My 12 month old has Millet, oats, barley or rice. All made from the wholegrain. She has stewed apples or banana or blueberries in whatever grain she is having. And a drop of cows milk too.
My older children have brown rice, steamed veggies with tahini and tamari sauce. And miso soup in the mornings. Thinking that bubba will go this way too soon.
My DS loves the Sultana bran buds too
We are also big scrambled egg fans here, I try to not mix them too much so they are nice big chunks for him to pick up, he loved them from about 10 months
Hot X buns are a hit and always have been
But our staple breakfast is weetbix with warm milk followed by toast and vegemite - this has been our most popular breakfast for well over 12 months
Oh and yep, porridge!!
Haha - exactly what I was just thinking Emma!!!
Thanks for all the responses - some great ideas there. Eg - eggs, I'd always kept them for a dinner thing unless we are doing the big B&E brekkie on the weekends but there's no reason I couldn't do it for just me and the kids during the week.
HotI - I'd give him a whole piece of toast, cut up into little pieces, bit by bit. But as I said, half the time he just gnaws on it and spits it out again and it ends up on the floor. But he'd probably eat half a piece I think? He hates yoghurt and my attempt at weeties this morning was a dismal failure so I can't comment on how much of those he'd have. When he used to like baby cereal (the smooth stuff from a packet, farex/rafferty's) he'd eat maybe a good five or six tablespoons, sometimes I'd make up a second batch, which is why I find it odd that he's so not interested now.
Stupid question for you all - is porridge hard to make? I think I figured out why I haven't offered it to my kidlets - I hate it. Don't know why. So I have never made it for brekkie. But will try it for the kids.
Is cereal like nutri-grain ok for him to eat? Nutrition-wise? I know food is fun til one and he's getting all his goodies from my BM but what about the not-goodies, sugar etc? Or is it ok because he probably won't eat much?
I'm also starting to think part of it is wanting to experience the food himself, including touching/feeling the texutres and shoving it into his mouth himself, which may be why toast is the winner. Maybe I should try muffins, I've got muffins in the freezer. With a bit of vegemite? Should be ok?
I've given him eggy bread before too, that was a winner - again he could "feed" himself. Maybe that's what I should be focussing on...
Although I got scared off eggy bread, eggs in general, by the MCHN - apparently I should not have introduced egg so young!!! Naughty mummy. Bah, he's not allergic! I'd know by now!!
I'm not a fan of most cereals because they do have a whole lot of sugar and salt for little bodies to process, that said, I have had a fussy eater and have given most things a crack.
Porridge is easy peasy. 2minute oats covered with water and boiled until they look like porridge - lol about 2minutes :D I add a bit of milk and sultanas for DD but DS has plain.
I also use arborio rice to make rice porridge sometimes. But I use milk for that.
How about pureed fruit with his weetbix?
No added suager pikelets? You can add pureed fruit to the mix and it's yummy.
Boiled egg cut up with toast pieces?
Cheese on toast?
Kate, my 2yo eats a similar amount even now - he drives me crackers!
Kim that's what I was thinking about the cereals. Hmm.
Ok, 2 min porridge better go on the shopping list! Will give it a go!
I could puree some fruit and try that, that'd be an idea. Just with the weetbix? Any milk too?
He does love pikelets/pancakes and I don't do sugar, so its just flour, egg, milk... but I don't want to do that all the time.
Yep might need to give the egg a go. Boiled is a good one.
Ta!
I get quick oats and make it on the stove with milk. I don't eat it myself but have it down now! DH does it in the microwave but I think it's nicer done slowly on the stove!
Who has time for slow breakfasts these days Tan??? :p :p
I know I know!!!! Well the days we are at home they are pretty patient while they wait for it but if it's a rush off to creche day they either get brekky at creche or Nutri Grain! They Areca bit older though and although not the best they do love it!
We use the instant porridge sachets - takes 2 mins in the microwave, you just need to add milk, DS (and I) love them, but yeah, they are not like the porridge my Mum used to make :)
Bah to not introducing Egg. My DHs brother is alergic to eggs so I was a bit nervous the first time I gave it to DS, but he was fine, if he's had it once in eggy bread he should be fine
I think Nutrigrain is pretty high in sugar :(
The funny thing about the egg was that even after I told the nurse that he'd had eggy bread she still ranted on about how I had to introduce a quarter of a teaspoon of HARD BOILED egg yolk (MUST be hard boiled) at 10mths, for three days, then a quarter of a teaspoon of HARD BOILED egg white (MUST be hard boiled) for three days and then it'd be ok.
Sigh!
Oh and I'm also evil for giving him normal pasta, apparently he should be on egg-free pasta until he's had the aforementioned egg introduction.
Ok ok I'm convinced that the porridge sounds quick and simple. Maybe DD will like it too. What can I mix in with hers? What sort of fruits go well? I don't want to just load it up with honey...
I know nutra grain isn't the best and is high in sugar but hey we all do our best and once a week works for us.
As for egg J was able to tolerate it for nearly a year before his first full blown reaction so you just never know. He had scrambled, sunny side, boiled, quiches etc with no reaction other than occasional red cheeks then a tiny bit caused his eyes to swell one day, so it must have built up over time. I would just give small cooked amounts and monitor just like anything else.
Wow Tan I didn't know that sort of thing could happen! Will do. He hasn't had more than eggy bread at this point.
And hey - teddy bear biscuits are my back up option for DD if she is starving and I'm out of ideas! You're right - do what works ;)
I'd put milk as well as the fruit in with the weetbix.
I only cook my porridge on the stove in a little saucepan because i hate the mess in the microwave when it boils over....call me lazy lol :dunno:
Darcy loves pureed apples and sultanas in with her porridge. Blueberries are good too. Ban as are great but they're far too exxie ATM.
Eta, I like my weetbix warm and mushy, but my kids hate it like that. They prefer theirs crunchy with cold milk, so maybe you could try it a bit different?
I was going to make all the same suggestions!!! Lol.
Crumpets
Yoghurt
Porridge
Nutrigrain is a good one (mine used to love it just dry - although now they won't eat it)
Weetabix
Banana & Honey on an English Muffin
Scrambled Eggs
HTH!
Stewed apples. Mashed banana or berries in it while you are coking cooking goes well with oats. You can soak your porrige overnight to make it cook faster in the morning. Oats are naturally sweet so you do not need to add sweetener, as a baby has very sensitive taste buds and can taste the natural sweetness of the oats and fruits.
