I agree Kitt3n... ABC and SBS stations are all you really need for good quality TV... just my opinion too though. With all the new TV stations about to become available I think that it will mean that I will limit myself even more... that's what I do when I have too much choice: make self imposed limitations... have a bad case of "choice fatigue" here.
Also when I was a child my parents swayed us strongly in the ABC's direction... and I think I have been strongly influenced by that as an adult.... I would like to think that my kids grow up to appreciate the ABC's quality compared to the majority of the commercial stations programming (what there is of it squeezed in between the ads). Once again, just my opinion I realise there are lots of people who simply prefer commercial TV ;) of course that's their choice.

I lived without TV for a while and didn't miss it.
It's very rare that I REALLY want to watch something on TV. I have to watch the news (5 mins to go) and unfortunately the TV often gets left on after that out of habit more than anything else. DP is very good at switching it off though - he hates the TV being left on for background noise when no-one is watching it. Really, I think he just hates not being the centre of attention LOL which is fair enough.
My trashy TV fix is Medium but I honestly can't think of any other show that I know the timeslot for. Though I do like The Cook And The Chef too. And used to love Sensing Murder.

We just got t.v back after about 8 months without it, no reception at a rental and we didn't want to pay to put up an arial.
It didn't bother us, we still had it set up and I played Little Einstein's dvds for DS sometimes (and now that he is older Sesame Street/Elmo). DH and I usually watch a downloaded series at night. So we do use the television a bit but not for watching commercial t.v.
The other day it happened to be on and DS looked interested in Funniest Home Videos, then a segment came on with little kids pushing and smacking each other (whilst the audience laughed) and DS said 'push' so I turned it off, I don't want telly teaching him it is ok/funny to do things like that!

Ugh, I know what you mean about Australia's Funniest Home Videos Artechim :( Laughing at people who are getting hurt is strange IMO.... and it's not the kind of thing I'd want my kids to learn either. Admittedly I do catch bits of it and I don't mind the videos that involve animals... cats springing out from unlikely places is always a hoot... but as soon as the ones come on that involve accidents I tell my littlies "Hmmm, we don't laugh at people who hurt themselves do we?" and switch off.
I forgot to mention that when my DH and I first moved in together we didn't have a TV for several months... and eventually a family member gave us a tiny black and white TV... this was in 1994... we were probably one of the last people in Melbourne to use a B&W TV LOL and that did us for the rest of the year I think.... until someone gave us an old second-hand colour TV... oh the luxury! LOL
Actually it never really phased me.... at the time I was working on a large cross-stitch birth sampler and only kinda listened to the TV anyhow. Oh and we only got a DVD player about 2 years ago. We just aren't that "into" TV I guess. Bit ofr a turnaround for both DH and I who came from families who always had the latest TV related items. Both DH and I were one of the first families in the street (when we were kids) to have a colour TV. Showing my age now but I can remember watching black and white TV.... I remember how amazing it was to see my shows in colour for the first time! Gilligan's Island... Johnny Young's Talent Team... Mr Squiggle.... Doctor Who. Also: my family got a video recorder in about 1982 before I had even heard of them.... but I don't recall watching that many videos... my sis and I would rather have played outside I think... and as soon as I came in when it was dark I just wanted to be left alone in my room to read and draw.
