I call my MIL mum2 in messages, emails etc, bit when I chat face to face I use her first name.
As DH's dad passed away a number of years ago, he now has a step dad, we always use his first name.

I don't call my MIL anything. Like, there was a time I would have called her mum, but the time has passed.
My DH calls my mum mum, and she lives with us..so their relationship is good..
Sometimes I feel bad about not calling his mum ma, until she does or says something (else) stupid.
Nothing. Nothing from the day I met her. She never introduced herself, just made it known she knew who I was (she came into my work). When we broached the subject of what I should call her year's later, she told me I was to call her "DH's Mother" (obviously DH's real name). As both DH and I found that utterly ridiculous, I continued to call her nothing. Now there is no issue anymore, because we don't see her.

By their first names and DH does the same with my parents. I think even if we were super close it would be weird calling MIL 'mum' as she's just not my mum, but each to their own.
On a side note, I was getting really irritated when she constantly signed off as 'mum and dad' in my birthday cards, etc, so I made sure I addresed them as both mum & dad (from DH) AND by their first names (from me) in any cards I sent them. She soon got the hint.
