I have heard this too... It's just bloody awful... It's insidious (& not so insidious) undermining of mothering/women's bodies. Less than 1% of women have an issue & these companies see the crack and jump in...
My friend fed her first daughter carnation milk as her MIL fed it to her two boys and "it never did them any harm"... Carnation is Nestle too I thimk yes?
Last trip to Bali my cousin proudly showed me her sample sachets of nestle formula, for her pending new arrival! I was feeding Z & she was a bit miffed by it all! She said she was told all Westerners feed their babies the bottle! I explained no, breast is best & formula is so exxy!!! She was shocked as they had gone to a private hospital & told to use bottle, like the tourists!!!!

Same..... in fact DS1 asked for Milo before and i thought, 'damn there goes another orangutan' :rolleyes: But hey, he otherwise wouldn't drink milk.... and its not my fault PND prevented me from breastfeeding past 2.5 years.
Do what you have to do. I may not be saving the orangutans but i'm saving my sanity and doing the immediate best for my family. I just can't think beyond that at this point.

I don't think milo would have palm oil in it would it? I think the palm oil issue mainly relates to Nestle chocolate. If you would like to try nestle free though would he be keen on sustagen? We drink chocolate sustagen and it's yummy. But then, I don't like malt.
Martyroshka that's a really helpful & motivating way to see it I think... Every block of Kit Kat, cup of Milo etc is another life lost... It keeps it into perspective hey? Someone/being dies for my chocolate bar... I'd never looked at it that way... :hug:

I grew up on Milo - it was the last Nestle thing I gave up, but it didn't take me long to like Ovaltine.
Ive switched to ovaltine too - I love it! Reminds me of ovaltinies we used to have in primary school :)
I don't know what Milo has in it... Loads of sugar for one I know! But it is amazing Meow how many things palm oil is in... It freaks me out when you begin to shop consciously & you look at the labels. I also personally choose not to use canola... It's in a lot too... :wall:
I occassionally buy a jar of pasta sauce to have in the cupboard to have for emergencies. Jensens is nasty oil free as far as it appears on the label...
Meow - Milo is also made from GMO crops - has been for around 10 years...

Ive tried the ovaltine switch over a while ago...someone notices it and has huge meltdowns about it.

I wish I could stick my hand up and be proud to say we dont have any nestle...its not that we dont care its just trying to work it all out...we give to charities and hold fundraisng for countries in need but the whole nestle thing really stabs at my heart and I know its impossible to help everyone but we do use a bit of nestle products at the shop ( please dont boycott us if you know us) our demographic wont pay to have organic fair trade products....but my house is nestle free i believe...sorry rambling but I feel so hypocrytical and didnt change my fb profile as i knew deep down we use the products :(
Can you still have strong dislike for a company but still occasionally buy their products?

ETA I remember seeing a doco on the orangutangs and it was awful they try to ave the ones that are near death...broke my heart :(

Personally we buy very little processed foods, and generally not big brands as I choose organics, local suppliers, fair trade etc. We're also vegetarian so we don't buy into the animal slaughtering industry and we choose ethically produced animal products such as biodynamic dairy and free range eggs. So am well aware of concsious food shopping for ethical and environmental concerns.
I think being a concious shopper is very important but I also think as previously pointed out, that we all have our limits so I wouldn't harp on and on at someone to stop eating milo if that's their 'thing'. Perhaps looking at what you see as important and making choices elsewhere in your shopping can be the big difference. Life is not black and white and allowing the shades of grey helps people recognise what they ARE doing, rather than pointing out what they are NOT doing and making them feel defeated.
Maz, don't get too hung up on that. Technically every single fruit, vegetable and grain item has been Genetically modified to an extent trough selective plant breeding to produce the sweetest, juiciest, biggest etc. For example the wheat your bread is made out of may have come from a plant that has been bred to reduce the incidence of fungal diseases or bred to be able to grow on less water etc. Or particular varieties of grain are better suited for different applications, like Durum wheat is best for pasta etc. The biggest issues are with GM Soya beans. But soya is just plain evil to start with LOL. The soy in Milo is the Emulsifier, which is Soy Lecithin and it is found in nearly every single processed food item. So even if you don't buy milo because of that, it is in ovaltine.:

Mazzie - all this info will probably blow your head off at first but take it as you go. Sometimes I feel like sitting on the floor crying because I can't do EVERYTHING...but there is still lots you can do, and there is only benefits for all. Globally and locally.
The only 'good' soy, is fermented soy, such as in tofu, but everything else is truly evil.

GM and food dripping with pesticides etc I get, but to start hammering into one of natures beautiful protein rich, healthy beans makes no sense to me.
babe you are a small, family run business and you have to do what you can to survive. Nobody judges you and i'm sure if you had a massive string of bakeries you would be able to do a bit more. I know how much you do for others and it's amazing :):
It's hard but every little bit counts, i'm going to try and not buy Nestle (only if I don't realise it's owned by them) but I am going to finish up whats in the house first. It's already bought and I can't afford to chuck everything out and start fresh.
As long as you do what is right by you then you can't go far wrong xxx
Meow, soy is absolutely fine if it is fermented, it is when you eat it in an unfermented form, that is when it becomes bad for you.

On the Nestle thing.... I too am boycotting all their products (well the ones i am aware of anyway!!) from now on...... and have been aware of this for about 2 yrs now.... its very sad.
I can't drink goats milk. It smells like goat LOL. We used to get buckets of it from our neighbour when we were kids and it was all we drank for months and months so I'm a bit over it.

The Body Shop give the impression that their products are made from mostly natural ingredients. In fact like all big cosmetic companies they make wide use of non-renewable petrochemicals, synthetic colours, fragrances and preservatives, and in many of their products they use only tiny amounts of botanical-based ingredients.:
They also hide ingredient labels on alot of their products so it makes it hard to read whats in the product which is wrong.
That's all I'm gonna say on that one.... :D

Maz, I read and read and read and read. The farming stuff I know because that's my life LOL. I read stuff from both sides, because there is often so much conflicting evidence but reading both sides will give you a broad enough view of it to form an opinion
I was pointed to the baby milk action website by a midwife friend, and read it thoroughly. I also read the Nestle site and their statement regarding the accusations. They try to defend themselves but I just don't buy it, the evidence against them is overwhelming.

they also changed their slogan from "not tested on animals" to "animal friendly" some time in the 90s i believe.
The Body shop, and MOST other companies are out to make money, it all comes down to sales. Yep, the body shop does do some community stuff but i can tell you the focus on that is minute compared to the focus on sales. Daily sales targets, constant training in pushing add ons, up-selling.... etc.
Maz, apart from working there i did ALOT of online research when i started to question their ethics at the time.
In essence i try to support local products where i can, organic products... and follow Failsafe where possible. But sometimes living with such limited options is way too time consuming when you have demanding fussy toddlers.
As i said do what you can, you're no less a person if you have nestle in your home than someone with a nestle free home. Maybe you donate to charities, maybe you save second hand water for the garden, maybe you just use light saver light bulbs... whatever.
We can't all be nestle free, i admire those who can, but also expect admiration for the ethical environmentally friendly things i do do, nestle aside.
Great. I just read the soy thread. DS was diagnosed as lactose intolerant but it was due to being on 3 consecutive courses of anti-biotics :shakehead: So then he was on lactose free milk. But then the MCHN said that that was no good for him and he'd be better off drinking soy milk. So he's been drinking soy milk, sometimes up to 700mls a day, for about the last 12 months! :o:
Maybe you could switch him to rice milk? I know Christy makes her own now because that is what her girls have. but like I said in that other thread, you can source calcium from sources other than milk, so you could at least try to cut down on it so he isn't having as much?
I so dont want him having it anymore :( . He calls it his "nice". He loves it. Im going to buy rice milk tomorrow and try to switch it. I've tried giving him normal milk but he wont have a bar of it. He's not lactose intolerant anymore. He just got used to having soy :( I wish i'd just used rice milk from the start.
