I don't really have a set housework thingy. I just do what needs to be done. I remember when we had our first and when he was 9 months old we were both working full time. Dh would mow the lawns and do the cars on his one day off and we would both do a general tidy up most days..

When I finished work and stayed home (11months old) Dh would still do the yards and cars and I would do most of the inside stuff but I did find it hard to get a lot done when Ds was running/crawling around

* filing/paperwork - as required but DP's filing/paperwork weekly, his invoices were daily though

DP was working 7 days a week and i was doing all this myself, he would mow the paddock and help with some outside stuff when he had the time but everything else was up to me.
I found it so damn hard when he would come home and ask what i had done all day, there were days where i could get NOTHING done and it made me feel like crap that what i WAS doing wasn't being appreciated.

I often think it's hard to explain what we do at home, unless your home doing it then i think it's hard to put into perspective, DP would come home the girls would smile and turn into angels and he'd think i had lost the plot.
My house

We have set up a house work roster only recently now that DD is 16 mths old and with twins due in a couple of months we needed something to give us a guide as to what to do.

Even though I am the SAHM my DH does alot of the general housework in the evening when he gets home from work...

Mondays: Washing - Our clothes (this is playgroup day so don't do too much else) - DD Bath night
Tuesdays: Washing for DD and dusting when DH gets home - Will be bath night for twins
Wednesdays: Washing for new babies (while they aren't here I'm starting to wash and prepare all items needed) - DD Bath night
Thursday: Washing our clothes and DH vacuum's & mops when he gets home - WIll be bath night for twins
Friday: Washing DH's work shirts & Washing for DD- DD Bath Night, cleaning Bathroom & Kitchen
Saturday: Ironing and DH will do work in the garden ie: mow lawns etc
Sunday: Family Day

DH will generally also cooked dinner 5 out of 7 nights as well and we alternate washing the dishes. Every evening once DD is in bed I will do a general tidy up and pack up her toys and get everything put back in order for the next day.

During the day if I notice things need doing I will put the carpet sweeper through and do a generaly tidy and after each of DD's meals I will clean the floor in the kitchen. I also will fit in with the housework roster time to go grocery shopping and to also take DD out for the day etc.

We have found that having the roster gives us a good idea of what needs to be done and as we are doing everything on a regular basis, we find that it only probably takes 10-20 minutes to do our allocated chores for the day instead of having to spend hours doing it all on one day.

Being a SAHM is not easy and sometimes things happen during the day that don't go to plan that is why both DH and I share the housework as even though he is going to work everyday I'm still doing a full time job being home looking after DD.

I do whatever needs doing! On average it would be the same as other people - sheets once a week etc. but if the toilets are gross they get done , if the floors are gross they get swept(3 times a day on average!) vacuuming every few days as needed. Washing I sometimes let build up but we don't have a dryer so I try not to let it build up too much - usually one load a day.
Outside time - every day and I am making an effort this winter to go out rain, hail or shine!

Just thought I'd mention that DS is 6 months old, and I'm noticing he's a lot more demanding now! (plus, need to watch now he's on the move :) )

*cleaning basins- before each kitchen use, and before DS bath
*cleaning shower- when I remember- we're also on bore water, so when the colour is coming through!

*washing other clothes- couple loads a day
*full cooked dinner- every night, mind you, they're not the extravagance they used to be!

*walking dogs- she comes with us on our walk, or is at work
*vacuum floors- this is where it's starting to get tricky... DS has started waking when I vacuum while he's asleep, and he's now scared of the machine when he's awake. So, it's an effort with him in one hand, the vacuum in the other. I'm halfway through and it's taken me a week, and we have TINY place! Have tried a carrier, and he still cries...
*sweep/mop floors- kitchen every day
*vacuum couch- see vacuuming above, used to be a lot more regular!

Some weeks I'm more on top of it than others. I know the weeks I'm not on top of it, and it irks me as much as it irks DH. So if he comments on it, it's all I can do not to hand him my roster and switch it for his. If he had the ability to feed DS, I'd swap his job for a week (it used to be MY job!) so he could see how hard it actually is to get things done!

Oh man if DH ever got narky at me and "expected" me to do the things you have on your list by myself AND be the Primary carer for our child I would slap him senseless and walk out.

Our house if FAR from spotless, there is always crap on the dining table, clothes/nappies drying on clothes horses, dead flwoers in vases, beds unmade and piles of washing needing doing or putting away BUT I have a happy child who goes out and explores every day, we have a few scheduled activities a week and lots of animals to keep us entertained and IF I get a chance to have a sit and a quiet coffee when she has her ONE day sleep I take it and enjoy it.

Dh also works weekends and has late nights/Looong days as part of his job and I can assure you days when I don't get his help I go flat stick all day.

I think you owe your boy a case of beer (or whatever he drinks) and a blinking pat on the back for the AWESOME job he is doing day in and day out with your child, not reprimanded for the things he doesn't get done.

Looking after a 9 month old does not compare to looking after a 10 week old and the older your child gets the more time will be demanded of your hubby and the LESS he will get done.

Cut him some slack hun.

Your both doing great but just because he is at home doesn't mean he has all the time in the world. If he spends time playing maid thats time away from doing things with your kids ... what would you prefer?

I was a complete basket case for the first 12 months of DD1's life. I did not really start to pull things together till I found a small amount of work. For some reason that one day a week at a job and DD1 in childcare made a huge difference to how I coped and how I organised myself. So maybe your DH needs a day or two out in the workforce, plus the extra money could then be used to pay for a gardener, or a cleaner once a fortnight. This is only a suggestion as really for my family it was a lifesaver as my DH was also working horrendous hours at the time.

ouch :o I think there's a serious miscommunication here - I do truckloads of housework, I cook big batches of food on the weekend so DH can just reheat food for him and DS to eat when he's too busy to prepare something fresh, I do all the organising for groups we're involved in and our social calendar, we do the big shops together, I often sort and fold 5 or 6 loads of dry washing on the weekend, I do our personal accounts, and loads and loads of other stuff. Until this month, I also have been expressing up to 6 times daily in addition to bf DS which is exhausting and requires a lot of phone calls and planning in advance in my area of work to have somewhere private and the actual time it takes.

DH gets time off for himself during the week, by dropping DS off at my SIL's (the nice one) and meeting friends to play tennis whenever he likes, and he plays computer games, watches TV or DVDs most days during the day, and he is also doing an Arts degree for fun (ie: not because it's going to lead to a specific career) and that was a *big* joint decision, because it costs hundreds of dollars per year for his books etc, and cash is very tight.

I am not making demands - the entire point of this thread is because I have not been saying things to DH because I do not want to inadvertently be unrealistic or unkind to my wonderful DH. But equally, I like clean undies, so I thought a good starting point would be finding out what others do and don't get done, what you think is important, and where that balance might be.

DH and I agreed about 13 years ago that I would be the breadwinner, and he would be the full time carer and he would write. He hasn't been writing for the past few years, so that changed into that he would work from home a couple of hours per night, and a bit on the weekends (and I would take care of the kids, because I would be home!). Then he wasn't able to find anything he could really do from home, so he decided he would be domestic head honcho. And that hasn't really happened.

He really doesn't want to go back to work, so it's on me to earn more so he doesn't have to - thus my ridiculous hours, and multiple interstate and occasional overseas trips away from my baby :( but I'm pleasing clients and work, which should translate to enough income that he can stay home, as he wishes.

And while I have no issue with DH reading his National Geographic and getting up another level on his game, and perfecting the bend it like beckham move and beating my Words With Friends score (again) I would (still) like some clean undies. Please. And maybe some eggs on toast with Onyx.

I think your dh probably has to spend a lot of energy keeping himself entertained too. It's hard being isolated with a baby...housework just adds to the loneliness...

It's a very long day for both of you...can I ask how dh copes being alone for so long? I go batty when dh works late and that's usually only once a fortnight.

This baffles me!! When I was at home, I loved going to library group and the MHCN group and play group at church etc - but DH doesn't really go. He likes his own company, he plays tennis with a couple of blokes reaonably frequently, but otherwise they stay at home. I encourage him to get some fresh air and walk to the park or walk the dogs to the shops etc, but he doesn't get around to it. I call him a couple of times a day to see how he is, but he doesn't have much other contact...

He's described it as being still in "weekend" mode, rather than getting into a new routine yet (again, thus my initial questions!) ... I'm a little concerned that he might be getting a bit depressed, but he doesn't think so. He's just very content with his own and J-man's company.

He went to the MHCN playgroup a few times, but even thoguh the girls were welcoming, he kind of felt like he was cramping their style a bit in terms of what they would and wouldn't say and do in front of him, so he hasn't gone in months.

I've also told him about the Reservoir Dads group, but he says it's too far away.

I want to encourage him more to go to at least 1 or 2 things a week, for J-man's sake if not his own, but I really don't want it to come of as a reprimand, IYKWIM.

But please keep the replies coming :) I'm getting a good idea that there is no such thing as "normal" but it's really good to see how you ladies do things. I'm such a "routine" person, it's really, really helpful to see how people like DH might prioritise things and get them done, without a "on Mondays, we ***, on the second Tuesday of each month we ***," etc.

bathing dogs - As needed. Long haired gets a bath every time she gets a hair cut, short haired one gets a bath if she smells and its a nice day.
shopping - Groceries, once a week. Anything else, I try to do it on the same day as groceries. Not a fan of shops.
cleaning toilets - Once a week
cleaning basins - Once a week
cleaning bath/shower - Bath once a week, shower, ugh, my most hated job. Probably every couple of weeks

sweeping the porches - Back deck swept two or three times a week, front porch gets vaccumed once a week.

Wow peanutter!!! You are doing a phenomenal job managing those hours.
My reply is a bit off on another tangent rather than addressing your list. I really struggled to adapt when DD1 was born as I just couldn't keep up with things as I had previously. DH and I work in demanding jobs too and we had previously applied very high expectations to our housework and lives outside work as well. I am (was) quite regimented and organised - so went to the gym every day, cleaned the house thoroughly twice a week and shopped on Sunday for the week ahead as well as renovating and socialising. In retrospect it was a wee bit OTT - but there we were! So add into this a freaked out control freak mum who had a non sleeper of a baby, DH got sick and was unwell for months and I went back to work PT. Messy.....you bet!
The arrival of DD2 meant that we HAD to reassess and whilst every now and then it gets to me I have resolved to keep my house manageable and focus on keeping the kids (big and little) happy!
To do this - I have a stash of heat and eat meals in the freezer, so in addition to the big cook ups I have fish fillets/chicken breast and some bought frozen meals. Not ideal but always there for the days it gets too much. We have readjusted our budget to get a cleaner - have luckily managed to get an older gent who is a family friend for a great price. I was really resentful of having to do all the kid wrangling, work 0.5+ and do all the cooking so this makes ME feel better. I also really resented spending all my time home, cleaning etc. So try really hard to make the day's I am home about being fun.
Realistically this means our cars haven't been washed in 2 years and the house is surface cleaned but could do with a massive spring clean (windows...hmm).
Daily I cook and tidy up a bit before bed when the kids are in the bath (this is not every day tho). I feel for your DH as I think being at home would be hard as a man as the avenues for socialisation are tricky at best. I know Dh here struggles with one day at home a fortnight, lol!

•bathing dogs - get someone to come about every 2 or 3 months
•shopping - depends on what is going on. Some days I'll go to the supermarket a few times or I can go days without leaving. Never get to the shopping centre these days unfortunately unless I'm on my own!
•cleaning toilets - every week at least, DS has discovered toilets recently
•cleaning basins - weekly
•cleaning bath/shower - when I do the basins etc
•dishes (by hand) - at least 3 times a day, I can't stand dishes
•washing cloth nappies - every couple of days
•washing other clothes - I do at least a load everyday
•full cooked dinner - probably 3 or 4 times a week as we always get leftovers
•walk with LO - I wish I walked more but with the hot weather it's been hard. I aim for every morning though.
•walking dogs - DH does this when he can
•vacuum floors - every couple of days due to DS liking to eat on the run all the time as well as shaggy cats!
•sweep/mop floors - mop probably weekly, maybe fortnightly
•vacuum couch - when I do the floors
•wash sheets - LO - weekly
•wash sheets - yours! - same as DS' so weekly
•cleaning benchtops - I tidy the bench several times per day but actually CLEAN it is probably every fortnight
•cleaning stove - same as bench top
•mow lawn - DH does this
•weeding/pruning - another DH job, but I'll get out there when I can. Another thing I used to involve DS in that has fallen by the wayside now that he can run off :lol:
•cleaning the fridge - I don't even know when I last did this!
•general tidy - everyday before going to bed. I call it resetting the house so it's ready for demolition by Moo in the morning!
•cobwebbing - when I notice
•sweeping the porches - again when it's particularly bad
•cleaning the car (inside) - rarely
•cleaning the car (outer) - DH does this too
•dusting - when it's bad, or people are coming over I want to impress!
•cleaning out attic/basement/garage/etc - never! DH's domain but he has never cleaned it out either.
•filing/paperwork - I used to be so on the ball with this but at the moment I have paperwork hidden all over the place!

I find now that Moo is nearly 19 months old, a simple task can take sooo long! Especially now that he's at the stage where he wants to 'help', eg. he helps me wash the dishes which menas I fill up both sinks and give him the plastic stuff. He usually tips water out and makes a big mess so when we're finished I have to change his clothes and clean up the floor...but better than listening to him have a tantrum!

* top and tailing (facewasher to face and then bum of your LO) - Faces are wiped when they're dirty or before we go out. Have a shower daily so no need really.
* outside time with LO - Bits and pieces most days. Then some days a while in the afternoon - weather permitting, of course. Some days we go for walks around the place or too the shops during the day. We walk to and from school most days too.
* cleaning cat bowls - Usually every couple of days.
* brushing cat and/or dog - Don't brush my cat. Lol
* bathing LO - Showers are daily.
* bathing dogs - No dog. Cat doesn't get a bath. Lol
* shopping - Weekly to week and a halfly. Sometimes having to pick up bread and milk in between.
* cleaning toilets - Whenever it needs it.
* cleaning basins - I give them a really good wipe down every few days.

* vacuum floors - Twice a week, sometimes once a week, depends.
* sweep/mop floors - Whenever they need it.
* vacuum couch - I give it a bit of a once over when I've vacc'ing the rest of the house.
* wash sheets - LO - Whenever they need it.
* wash sheets - yours! - Prob every 3 weeks. Depends on the weather.
* cleaning benchtops - Few times a day.
* cleaning stove - Uh, not very often.
* mow lawn - When it gets too long and no one else has done it.
* weeding/pruning - I don't do that. Lol.

* cobwebbing - Not as often as it should.
* sweeping the porches - Nope.
* cleaning the car (inside) - Generally it gets a big clean out when we're going on long trips. I pick up rubbish/ other stuff off the floor seats, anywhere when I see it.

* dusting - hardly at all. I know, lazy.
* cleaning out attic/basement/garage/etc - N/a
* filing/paperwork - Not that often.

Sorry if DH asked me to do this I would tell him to shove it!.
My job as a SAHM is to look after the child not be a house cleaner. A SAHM is a full time job - same as yours. So I treat any house cleaning jobs as if we both worked full time as before, we share the jobs.
