glad to have found this thread :) I am expressing full-time for Tee who is 6 weeks old today. She has a cleft lip and palate so breastfeeding is a no-go :( I am now pumping 5 times a day and hoping like mad this is enough to maintain my supply, am watching the figures carefully for any drop in production.

i started off every 3 hours round the clock but it was doing my head in, plus I was getting over a litre so decided to cut back a bit. Enjoying sleeping more at night now :)

Um... what else? I'm using the medela symphony (need to return it soon) and also my own medela freestyle. Not doing a lot of double pumping though as I am not organised enough. The washing of bottles and pump bits is doing my head in, keen to hear how others do this - particularly how you dry them, and store them.

Welcome to the EE thread. I'm sorry BF hasn't worked out for you. Is BF definitely a no-go with these issues?

5 times a day pumping a litre is great. I found I had to pump a whole lot more to keep up my supply. I"m no expert in how these things work but I think the work you put in now helps for later on.. Everyone talks about needing to do at leas 8 times a day for the first few months. I was doing 7-8 times a day and then my supply took a dive at about 9 weeks and had to go on Motilium. Now I am pumping around a litre but am vigilant to get in 8 pumps a day - not always evenly spaced though. Maybe everyone is different so I'm not really sure. It's easy to stress over figures of how much you get but I think you're probably right to keep an overview of how much you are getting if you are doing 5 times a day so you can take action if it drops.

I'm using the symphony still but want to get the freestyle. We just haven't had the upfront cash so we continue to shell out the monthly fee, but I know it is cheaper in the long run to get the freestyle - sigh.

Double pumping was one of my earliest achievements that made such a difference as it halved the time I was on the pump and gave me a bit more time to respond to my bub. Hands free was the other achievement so I can occupy myself and attend to my bub if required.

Yeah, the washing of bottles and bits initially did my head in. Now it is a bit automatic. I do take a shortcut when I'm trying to get out the door and when I"m doing it overnight. I pop the bottles, funnels and bits into a snap lock glad bag and then into the fridge. Apparently you can do this for up to 24 hours at a time. I just do it when I'm short on time or want to go back to bed. I'm not sure on the protocol for drying and storing, but what I do is wash in detergent then rinse in hot water and then just put wet into a bowl on the bench for my next use. I think you probably are supposed to dry but I haven't been.

Also check out the kellymom.com website and go down into the Exclusive Pumping section for some more tips. I learnt a heap from this site about storage and handling of milk and some other shortcuts. Also going back through the experiences and past conversation of expressers on this thread was very helpful and an inspiration for me to keep it up.

Good on you for giving EE a go, it's hard work at times but I think it is worth it just knowing that you are giving your baby as much of your goodness as you can for as long (or even as short) as you can.

LisaB - thanks for the welcome. Yep, breastfeeding is a no-go, she can't physically get the seal. She needs to have a special bottle too.

There is no way i could maintain 8 pumps a day. i did it for the first week or so? I will have to check my records. Then i dropped to six up until this week (so DD was 5.5 weeks old). I know that what you do in the early days sets up your supply, so I am nervous doing less than recommended. But I need to save my sanity. How often did you pump for each session? I do 20 minutes a session, which is still nearly 2 hours a day. I felt like my poor DS was totally neglected.


How long have you been expressing? since I was about 35 weeks pregnant - I wanted to have colostrum ready to go as we were anticipating feeding problems due to the cleft and wanted to avoid formula. Tee has never been able to have a feed direct from the breast. She's 6 weeks old now.

How long do you plan to do it for/ or have done it for? everyone says to have small goals, but honestly, my goal is 12 months plus. Tee will have surgery at 6 months and again at 12, so I want her to be getting the good stuff at that point.

How many times a day do you express? 5. Recently dropped from 6 to save my sanity, and on the advice of my MCHN who is also a LC. I hope like hell my supply doesn't drop off too much. I am also hoping that once I am feeling better/stronger emotionally/am in more of a routine, I'll be able to add in extra quick pumps throughout the day. Currently doing 10 min per side or 10 or 15 min double pumping.

Do you enjoy it? enjoy? no. at best it is tolerable. right now i am handsfree so i can type on here, that enables me to almost forget what i am doing...almost. i have nearly thrown the pump already! i miss the ease of breastfeeding, of knowing if i was with bub i had everything i needed, no need for bottles and pumps.


Do you have other kids? yep. DS is 3.5yo. he was breastfed until nearly 3.

If you feel comfortable sharing- Why you are expressing? Tee has a cleft lip and palate. Breastfeeding is physically impossible.

What type of expressing method do you use? Hand expressed ante-natally and for the first three days. Then a hired medela symphony, and now medela freestyle. it has a nifty handsfree thing but it is still awkward.... i think it would work better with smaller boobs? not keen on double pumping - too cow like... trying to get over that as it obvsiouly would save time. but then, when i am double pumping i can't really do anything else so it's a tradeoff.


How much milk in a day? around 1L. has been over 1.2L. Blessed with a good supply which does remove some stress. I am lucky to have at least a few litres in the fridge already which will hopefully give me enough time to build up supply if it does start to drop or if her needs ever outgrow my supply (doubt it at this point).

Best expressing tip? handsfree and do something else - watch tv, surf the net etc.

Questions: what have you done while pumping? I have fed DD in the sling and pumped. Not a lot of fun tho... I tried yesterday to attach the handsfree while she was in the sling, couldn't do it :(

With handsfree - are you all able to pick up your baby? I just can't seem to manage it, the bottle sticks out too far?

I pump for a total of 20 mins a side through double pumping, so a total of 20 mins. Yes, I do feel rather like a cow sometimes. Doesn't help that I grew up on a dairy farm and my mum referring to the pump as the 'milking machine'. I try and block the whole experience out like you by doing emails/computer time, watching tv or reading a book...anything but clock watching.

In terms of feeling like neglecting your bub, yes I understand that feeling. Although I only have one and I'm not trying to occupy another child...that would be much harder. For me it has come down to how do I occupy my bub so he isn't neglected and he isn't upset from not having enough mum time. When my son was about 6 weeks old I would feed him whilst I was pumping by putting a cushion on the end of my knees and putting his head on the cushion and his legs dropping over to the couch so he was on an angle. Sometimes I would lay him on his back beside me on the couch and stimulate him with some toys or touch. Now the only way I can do things is when he is asleep, he cat naps for about 30 mins after a feed so I jump on the pump then, so he doesn't even notice I"m gone. This means that I'm often pumping every 2 hours in the morning and then I stretch it out a bit in the afternoon, sometimes up to 4 hours as I wait for my partner to come home and then I pump then. I therefore pump fairly erratically but get in about 8 pumps a day.

Are there some special activities you can set up for you other child, or quieter interactive things whilst pumping?

Yes if I really need to I can pick up my son but can't hold him against me. I can therefore move him, get him out of the cot, put him beside me etc. I just hold him out at arms length. He has neck control though, I can't remember if they have it at 6 weeks. On the rare occasion he wakes whilst I"m pumping I just unhook myself and go and resettle him or if he won't resettle grab him from the cot and hook up again to finish.

In terms of handsfree - the women on here have used a few different methods to achieve it so if the freestyle gadget doesn't work for you there maybe some other options. I just do my mat. bra up around the bottles and they usually stay put. I'm a small busted gal (with BM I'm a C cup for the first time in my life...hehehe...an incentive to keep on pumping!!) so I don't know if that makes this method easier for me.

If you can have the vision of 12 months that's great. I"m a small goal girl. My next goals is to get to 6 months which is only about 5 weeks away. I can't believe that I"m almost there. I had a lot of emotions to work through to accept that I was an EE and BF wasn't going to work out. Initially I had a lot of resentment about having to use the pump and saw it as a stop gap until I got BF going. Then finally at 9 weeks due to issues with my son I accepted that BF wasn't going to happen and I had to go to the next best thing. I had the milk so it made sense to use it.

You are both doing such amazing jobs for your babies, Lisa and Teesmum. it's easy to feel like you are tied to the pump, and most of us have *helpful* friends and relatives who encourage you to see it that way. I wonder, Teesmum if they would say that if your baby had another disapility that required a couple of hours therapy each day? it's been shown that breastfed babies are less likely to get sick than bottle fed babies. Now a sick baby is REALLY time-consuming. The good thing about babies and children is they just want to *be* with you. they don't demand so called "quality time" - they just want you around. Rather than neglecting your son and daughter you are giving them a fabulous gift. It's a good thing for him to play with his sister, and to learn that sometimes you just have to wait. best start them young I say! In terms of expressing try to throw in another pumping session when you can, even if it's just short. It's so much easier to keep your supply up than to build it up when it goes down. At this age you have all those fabulous hormones working for you. If your breasts feel uncomfortably full, head straight to the pump! A dose of mastitis would be very bad for you right now, and this is something to look out for when you have got such a fabulously abundant supply.

I am lucky that I have a good network of people who are very supportive of my pumping, and keep reminding me of the good that I am doing. I am very pro-breastfeeding and stubborn which is why I am committed to this pumping journey.

Barb - was it you that said much earlier in this thread that you adopted a baby and that you established breastfeeding when bub was over 12 months old?? I always here that this is possible, but don't know of anyone who has ever done it, it was sounding a bit like an urban myth. Given my bub will have her palate repaired at 12 months, I am very interested in this! I don't want to get my hopes up... but it would be lovely to establish breastfeeding post-surgery. I Breastfed my son until he was 34 months old so very much worth it in my eyes.

Things are settling down here as Tee is sleeping better so I have more time to pump, and also more time with DS. He is very good at occupying himself, but was beginning to show signs of being ignored/dealing with new sibling etc. But this week as I've had more time, he's back to his normal happy little self :)

All babies will go to the breast given time and patience - I haven't yet met one who didn't. I think - 'he was too old and didn't remember how to suck" is an urban myth. guan began breastfeeding when she was nearly 2 and fed til she was 6. I think you have EVERY chance of feeding at the breast when her clefts are repaired - but yes, you need patience!

I have just hit the 5 month mark...yay!! The last month has been a hard one mentally. I had 2 incidents of burst veins which were a bit scary and made me panic a little when jumping on the pump. I hope that is all in the past now! I am going back to work 3 days at the end of the month and am looking to trade the symphony in for a freestyle so it looks like I'll be pumping for awhile longer. I"m a bit nervous about fitting the pumps in at work between meetings etc, particularly when I'm off site.

My DS has been diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and regular formula isn't suitable so I kind of see the need to keep expressing for awhile longer. My goal of 6 months is in reach now but it seems I'm already setting my sights a bit further. I haven't decided what my next goal will be as yet.

My son is now having 2 solid meals as day but I haven't noticed his milk appetite decreasing yet so I"m not sure when that happens. I'm currently pumping 8 times a day and getting about a litre. My son takes about 800mls including milk in his food. I'm going to cut back to 7 pumps a day in a week or so to make it fit better for work and my freezer is getting full again and we have no room for food...hehehehe. I hope my supply doesn't drop too much but a tiny bit wouldn't hurt. I'm still doing one overnight. I have been too worried about dropping that as it usually yields the biggest volume, I'm prone to blocked ducts at the best of times and I'm worried if the stretch of 7 hours might affect my supply.

Lisa congrats on hitting the 5 mth mark! Those milestones mean so much, I remember the feeling of achievement every time I ticked one off :)
I dropped my overnight pumps at 6mths & I worried too about blocked ducts, I moved my last pump at night a bit later & my first in the morning a bit earlier so it wasn't like I just cutting one out all of a sudden but extending the times ITMS, a bit gentler on the boobs I think. 7 hours overnight should be ok at this stage I think? your supply sounds great :)

Teesmum, I found the first few months the hardest, that was when I was doing the most pumps - I know what you mean about feeling tied to the pump! How are things going now?

You're doing so well. My DS also had that allergy, and I didn't want to use prescription formula unless I really had to. I'm assuming no dairy for you as well? When I was finishing up expressing, I couldn't decide if I was more excited to be able to eat anything, or to not have to be attached to my pump!

Once solids were well established, I actually started DS on 1 bottle of rice milk per day (after dr's approval). This took a bit of pressure off me in terms of supply. I then stopped expressing just after 11 months and went to rice milk (again after dr's approval).

A little bit, not a lot. My first pump of the day was always the biggest and it increased once I cut the overnight pump. I'm not sure what time your last one at night is, but you could try making your first morning one 5am? If your supply does drop too much, extending your day time pumps just a bit might help, too.
Also, I would try dropping it gradually - don't just stop all of a sudden - skip one night, then wait a few, then skip another and gradually increase the amount of nights you skip.

fleur - mmm...interesting. If the volume doesn't drop much I may need a bigger bottle for that express. Yes I think I would need to drop it gradually due to regularly getting blocked ducts for no apparent reason (like weekly) but definitely happens if I'm late in expressing.

Surprised - yes I'm dairy free at the moment. When I eventually finish up I will have a big binge on cheese, chocolate and ice cream...all my favs. I hadn't thought of rice milk. Is that fortified with calcium? Did your son take to the taste? I heard it is a bit bland.

Rice milk is actually quite sweet. You are doing so well, I went dairy free for 8 weeks when I was BFing my DS2 - he got over his intolerance very quickly thank goodness, I thought that was hard work! Huge congrats to you getting through this long :hug:

oooh, my Freestyle just arrived. The set up is different with each medela pump I've tried. This one sits flatter to my stomach than the swing and symphony. The membrane/valve is different too, only need to use the big bottle brush to clean it and the valve doesn't hang into the bottle like the symphony one does. I've tried the hands free and it holds much firmer than my current hands free method. Now I just have to work out how to pay for it!

I've cut back to 7 pumps and getting around the same amount as I did with 8 but it might drop as I feel full at the time I used to do the 8th pump so I guess this feeling will go soon and so might the milk. DS is now having 2 meals a day and in 3 weeks will start having 3 meals so dropping isn't so bad. Gosh it is hard to see when the volume goes down. I have to do a lot of self talk and remind myself I really don't need to be creating 1L when my son only needs just under 800mls including what I thin out his meals with. Like I think everyone here I feel the pressure to keep up my supply even when I don't need to keep it up as much.

Ooh exciting! I loved my Freestyle. Just be careful - the milk can actually spill quite easily because of the design - and we know that stuff is liquid gold!

DS loves rice milk. In fact, at one point he was having 1 rice milk and the rest EBM, and never seemed to notice a difference. Most rice milk I've come across is fortified with calcium - sometimes other things too. There is even one that is protein enriched (with chickpeas).

I haven't been on lately as we've been moving house. We're still in the land of unpacked boxes. DS has now turned 1 and I'm down to a nightly pump. I'm clinging to that and don't entirely know if I want to give it up yet. There are a couple of reasons for this. 1. DS has some development delays due to low muscle tone, so I find myself saying "I'll stop when he's stronger and able to sit unaided". 2. I'm not sure what to change him to. We have some frozen EBM but I'm not sure if I go to formula or cows milk. He still has trouble with wind so I'm really not certain aboutcows milk. Any ideas or suggestions please?

Sorry for the lack of personal responses -I'm on my phone so it's s little hard to review things. I should have Internet and computer set up next week.

Lisa, woot for the Freestyle! And such good news that your supply is still pretty good. I totally understand that feeling of needing to maintain supply, even when it's already pretty good. I wasn't even using half of what I was expressing each day but I was so reluctant to let it drop. I think in the long run it does mean that you can reduce some pumps and still maintain a good supply, so there is an upside to it.

CeCe, congrats on making it to one year! and happy birthday to your little man. I think if you feel like you want to keep going, then do. If you feel like he needs it still, then why not continue; there's no real reason to stop other than what works for you. I had to remind myself if I was BFing then there was every chance I would be feeding past 12 months, so no real reason to stop EE then, you know? On the other hand if you feel like this is a good point to stop, it's a great milestone to have reached.
As for cows milk / formula, most formulas are cows milk based anyway, and both are harder to digest than breast milk, so there will be an adjustment phase either way. If it were me I would try him on cows milk, and if it doesn't seem to agree with him maybe then try a LF formula.

Congratulations Cece :bluecheer: One year is a great milestone. I hope you are really proud of what you have achieved. Even though I'm not there yet I think Fleur offers some very sensible advice: keep going if you want to. If you scroll a little further back you will see that my DS has a cows milk protein allergy and Surprised has suggested rice milk as an alternative for him, which could be viable for your DS if you want a milk alternative.

I hope your unpacking goes quickly, I don't envy you.

Fleur - it's weird how we get so attached to producing so much more than we actually need, it's like we think that our supply is constantly under threat, well that's how I know I operate.

Surprised - thanks for the info about rice milk. I will talk to the paediatrician about it as I'm going to see her next week. Rice milk seems like it might be the way to go when I need a substitute and maybe I can introduce it to think out his rice cereal if my supply ends up dropping to the point I don't want to use EBM in his food.

Okay, am I being overly anxious without reason or could there be an issue on the horizon?

I dropped my pumps from 8 to 7 about 10 days ago. DS is now having 2 solid meals a day so I didn't need the same amount of milk. Prior to dropping my pumps I was getting about 1L a day and I have been on motilium for the last few months. My supply has dropped 100 - 150mls now that my breasts have settled down. This is enough to cover DS feeds and a bit extra ie: maybe 150-200mls extra. I have been anxious about the drop and watching the figures I'm recording about my supply and really worried that it will just continue to drop. I guess I'm not sure if my supply is stable or could drop further.

Has anyone else had a similar drop with decreasing pumps, and does it stabilise or just continue to go down? I can't really continue to pump 8 times a day as 1L is a bit overkill when DS takes about 750mls or so including milk to thin out his solids. What do you think?

In my experience it should stabilise over the next few days...each time you drop an express the supply will drop over a few days and then stabilise at the new level....at least thats what happened for me.

I agree, it should stabilise. If it doesn't one other option might be to increase the length of your pumps, rather than the frequency. I used to pump for quite a long time but found that that worked better for me, rather than pumping more often.

Okay so I'm probably just being over anxious, afterall how could my supply just slip away entirely if I'm pumping 7 times a day.

Fleur I will probably make some longer pumps if I need too rather than go back to 8. Going back to 8 doesn't make sense, particularly as by 6 months (2weeks away) my son will be having 3 solid meals a day.

In my experience, as Fleur and Mel have said, when I dropped a pump my supply would level out of a few days and then reach it's new level and remain steady. It can be a very worrying time though. It becomes so ingrained to watch those levels and not let them drop too much.

As for me, I've finally done it. My last pump was on Friday night. I only got 60mls and decided fighting fate (be it decreased supply or unfortunately lack of support from DH to allow me time to pump - he didn't see the need to go past 12 months) was not good for any of us. So, After 54 weeks my pumping days have ended. I'm sad but happy. I think it will take a little while to really appreciate what I've done and the huge commitment it was. I have about a weeks supply of frozen EBM that I'm working through and transitioning DS onto cows milk. I think it's going okay, but DS is miserable atm due to teething so it's a little hard to say for sure. I must say I'm looking forward to when I can just throw the bottle in the microwave to heat up rather than waiting for the bottle warmer. It's a small thing :)

CeCe- Well done, so inspirational. I'm secretly hoping to make it to Xmas and then that might be enough. DS will be 9 months then. Xmas might be enough because my family does super desserts and I won't be able to eat them if I"m still pumping because I can't have dairy products due to DS milk protein allergy. People are already beginning to question why I'm still going as I'm almost at the 6 month mark and returning to work.

Lisa, others' expectations on what you should do and when can be a pain in the neck! I copped a bit of it from my workplace, when are you going to stop... I just said when I'm ready... it passes so quickly, you do what you need to in your time. They'll get over it ;) :hug:

Fleur - In Victoria it is a legally protected right to express in the workplace, but I have heard that my workplace thinks they are bending over backwards for me by 'allowing' me to express. I have already explained that I can do it in the same amount of time that others take cigarette breaks and I can actually work (I do desk work) whilst expressing which is my preference rather than just sitting there. I think the female boss perhaps hasn't had successful experience with expressing because she has told other people at work that she doesn't understand how it will work.

Argh, that's so frustrating. It doesn't matter that YOU know it's your legal right, and that you are no less productive for it, the fact that they think that must be so frustrating - and it can be so hard to change stubborn, closed minds.
If you need backup I am sure there are somelinks somewhere with solid info - if you want to take the option of leaving it lying around strategically ;)

Hi everyone, just wanted to introduce myself. I just joined BellyBelly and have read most of this forum already! My beautiful DS is 3 months old and I have not had much luck with breast feeding. He has had severe reflux, was described as an "angry little man" by my lovely midwife an hour after birth when I first tried to feed him and he refused to attach, I've had severe nipple infections, trouble getting my milk to come in, low supply and now breast refusal resulting from nipple confusion and associating feeding with pain. I've been mostly expressing since he arrived and have just about given in to the fact that he will be a bottle fed baby (after many many many tears and much heartbreak).

I am aiming for 4 months of EBM, I know many of you have gone on much longer so I will see how we go from there!!

Just realized I should answer those original questions, here goes:

How long have you been expressing? 3 months

How long do you plan to do it for/ or have done it for? Minimum 4 months exclusive breast milk, then maybe some formula, I'll see how I go!

How many times a day do you express? Seven. Try to express at 7am 10am 1pm 4pm 7pm 10:30pm and 2:30am (that's when DS wakes overnight at the moment) don't think I could express overnight if he slept through!

Do you enjoy it? In a word, no. Every time I express I wish I could be breast feeding, makes me a little sad, and it's tricky trying to juggle life, baby and expressing.

Do you have other kids? No...not sure I could do it with a second child (ditto!!)

If you feel comfortable sharing- Why you are expressing? As I mentioned in my last post... Multiple breastfeeding issues!

What type of expressing method do you use? Medela Freestyle double pump, love it.

How much milk in a day? ~900ml

Best expressing tip? Keeping expressing gear in the fridge so it doesn't have to be washed every time I use it!

In those first few months my goals were really very short. It started day to day, then week to week etc. It was probably around 4 months that I felt I could go to 6 months and then I think my stubbornness set in, so I went to 12.

I totally get the wishing at each express session you were directly feeding. I had that up until I stopped, and even after. I'm glad you've found BB and this thread because it is a great support.

Welcome to our little thread. My first goal was definitely 3 months. At that point I was only setting a goal a month ahead. Sometimes only a week ahead. 900mls at 3 months is great. My supply took a dive around 9 weeks when I finally stopped trying to attach my son and had some stress about his feeding issues. I went on Motilium which meant I could keep my sanity be expressing 8 times a day to cover the basic feeds and a bit to store. I'm 6.5 months in and still doing the 2.30am express and this week slowly trying to wind this one back. I've been wanting to do it for ages but because of the supply issues I had have been scared to take that jump. My DS is now on 3 solid meals a day and his need for milk has cut back so I'm biting the bullet now.

I don't particularly enjoy expressing either and it makes me a bit sad too about not being able to BF. Nearly every time I get on the pump it's after some procrastination. At the end of the day I am glad that I am giving my son BM and that's what keeps me going. I try and use the time to get on the computer or do some paperwork and that makes the time go quicker and keeps my mind occupied.

As my son has gotten more mobile I think the expressing has gotten easier. I now do it when he is having his day sleeps or often he is happy enough to play with a toy on the floor. I definitely prefer to do it when he is sleeping so I don't run the risk of having to bend down and spill the milk when supervising him.

My new goal is 9 months and I think I will call it a day then, particularly as my son has a milk protein allergy which means I'm off all dairy which has been a huge lifestyle change for me.

Wow, it's great to have so many replies already, thank you! CeCe I know what you mean about stubbornness! The mums at my mothers group are unable to comprehend why I don't just "give myself a break" and put him on formula. All my life I "knew" I would breast feed if I was ever lucky enough to have a baby, but now that hasn't worked out I can't just "put him on formula" it's just not something I could do right now, there are too many health benefits of breast milk and I don't feel I can deny my beautiful boy those benefits just because it would be more convenient for me to give him formula. (although realistically I know he will likely get at least some formula in another month or two). But you getting to 12 months is amazing!!

Lisa B 9 months is awesome.... Respect!! I'm on motillium too, I forgot to mention that! Have been since day 5 when I was still only getting 1ml or less colostrum. I had to comp feed for about 10 days until my supply came in as DS lost 14% of his birth weight and was jaundiced. He has been fully EBM fed since then. I started taking 20mg three times a day and have very slowly weaned down to 10mg three times a day.

It's good to know it's still possible to express once bubs gets mobile! I'd been a bit worried about that! At the moment I express when he is asleep or quiet and happy in his swing facing me!

As you have both said, I'm setting small goals and will see how far I get!

I'm trailing a dairy free diet now to see if it improves his reflux, 2 weeks so far and no significant change yet, will see how we go!

I got to just over 11 months... I had aimed to bf for 1 year, but my lovely GP gave me the ok to put him on to rice milk just before his 1st birthday, so I jumped at the chance to stop... for me, not having any formula was as good as bfing to 1 year, if that makes sense!

I haven't heard about not having dairy helping reflux? I'll have to keep that 1 in mind for this (in utero) baby. Although since no 1 had a milk allergy, there's a good chance this one will too.

Sounds like your supply is pretty decent now. It's so hard when you know exactly what you're getting. I kind of think ignorance is bliss sometimes!

On the topic of "dairy free' a good friend of mine who is an old hand at dairy free having breastfed her dairy allergic children said to me the other day that she got a lot of pressure to put her children on dairy free formula and "give herself a break" - it must be wearing her down." (She found the comments wore her down, not the actual situation) but when the baby is on food they still need to be dairy free. As a mother, you still need to modify your diet. You can't eat dairy in fron of your children, and it's easiest to just not have it in the house. Many children grow out of their allergies and intolerances earlier rather than later, thank goodness, but if your baby toddler or child is allergic to a food you just can't have it, can't have it in the house, and no-one much sympathises with the other's workload." Many mums I have worked with have found being dairy free tough, but when they get the hang of it find that they are healthier than ever before. It was an interesting conversation and an interesting take.

With regards to dairy and reflux, from what I understand (im no expert though) cows milk protein intolerance can be a cause of reflux. However there are many causes and this is just one of them. If this is NOT the cause, eating dairy won't make any difference. I thought I may as well give a dairy free diet a go, can't hurt!!

I agree with you Barb, it's not that difficult, and yes, you would have to keep the offending foods out of thenhouse anyway!

I'm sure people only have our best interests at heart when they tell us to "give ourselves a break", but yes, having to constantly explain why I feel the need to express rather than formula feed can get tiring!

It did my head in for a bit. In the end, I didn't explain to people. When they asked why, I said "because I want to". When they asked "how long are you going to do THAT for" I just smiled and said "until I'm ready to stop".
It's about you, your baby, your partner. Everyone else can have their opinions, but it doesn't matter; you are doing what you need to, and you're doing a great job ;)

I thought I would just share my journey about on cows milk protein allergy and reflux.

We initially got the diagnosis of reflux but the second paediatrician we saw raised the possibility of allergy causing DS symptoms so we went off egg, milk and wheat (I was already off that because of being coeliac). We were told it would probably take about 2-3 weeks to see an improvement if there was to be any and we continued with reflux medication. She described an allergy to one of these products as like having eczema int he stomach. After that time we saw an improvement in the DS being less fussy at the bottle and taking greater volumes of milk. We then reintroduced milk gradually into my diet and it go to the point that he was fussy again. I tried to work out how much milk he could tolerate but it got really hard in terms of me putting up with his symptoms which could last for weeks, so I just decided it was best to eliminate it completely rather than work out the dose he could tolerate. When I reintroduced egg I had no change in his behaviour so now I eat eggs freely. After these trials we trialled coming off the reflux medication which we have done now and we saw no change in my DS behaviour. So, after all of this we are diagnosed with a milk protein allergy and not reflux.

Anyhow, I will always wonder if DS having a milk protein allergy was related in someway to his breast refusal in the first 9 weeks. I was always told it was nipple confusion issue as due to vasospasm I introduced the bottle from birth until I could get the attachment right. Eventually the same refusal symptoms which included not finishing a feed and crying at every attempt at attachment were displayed on the bottle. I will never really understand the cause of the breast refusal and it probably was multi factored. I just wonder if I had have known about milk protein allergy and worked on it whilst I was trying to BF if we may be in a different situation now. I wish the LCs that I saw could have picked up on the potential reflux and allergy issues. I just ended up feeling like a failure with no explainable reason as to why my DS wouldn't feed from the breast. The first paediatrician I saw made me feel like a failure as I was combining breast and bottle and told me I had created nipple confusion and I had to choose a feeding method. The thing was I had chosen and it was breast but my DS wouldn't feed so I had to resort to the bottle, particularly as his weight was becoming an issue.

Anyways, that's all supposed to be in the past...right!?!? Gosh the emotions around BF and inability to BF are always close to the surface even 7 months in.

The role and causes of allergies are not very well understood. And they are on the rise. I would say for sure that your early problems were contributed in part by your baby's allergies.Like many mothers you found the same thing when your baby was on the bottle. Mothers are put under such pressure to put their baby on the bottle - really it solves nothing, as the underlying cause has not been addressed (the same to a large extent with meds - they address a symptom, but not the underlying cause)
Often family history will give you a big clue. When I see a mum with a super fussy baby I always take a detailed history and some of the questions I ask are "Do you or the baby's father have any allergies or intolerances" Often the first answer I get is "no" but then I did a bit.....anyone in your family have eczema, asthma, hayfever, hives, doesn't like milk or certain foods? had these things as a child? Invariably I get some answers.
There are 2 types of reflux. Reflux is just the food (milk) coming out of the stomach back up into the food pipe. We all have it. Worse in babies because the valve in the top of the stomach is just weak and prone to coming open, and because they have low muscle tone (because they are babies) and spend a lot of their time lying down.
The second type of reflux is where a baby suffers fussy, irritable symptoms. It's not really reflux at all, but a response to an allergy or intolerance. (as Lisa described as 'eczema on the inside". Often it's treated with relux meds with little success. Sometimes they do succeed in masking the symptoms. It is very important in both cases that mothers are supported to continue breastfeeding. It is much worse if the baby is formula fed and we see frequently through these pages stories of mothers being encouraged to put their baby on formula only to be on a treadmill of trying different formulas, juggling sleepless nights and reflux meds, and then constant illness as formula fed babes are more likely to get sick than breastfed babies. - not pretty.
Lisa, you need to reframe the situation. These babies are not like everyone else's baby. These babies are high needs. It's a really tough road for a new mother. And those mothers do the best job of keeping themselves and their babies together. There should be a medal - not this constant sniffing about "why you would put yourself through it" Really you've got no choice. And, you got little useful support from health professionals by the look of it. That's dreadful. But you've stuck in all the way. As an aside, in babies with allergies, even if you can't fully breastfeed (I know it's a hard road!) partially breastfeeding will mean your baby will get less infections than a fully formula fed baby. Breastmilk also contains anti-inflamatory properties which help dampen down the allergy.
