Janie - where did you go? I'm at my wits end and considering 'sleep school' if I can find one that seems gentle.
Hope you're still getting good results!
Just wanted to thank everyone for their wise words and encouragement on the issue of sleep and settling. Every time someone says to me "Oh, he should be sleeping better than that!" I have a renewed crisis of confidence and start thinking about sleep school or stressing to my partner about it. Then I read all your posts and am reminded of why I want to do things by instinct and not by others' rules. I don't know how many more times I can politely ignore the old "You're making a rod for your back!" comment either!!! What is so freakin' wrong with attending to your child when they are upset?! And whole-hearted agreement on the eye contact thing. A few lovely times I have sung Jethro to sleep with full eye contact, and the sight of his trusting gaze on mine, gradually drifting into sleep, is magical! Why would I deny either of us that pleasure?!
Keep up the great, hands-on parenting guys! I love knowing that there is such a network of like-minded parents out there!
I went to O'Connell family centre and they do not practice controlled crying in any form. They never make you leave your baby to cry. They want you to respond immediately to your baby and comfort and support them while they cry. Mainly patting and shushing but also picking up and cuddling and rocking to calm them. It is tiring - but not as tiring as I imagine standing outside the room listening to your baby cry. Staff were just fantastic.
Tried to post a little while ago but the forums were down and I've just got back on line.
I still haven't heard back from O'Connell :wall: but have been using some techniques from the Queen Elizabeth Centre website - they have a series of podcasts on there. It helped enormously after a hard first night and we saw some great improvement. DS now goes to bed awake both during the day and at night. He still wakes but is settling much faster and not needing to be picked up (mostly). Some regression with eye teeth coming thru - 4 nights of hell - but back on track now.
"I went to a Tweddle sleep school today and wasnt very impressed."
Why do you said that you are not impressed with the Tweddle sleep school, can you explain what do you mean.
