I'm lucky in that we have 2 lines, a standard hills out near the shed which we use for towels, sheets etc and then we have a fold down one out under the verandah.
Funny thing is it NEVER gets folded down as it's always full :rofl:
I tend to put clothes out there even if the weather is not too great as it's quite windy here and things still tend to dry.
If the weather is really bad or the line is full then they go inside on 1 of 4 clotheshorses :redface: the only time the dryer gets used is if i have no room for towels and it's cr@ppy outside.

Currently I don't have a clothes line, so right now it is "rarely", if I did have a line, in this weather, I'd probably air but not dry.
I love hanging the clothes on the line! If the weather is nice of course, even if its cold but there is a bit of sunshine I will try and hang them out :D
Yep, I always hang on the line, unless the weather is bad and then it's either on the rope that's tied across the undercover area outside, or on the clothes horse in front of the fire (in winter!). We don't own a clothes dryer. Even if we did I don't think I'd use it, I love the smell of the clothes after they've been on the line.

We live on a dirt road, in summer the clothes are covered in dust if I put them out there. In winter it's too cold and damp to dry anything so I use the dryer or clothes horses.
We don't own a dryer by choice so all or washing gets hung on the line. If it rains, we have 2 clothes airers & a portable clothesline. It looks really messy but better than risking burning the house down imo.
I live in a windy suburb..it's great for drying clothes even in winter.
I quite often have two loads out by 9am if I am home. Sometimes dependind on the day I will put socks and jocks in the dryer.
I use a clothes horse if it's miserable outside. We have ducted heating, so if I hang up early in the day, they will be dry by the next morning.
we dont have a dryer so the line it is for us!

I line dry everything, and wouldn't buy a dryer. Like many others, I enjoy hanging out the washing, and I love the smell of sunshine on my towels when I unfold them later. Having a decent washing line in the sun and undercover space outside were 'must-haves' when we were househunting. But I guess we have predominently windy, sunny weather in Perth, with no dodgy neighbours, insignificant road dust, etc, so it's not too hard for us here.
I've got a massive covered outside line which is often full during summer... nappies, sheets, clothes, etc etc... but during winter stuff just doesn't quite get dry!
I do still put big things out there but they need to come inside to finish drying off so often my house resembles a laundry... ATM I have a queen and a single mattress protectors draped all over my dining room chairs trying to dry... :lol:
Winter we use clothes airers over the ducted heating vents. DH told me it costs $1.75 every time I run the dryer so I'm trying to stop using it... but the nappies generally still go in there.
Unfortunately we rarely use our clothesline, actually you can only use it in the warmer months... And it drives me crazy.
In the house we are in now, our backyard is surrounded by 20m+ pine trees, therefore making our yard rarely see daylight. Its forever cold out there, and nothing ever dries on the line. In summer, the later months of spring and early autumn then its fine other than that its pointless even entering the backyard.
So I use my dryer daily, I use our airer daily too. But because the airer wasnt bought with this house in mind, it actually doesnt fit in our house, every room is soo small and with the girls running around its just a barrier. So until I get a new one, our airer lives on the front verandah, which even there it takes at least four days to dry the clothes. I also use the heaters too when they are on...
I would love a clothes line, some sunshine and some drying breezes but alas, we live in an apartment.
Still 90% of the time I use the clothes horse. I use the dryer to finish towels off sometimes, if I catch them before they are dry and to dry a load if I am behind and have no room left on the horse.
I don't like the dryer for the cost, environmental impact, wear on the clothes and steaming up of the *laundry*.

I don't have a dryer so it's clothes line for us :D it's under the carport in the backyard so can use it all year round.
I picked rarely......but they always get hung on the line, just not by me :) :) :)

We've never had a dryer so it's always the line or the clothes horse. Makes it a bit difficult in winter especially when you need to wash the sheets etc and it all takes days to dry inside!
During the warmer months our washing is hung out on the clothes line (which is on its last legs atm) and cooler months I use 3 clothes airers inside. I do use the dryer sometimes but ti is mainly for the clothes that need finishing off from the airer after a few days :)
Always. We are househunting at the moment, and Hills Hoist or space for one is high on my list. We don't have a dryer, and I doubt that I'll ever want one.
Rarely to never, because our clothesline is in a stupid ass position where its in full shade by 930am every day from about April to October, and it pretty much rains during the day at some point from November to March so I've just given up. We also don't have the space for clothes horses inside and the only place for them outside means that every man and his dog can see all our washing. I used to put small things on a clothes horse on the patio until asswipes at DH's work started commenting about my underwear. Our power bill was still 15% below the average for the HLB so I figure its not costing us much more to put things in the dryer.
The clothes line, if it is raining we are lucky to have a big verandah area, so there is some twine strung up around that where I can put a few things I need urgently. Non urgent stuff goes on the clothes horse. We don't own a dryer and never have.
We never use the clothesline. But we never use the dryer either.
If we hang clothes on the clothesline our beagle likes to jump and tear them off (and tear them up!). So it doesn't get used (or at least on only very very rare occaisions). We hang all our clothes around our living area in front of the heater to dry, on clthes horses and the back of our dining chairs.

Until last year we didnt own a dryer. I use my clothes line unless its raining and then i use 3 clothes horses. the dryer has been used about 5 times since we bought it last july and thats only 2 finish off DH's work pants or if i've fallen behind in washing my cloth nappies and i'm running low lol!

dont own a dryer!!! when ours broke i decided not to get a new one!!! i live in qld, even in the winter its normally 20 degrees plus, and the times when it rains....well, things take two days to dry....never mind.
if i had cloth nappies it would probably bother me.
We have a clothes line in the garage which is good for all year round for the most part. In the summer it's beautiful and warm in there so clothes can dry really quickly (brick garage). As it gets colder it's surprising warm in there still for the most part of winter, theres a few weeks maybe months where you stuggle to get them dry out there.
I also use the little air dryers for the kids stuff and or nappies. With 3 kids we constantly have clothes around the house.
We have the dryer also and i use it for nappies mainly in the colder weather and try and use it at night only. I sometimes use it also just to finish of the clothes that were only the line.
What's cool is how the steam rises of the clothes when you hang them out on a cold morning!!
This poll is proving what I thought when I read that story in the paper yesterday, that it was a load! But then, perhaps city people with no backyards tend more to the dryer - of course the Brisbane paper seems to forget that there are more people in the state than live in Brisbane!
I use the line in spring/summer, but my timy strip of yard doesnt get sun in winter/autumn so I use the dryer full on, dont have room in my tiny flat for clothes horses everywhere
Nappies and clothes go outside on the line if the weather is fine. Sheets, too. I love the smell if you hang them out in the evening and collect them mid-morning. It smells so fresh. No fabric conditioner can beat that.
If it's raining, I have a small clothes airer and a curtain rod in the laundry where I can hang things. But if I need to do more than one load, I put things in the dryer until almost dry, then hang them to finish off (haha, the exact opposite to what many of you are doing). I find I get less wrinkles if I don't use the dryer until clothes are completely dry. I have a "iron" setting on my dryer that gets it almost dry but not bone dry. I don't iron by the way).
Beach towels go on the line, too.But bath towels go in the dryer because I hate when they're stiff like a board.
I didn't use to use the line nearly as much as I do now. I grew up in Germany and my mother had no outside hanging space whatsoever (still doesn't). So she always used the dryer and finished things off by hanging them off a pipe in the cellar. She had no space for a clothes horse either. When I lived in Sydney, I didn't have a dryer. I hated having to dry everything on the line. So when I moved to Queensland and got myself a dryer, I ended up using it all the time, like I was used to from home. I think it was when I started using cloth nappies that I thought to myself: what's the point of using cloth when I use the dryer on them all the time. Plus nothing beats the sun for stains.
I always use our line, we have one out the back and DH made a really big one in the garage so that gets a work out through winter and I have a big one in the study under the heating vent. We only ever use the dryer if something needs to be used asap which is rarely. Our dryer prob gets used a handful of times in a yr.

I had a bit of a giggle when I heard the term 'vintage clothesline' yesterday.. I never realised they were considered vintage!
I have never owed a dryer, all of our clothes/cloth nappies are dried on the clothesline or when its raining on the clotheshorse inside.
I never use my line. Feral dog, plus its really shady where it is. Nappies and the kids clothes go on a clothes airer on top of the trampoline when sunny, or in the garage. Pretty much all our stuff except non dryer friendly stuff goes in the dryer. Plus sheets and towels :)
It really is so handy. DH put screws with eyes on the ends into the brickwork and ran this heavy duty plastic covered cabling through it. We have 6 lines of it that run the width of the garage, so they can take lot's of washing.:
I do the tiniest bit of washing every week (It's only me at my house) and in winter my line doesn't get ANY sun. So I have to pop it in the drier.
In summer I hang it out on the line. My line is one of those fold out ones attached to the brick wall, and the genius that put it there put it REALLY high and I can hardly reach it, so it makes hanging out the washing sliiiightly difficult for me, being a short and all.
