all! Think the price might limit me to start with though. Thanks for the tips on the terry flats - might get some at least for spew cloths and stuff lol. Can I use normal covers with those or do they need to be those plastic pilcher things? And would they leak more because they don't have the elastic?
Plastic is no good because it doesn't brethe . I use PUL and fleece covers. Lots of people use wool but I dont like wool myself.
I used flats fir dd1, she was tiny so that is all That fitted. But with dd2 I got some bamboo fitteds (bambams) and they were awesome. No leaked great absorbency. I used mainly fleece covers.
I definately had a few leaks with flats but you soon learn a good fold to keep them in. The covers catch what tue nappy misses most ofthe time. :lol:
Yep!! But because we only use them when we're buming around home I don't bother with a cover, I just change them more regularly. They do dry very quick, and they're a cheap way to bulk up your stash :):
