Sal,
I see what you are saying, i was just thinking she;d know because she's written an artical about PCOS. So she is one of the few who know much about it. So i dunno then?
Tegan, listen to Sal she knows what she is talking about.
I have also suffered PCOS & many other issues for a very long time and have had numerous specialists throughout the years. I at one stage was seeing one of the top gyno's in melbourne who was an expert in all kinds of things & who had written all kinds of articles and he made an error with me, hence the reason I do not see him anymore. The gyno I see now is fantstic but I still wouldn't accept anything he said just because he was an expert, I want evidence to back it up!
I never said she didn;t know what she was talking about! I simply just told her what my GP does. I don't think that is a crime!
And I didn't say you did. You posed a question, asked for a response from people who may know a little about the subject, then I thought you seemed a little defensive from responses like you had the answer yourself anyway.
Well my original question was why would my PCOS(if i had it) seem to disapear is all. Sorry to get you mad.
Someone raised the subject of metformin and i wanted to know what it did. That is all. I actually know nothing at all. I figured you could get diagnosed from one BT, as i have said i was only 17, how was i spose to know? I told you i have had bad experiences with GPs, maybe they should get more training before treating people?
Ok ladies, lets make sure this doesn't get into a "you said/she said" situation.
Tegan, my recommendation would be to take on board any advice you get from the girls here on BB to ponder upon, but over-arching that, I really would get yourself a referral from a GP to see a reproductive specialist. In that way, you can make a list of of all of your questions and queries that you have, discuss your individual concerns and situation with a specialist.
In that way you can get some conclusive answers, and perhaps start buidling an effective relationship with a reproductive specialist, so that any questions you have ongoing, you know you can always go to them for support/advice/questions?
HTH?
Teag-
Since having Ryley my PCOS has seemed to disappear too- my doc said to me that having PCOS seems to re-start your hormones within your ovaries coz after bubs is born they need to 'start again.'
Everything my doc said would happen (Regularish periods, pimples not as bad, less facial hair) has all happened and it seems that although i do STILL have PCOS my symptoms seem to be under control. I went from up to three months between AF to now pretty much 5-6 weeks every time.
There is a american pcos forum that i chat on that if you want to get the name just pm me or email me :)
I know what you mean by disappearing and i dont think it disappears just gets more under control.
With regard to the insulin resistance that also can be controlled and be easily not a huge part of your life anymore with having weight under control.
Hope this helps sweet!! I totally know exactly what your talking about- its happened to me too!!
Also forgot to mention that i only had a blood test and one u/s to diagnose me with pcos. I was diagnosed by a regular gp and he has been pretty spot on with everything.
the thing to remember is that PCO/S (Some people dont have the syndrome) affects everyone in a different way. Some people are overweight and hairy- like me- others are thin but just have ovarian cysts- everyone is different- maybe go and see the doc again- it is something to be happy about if AF is regular for you too (I call myself regular but they are 5-6 weekly)
What is insulin resistance? I've never heard of this?
Seems this thread got a bit complicated! Sorry, I don't mean to imply any particular doc doesn't know what they're doing. I just think it is a mistake to accept a diagnosis on a single bloodtest, especially seeing as since then you had no issue conceiving your first child, have had a change in the regularity of your cycles, and have since had the terrible misfortune to have two m/c. Seeing a reproductive specialist to find out exactly what your body is up to now seems like a great idea.
Yes sorry for this to get out of hand.
It does seem a bit fishy doesnt it? What would be the chances of getting in to see a specialst before xmas/new year?
It's when your cells no longer recognise insulin as well as they should and so your body has to produce too much insulin in order to keep normal glucose levels. It's common in women with PCOS and is the reason that many of us take metformin (Metfromin helps the insulin work better):
FYI there is also an Australian PCOS site. The Australian support group is called POSAA
Yeah thought as much!
So i have to get a referal to see one don't i? How do i go about this? Can i just ask for a referal, or do i have to explain my situation and pretty much prove it? Or a GPs all different and it depends? (sorry for so many questions 8-[ )
Sorry to bother again LOL
Ok i looked this up on POSAA site.
Well I have/had the irregular cycles and high blood testosterone levels. Theres 2 out of 3.:
You need two out of three things to be diagnosed PCOS:
Irregular or non-existent menstrual cycles from an early age
Polycystic ovaries, on ultrasound
Excessive body & facial hair or high blood testosterone levels.
Not saying yes i am right i have PCOS(wish i didnt really) But just thought that was interesting..
Hey Tegan
Yep high testosterone is a good indication.Sounds awful doesn't it.I think when I was tested I probably had higher testosterone levels than progesterone!heheMy cycles were out from an early age too.
Yes, when the doctor told me that i was horrified. I thought, OMG im turning male LOL Stupid teenage brain lol
Hehehe.......it is horrible when they tell you isn't it!Corey joked that I was more bloke then women  stupid man!
:-k Maybe that's why I have such good spatial skills LOL.
