Baby doesn't like Amber bracelet

My sister has officially the most placid baby ever. She started drooling everywhere a couple weeks ago, so I told her about amber teething necklaces, and she went out and bought one as it looked like teething was imminent.

The most placid baby in the world turned into just about the grumpiest, grizzly baby in the world the day after my sister put the anklet on her. We didn't make the connection until she finally had a great day, and then we realised the anklet had been off. C has left it off ever since, and placid baby is back - still drooling, still showing all the other signs of teething, but not grizzly at all.



Just wondering if anyone else has a baby that hated the amber, and why it might have happened?

No real experiences re this.... But wanted to say that there is no real scientific evidence about amber for teething... S if its not working take it off.. In fact there is more danger in wearing them, than there is evidence for its effectiveness....

Surprises me how many educated women use them, when the science is so limited.....

Maybe the baby just doesn't like the feel of the bracelet in ankle, e.g. any bracelet rather than it be to do with it being Amber. I hate wearing rings / bracelets myself and can imagine might make me grumpy.

And look at all those educated people who believe in God, especially when the science is so limited to prove he even exists.

Evidence or not they worked wonders for my girls, I think educated women can make a choice as to what works for them... If we all dismissed ideas based on current scientific evidence we would never advance in the world!

Sorry BC - in regards to your question I think some kids just don't like bracelets etc, my girls loved theirs and had no issue what so ever, a friends son would yank at his all the time then grizzle because he couldn't get it off.

Gosh if we waited around until science proves everything...

Just because no scientific evidence doesn't mean it doesn't work...

My DD2 hated cloth nappies when she was a small baby and would grizzle all day if I put them on her. My guess is that babies are people with their own comfort preferences.

I agree, maybe it is just the feel of it??? My DD is 5 and has had hers on from birth. A necklace not a bracelet. (I used to put hers around her ankle at night in her sleeping bag) I had absolutely no issues with teething. But who knows, maybe i wouldnt have anyway?? My DS on the other had... I didnt know about them then, and he was a nightmare!!

For me, the necklace is now part of her. In her whole life she has only had it off once when she had surgery, and the occasional hour or two for various reasons (came undone etc) She says she hates it off. I have moved her on to a larger size because she loves it so much. She says it makes her feel happy. Again no scientific evidence for that, but that's just what she says.

As for science, I prefer to read my baby, over reading whether or not science has proven or disproven something

No baby has EVER been harmed wearing amber and its been used for centuries, especially in Europe where it originated from (Baltic). In fact many cultures use standard jewellery and accessories on their babies but they are fine.

So many mothers do rave about them but it doesn't work for *every* baby. So if they want to use it, great, if it works, even better, less need for pharmaceuticals which do affect the body.

OH - check out bikes or balloons on that product safety website - warns of death for that too

Sorry. I really didn't mean to be offensive. It just surprises me. The link between a necklace and teething doesn't work in my brain.

as with all things typed from a keyboard, there is no tone, pitch etc. I think the 'offensive' part was the implication that you can't understand how so called 'educated women' believe it works ( therefore implying that we can't be all that well educated!?) well that was my take on it anyway :?

It could just be coincidence, or it could be bub doesnt like wearing the bracelet.

My 9mth old wears the necklace, doesnt guarantee a calm happy baby but he cut a tooth without too much trauma so who knows.

And FWIW, any parenting decision you make can be supported or disproved by any number of "scientific" research papers found on Google. Doesnt mean either side is right or wrong; as a parent you have to risk assess whether whatever your researching is beneficial for you or not by figuring out how trustworthy said scientific research is.

Yeah I suppose she just didn't like the chunky beads. She wears a little gold bracelet with no trouble, so it's obviously not jewellery in general. I was more worried that whatever it is that makes it work was actually hurting her.

Oh yes, as soon as I saw the posts I knew exactly why people were offended. Nothing else I can say apart from I really didn't mean it that way.

And it's not like I have never done something that doesn't have scientific proof - again, I just meant - as it isn't really evidence based, if it's not helping - take it off. I wouldn't say that if it was antibiotics for example - as we know for sure they work - they have strong medical evidence for their effectiveness.

Anyway... If I over explain this I will probably just dig my heels in further... So let's just go with it was baby brain that wasn't thinking before I pressed post.....

And for what it's worth keike, I just wondered if she found the necklace uncomfortable - after all it's something new around her neck (I don't like necklaces up around my neck either) so maybe it just feels different.

Sorry for the hijack. Just a question: how come you can get these necklaces for such little money? I'm from the baltic region myself and all my grandmothers/aunties etc wear amber, but back home just a bracelet already costs over a hundred euros. Necklaces are a few hundred. So if it is the same amber, how can they sell it so cheap in oz? Not complaining , just genuinly curious! All I ever could afford was a measly tiny pair of earrings... Hahaha
