TV in our schools

I am aware of my prep son
Watching a movie at school once so far this year and it was Alvin and the chipmunks. Yes I would be concerned as I am not sure what they are aiming to achieve by Disney movies. Movies for education al purposes yes, but Disney - not the best choice.

Considering a journal article I read cited that 90% of Disney movies show at least one incident of child malpractice per movie. I would suggest that children should not be watching Disney in school at all.

ETA my kids watch some Disney at home, but I choose what they watch.

I'd be talking to the teacher and further up if needed - one movie a week is too much IMO. If they need wind down time they do that in plenty of other ways. What about reading a book to them?

The class that my DS is about to start in has a box of lego and barbies etc for the kids to play with on a rainy day.

I use disney as a class tool. My 14 year olds had never heard of "brine" nor could connect it to seawater, so we watched a clip of Bedkn0bs and Broomsticks. When talking about gold being found in its native state and panning for gold, we watched some of Pocahontas. I recall some Mary Poppins with my older students.

I even used alcohol advertisements with some of my students who didn't know what a grouse was (I mean, come on, the grouse is famous, right?). That has to be more inappropriate than disney. We also watched the squirrel carling ad the same lesson, just cos I like that ad.

But I don't just watch a film for 90 minutes with a class. More than 5 minutes and you need an accompanying educational worksheet to stop them pratting about.

DS regularly did a film at his Nursery class (children from about 1-5). Friday afternoon, clearing up for the weekend, 4pm and the children were tired and over the week, as were the staff. They did TV time at the end of the day from 5.30 most days, with the option to play tidily if they didn't want to watch. That didn't worry me and DS would sometimes take in favourite DVDs from home to share with his friends (I'm the one to blame for the Spiderman fixation that went on for a couple of months!).

I have no idea what a grouse is, in Australia grouse is a slang word lol.

Oh yeah, BTN and there was one about Robinson Curouso (sp?). Anyone remember 'let's have music' - I think it was an ABC radio production, you'd tune the old radio on the wall in every week and sing along together.

Let's Sing

put on thru the PA system in each classroom (mid to late 70's for me, ha ha). We all had the book (with the lyrics and basic guitar chords). I remember "let's sing" very well. They still sell those books in the ABC shops. New one published every year.


and yes, i would be livid if my child's teacher was regularly using a Disney movie each week, for no educational reason. Disney movies i disagree with on many levels anyway, i won't have their books in my home, i really dislike how they truncate stories to such an extent, important plot and details are missing. Like the children get ripped off, too much is left out. And how the girls are portrayed in them - don't get me started. and the racism etc etc.

in high school we watched heaps of movies - even finding nemo in science! (and the princeable walked in and we paused it so she didnt know)

But in prep? erm... i think fridays we used to watch around the twist (it was grade prep/one/two) and that was half an hour or so) but i'd be talking to the teacher to see why she is useing them in a prep class.
