Kamarine- I was exactly the same. My supply kept dropping and completely ceased during a very stressful time. If you have a happy and healthy baby with good weight gains then that's enough :D

after another horrible night here...bottles at 6pm 8pm 10pm 2am 6am im thinking of trying a different formula?? she is currently on s26gold and has about 160mls give or take at a time.
any one have any advice?? please??
I dunno PO5 - I've never changed formula just because of feeding more often? Maybe she's having a growth spurt? :dunno:
thanks for the reply Arimeh - this has been going on for ages...one good night only waking once for a bottle the next night waking for 4 :wall: I know she is only 5 and a half months old but it just seems to be getting harder not easier. I try to re settle her but she gets so loud sometimes waking Lucy the only thing that settles her is a bottle

Well if it helps at all, Eden sometimes wakes up at night for a bottle, and sometimes sleeps through. She's not really consistent yet, and she's only a little bit older than Milly?

PO5- I remember DD being so erratic feeding wise that age. Maybe it's not just physical energy she's using during the day but her brain is still rapidly developing. I still find DD eats a heap on days where she's been discovering new things. It's frustrating and I hope it gets better soon!:

Before I risk asking this question in one of the general feeding forums, I thought I would swing it past you ladies first:
Why does the WHO encourage breastfeeding until age 2 whilst there seems to be a general trend for FF bubs to move onto plain cows milk around the age of 1? Surely if the nutrients derived from breast milk are considered beneficial until age 2 and beyond something should be said for giving FF bubs fortified milk until a similar age?
I understand that their solids diet becomes more established and substantial after their first year of life but, in my opinion, I am just not comfortable that my child will be receiving all of the necessary nutrients from the food that I put in front of him which he may (or may not!) ingest.
Besides the cost and convenience, why would one move FF bubs onto cows milk?
Po5- will she drink anymore than 160ml in the one bottle? Maybe try bumping her up to the next level? I can't remember how much DD was having per bottle at that age..but even now sometimes she will guzzle a 240ml bottle and other times she'll be lucky to have 3/4 or half of it! Oh and she's been waking up to twice a night for the last month or so now (you might have seen some of my whinge posts :lol: ). It is so hard, I imagine it is so much harder when you have another child too. :hug: I hope she settles down for you soon, is she due for a wonder week about now?
Life is Good- TBH I haven't really thought about it from a nutritional POV :redface: DD will be turning one next month so all I've been thinking is yay no more formula soon, I guess because "everyone" says they can have cows milk from 1 year old? I get what you mean though, lately DD has hardly been eating any solids, she'll have a couple of bits and then throw the rest on the floor, oh except when I'm eating dinner and then she is like a dog...hovering until she gets food :lol:
Sam, I think its a "done" thing mainly because they recommend you move to toddler formula, which is not that great for kids, lots of sugar and stuff yeah? I've never thought my kids needed it, because by the time they are 1, they have a pretty established diet and don't need the extra nutrients. DS takes vitamins as well and has done since he was 2, which are a HELL of a lot cheaper than formula.
Each to their own of course, but I just don't think its necessary :)
DD had a phase just prior to turning one where she would only want formula. Basically as soon as she turned 1 I let her only have 2 bottles a day. The morning tea one (warm bottle before her nap and after some veg/fruit prior) is just cow's milk so I don't fill her up too much. I only give a toddler formula at night more as peace of mind if she's missed out on anything during the day IYKWIM. She dropped the other bottles with no fuss because she figured out it wasn't filling her up anymore. She's thriving and growth spurting like anything. In size 2 for leg length alone!:
I've always wondered about the BF until 2 but cows milk from 1 if FF thing too. One of those things that I've always wondered, but always been afraid to ask!
As for us - I think we'll be continuing with the toddler formula for a while yet. After two days of each bottle only being three scoops of formula and being made up to the usual amount with cows milk (so only 50mL of cows milk in each bottle) and finding that ever since I started doing it I've been up to my elbows in dirty nappies... I couldn't bring myself to continue. Oddly enough, the child that refused to eat anything other than custard for dinner (he appears to have a horribly sore throat!) can't handle drinking cows milk. Still. I would love to ditch the formula (and the bottles - you can't shake formula in a sippy cup with much success!), now that Sam's 18 months old, but it seems that his digestive system has other ideas.

so I went to the chemist and the lady there suggested I just move her on to the next stage formula...so stay on s26 but for over 6 months so will give that a try once ive finished the open tin we have :)
I never thought about the BF till 2 thingy either...DD1 is such a fantastic eater that it never crossed my mind i was happy to ditch the formula. DS on the other hand was a shocking eater(still is) so he has always been on multi vitamins.

I bf DD until 11mths but started giving her some formula feeds from about 9mths when I was at work.
I went to cows milk at 12mths but have gone back to formula for DD. She still has cows milk at CC but I give her formula at home.
I have been giving her the Heinz nurture care (I think its called) it has a giraffe on it. LOL! Its he number 2 one (not the toddler one).
She has 3 bottles a day. Wake up (100mL), Before arvo nap (200mL) and night before bed (200mL).
Is this too much? She is almost 15.5mths old. TIA
Po5- I'd be a bit wary going onto stage 2...it gave DD awful constipation which lasted for about 2 weeks before I finally gave up trying other things (which weren't working!) and went back to stage 1 formula. She has been fine ever since. Not saying it will happen to your DD, but just something to be aware of :)
Okaaaay - I haven't received any email notifications for this thread. I just came back to check because I couldn't believe that nobody would have responded! Lo and behold a whole bunch of you have and I just didn't know about it. Thanks so much for the feedback and opinions.
Just a little update from our side (somewhat related to my previous question):
As you all know, DS has been on an elemental formula because of his Cows Milk Protein Allergy. Well, he is having bottles containing only 10% elemental formula and 90% NAN HA Gold. It looks like out little man is well and truly over his allergy. He is also having 200ml of A2 milk on his cereal every morning. We are absolutely over the moon about it and I just wanted to share :)
A major upside has been that he has started sleeping through - I think the NAN fills him more than the Neocate ever did! So I am feeling like a new woman with all of this unbroken sleep!
Anyway, because the NAN HA is partially hydrolised, we will probably have to stick with that for a while. I don't think that moving onto a Toddler formula (casein based) will be a good idea because it is a lot harder on their tums than the whey-based starter formula. So for the moment, unless he isn't keen, we may keep him on NAN HA beyond 1 year.
I have heard over and over again that as long as they are still having solids, continuing with a starter formula is fine. I think perhaps beyond 1 year, they shouldn't be relying on formula anyway to fill them up? It should be more of a supplemental beverage than a sustaining one? Anyone have any views on this?
We will be seeing our paediatrician in two month's time and I will run some of these questions past him and let you know what his views are and what he has done with his kids.

Interesting that you mention you are doing ok getting onto Nan HA. It's what we've been using for a while. I know Sam's issues aren't as severe as your son's, but we've been able to progress through to stage 2 and are now on the evil stage 3 Nan HA toddler milk. For the simple fact that you use 4 scoops for the stage 3 instead of the 7 for the others. Also with a switch to 200mL of water instead of 210 I've been able to get some BPA-free bottles that he can use as most don't seem to have a 210 mark.
I tried again to go from formula to cows milk when Sam hit 18 months. A couple of days of 50mL cows milk and 150mL formula and the poor boy still didn't seem to cope. No puking this time, but his poos became quite runny and more frequent than normal. I drink lactose-free milk myself, and he's taken to snaffling my porridge of a morning and doesn't seem to have issues with that, so I'm going to try again soon with lactose-free cows milk and see how he goes. Looks like the A2 could be another thing to try as well, so it's good to hear that your son is going ok with that on his cereal.
As for milk after one... Sam still generally has 3 bottles per day, sometimes 2. He's certainly not using it to fill up, but he seems to need it as a source of comfort more than anything else. I don't mind offering it if he wants it, but also find that sometimes he's only interested in half a bottle rather than a full one. That's ok by me, too. I'm generally starting to wait for him to ask for a bottle (which is kind of funny as he doesn't really speak yet, but he does have ways of telling us what he wants - an empty bottle that he brings to us is his usual method!) rather than giving him one just because it's time.

Just a general question... Naomi is on Bellamys and it recommends about 5 180ml bottles a day for her. But shes probably doing about eight. And I'm not sure if I should worry about this? Is it possible to overfeed?
She was demand fed, still is. And getting some puree at night too. And occasionally finger food (banana etc). Ive tried stretching the bottles out but shes definitely not okay with that.
LIG - Glad its working out. I'd heard the same thing and my tin of formula does state its fine to use after 6mths, just needs solids too.
Thanks for the NAN HA info, BW. I honestly didn't even know that they made a follow on in the "HA" range! Goes to show how out of shop-bought formula circulation I have been! I will definitely have a read up and see where we should go from here (though a part of me just thinks that maybe leaving well enough alone is the answer!).
Tam, our little boy was drinking so much formula before he went onto solids (which is why we moved him onto them early). At four months he was drinking 5 x 270ml of his formula (because it was prescription, the volumes are slightly different). Our paediatrian said that as long as his height and weight were in proportion and he wasn't throwing up after feeds then we should continue feeding him on demand.
The only thing to be aware of it to check the maximum volume that can be given to a baby/infant on the tin (as I recall it is something like 250ml x 5 - but I could be wrong). Giving them more that the total max amount can result in them having more than the recommended daily intake of various vitamins and minerals which, I imagine, could be risky. Well that is what I assumed when my paediatrician told me not to give him anymore than I was and to move him onto solids instead. If she is wanting more that the maximum amount, I would check with a professional and get the OK from them.
Okaaay, I know this has not been visited for many moons buuut I have a question.
Alannah is on S26 step 2 and will have 3 or 4 bottles per day......but will only drink between 300 and 500mls in total alllll blumin' day! I was told by my CHN she should have between 700 and 800mls per day. She has farex atleast 2 hours after her first bottle which is made up with 60 mls and that is inc in the total I mentioned above. Lunch is at this stage a jar of custard etc. Dinner is a veggie....if I can get 4 or 5 little 1/2 baby spoons in her mouth I am very lucky! Grrr.
Her nappies are fine, sometimes they could be wetter but she is happy and sleep right through the night.
I know she won't allow herself to starve but FAR OUT!!!!!!

My DD was exactly the same. She is a petite little girl who just could not drink that much milk plus food. Even now she eats small but frequent amounts. I wouldn't worry too much if your little one is gaining weight. Sounds like she is eating alot of food on top of all that milk and she is just full. The tin is ONLY a guide anyway.
Thanks for your feedback. It is so frustrating and I feel like there is something I am not doing. I am going to try a faster flowing teat in case she just gets tired....:dunno:
My DD has always been really petite and still eats like a bird most meals. I just made sure I only offered healthy foods and offer often. DD didn't even want a lunch meal until 9ish months old but was gaining weight. 7 months os still a short time into solids. It's all fun until 1 year old and your DD will make sure she's getting enough. It's just making sure she gets what she needs which most of it will still come from formula but the guide is just a guide after all. She'll get there and make sure she doesn't starve. It's possible she's just happy with solids and will let you know if she's hungry.

I have dropped her bottles down to 180mls as the amount of wastage is more than what she is drinking per day. $$ :( I have discovered she loves water so need to really monitor how much water she has so she does not fill up on water!
I know I will look back on this in a few months or even a few weeks and wonder why I was so concerned and bothered!

I still think of what a balls up with the stress levels trying to get DD to eat. Just keep plonking food in front of them and make sure it's a variety. If you're worried about iron then get some of the frozen spinach portions and plonk then in whatever you make for your DD. They basically do the rest themselves. DD is still hit and miss with food and she's 2 on Friday but she's healthy height/weight ratio so I ignore random comments of "she's rather skinny, isn't she?" now. She's just petite.

My DD is 9.5 mths and was exclusively BF until about 2 weeks ago when she started to refuse the breast :( She has one BF first thing in the morning but that is it. So after trying to get her to go back to BF I have started her on FF. Just wondering if anyone else has managed to continue a BF combined with FF? I'd like her to keep having the BF in the morning but don't know if she will.
Also she doesn't drink anywhere near the amount of formula recommended. She's on Nan Pro Gold 2. She has about 3 x 90mls at the moment. We do babyled solids and she is a great eater, so I am not too worried at this stage. But I was worried with her only doing the one BF with nothing else, hence starting to FF!

I don't really see the point in introducing your DD to FF. If she is refusing the breast, I don't think she is refusing you, but more she doesn't want to drink much anymore, particuarly if she is a good eater & you are doing BLS. I'd offer her water from a sippy cup rather than a bottle of formula and keep offering the breast in the morning & PRIOR to food.

Thanks for the idea. :) The thing is, she's already loving the bottle. She gets very excited and she loves to hold it herself. And afterwards she is so happy too. She was never like that with an ebm bottle. I guess I'm just a bit lost, she was such a booby girl (5 feeds a day) then suddenly stopped. She did have a blocked nose but she is better now, I think maybe she's just not interested in booby anymore.
Maybe try a Nuby cup instead of a bottle? You're probably going to want to get the bottle off her soon so a cup for milk? The nuby brand ones have a completely silicone top and are grippy shaped. Most woolies and Targets sell them. They are still soft topped like a bottle but not a bottle ITMS. Just speaking from experience that bottles can be a PITA! At the end of the day do whatever feels right hun!:

Thanks CL :) we use the Nuby cups for water at the moment. I've tried a straw cup for water but she can't drink from a straw yet! I've heard it's better to keep water and milk cups separate... Will have to come up with something! May keep the bottles until she can drink her water from a straw, and then switch. What do you use for water?

Some posters have asked *why is it recommended that you continue to breastfeed for 2 years and beyond, but that you cease formula at 12 months*
The fact of the matter is that formula has a deficit of nutrients. Despite the advertising, formula is not breastmilk, and doesn not have the nutrients breastmilk does, and what it does have is not easily digested by the baby. If babies continue on formula they are likely to have nutritional deficits. Where a baby is no longer breastfed they are better to have cows milk (in limited quantities) and a varied solid diet, this will give a better nutritional outcome.
I am so over formula I wish my body had left me bf. I think I am on formula 5/6. We were doing fine on the Heinz nurture and my gp told me DS has reflux. I have no idea how she came to that. He doesn't throw up. Yea he was feeding every 2 hours but that's no reason. He would have a little dribble after a burp but that's it. I started adding thickener but that was annoying me so I bought novalac reflux well lasted 2 feeds he was so Ferral. Karicare sent me free tin of their AR formula and now I have a baby that is pooing every few hours. Arghhhh someone tell me what to do. Could this formula be causing my boy to have bright red dry cheeks or could the pooing and cheeks be teething already?
Kylz-Have you tried NAN HA GOLD i went through 9 formulas before i went back to nan as i found that was the one she least played up on and after a few days she got even better on it hardly any wind and she only brings up a tiny bit with each burp i add one scoop of thickner to help with her reflux and honestly you wouldnt know she even has reflux now.
NAN HA gold has 100% whey protein and no casin i found any formula that had casin in it Ella was horrible on it and very windy the only down side is casin is supose to fill them up for longer (SMA is 80% casin for hungry babies) so they go longer between feeds where Ella will only go 5-6 hours at most but i would rather have a happy baby wake every 5 hours for a feed then a cranky nightmare baby go 8 hours overnight but play up inbetween.
Omg I don't believe that with sma at all I went through 2 tins and was still feeding every 2 hrs. This seems ok I'm just trying to work out why the pooing all the time now.
I'm pretty lucky he generally has last bottle at 7 and goes to bed 8-830 and only wakes at 230 although last few nights it's been 4-430
ah, we used straw for water of one of the silicone topped sippers. DD was on bottles until about 16 months old (hard habit to break until she was ready). DD is 2 now so we use normal cups for water and her sipper thing of a night aftert her bath (she gets to clumsy for a normal cup by that time.:
Kylz-Yeh i know what you mean about the SMA is say's for hungry babies on the tin but ella still fed every 4 hours on it but OMG! did she have belly pain.
The karicare ella pooed heaps to and brought up a lot and i tried the AR and lactose free.
The reason i know ella cant handle the casin after trying so many formula's and she was terrible on all except the 100%whey one is i tried to give her Nan pro which has 70% whey and 30% casin and striaght away after finishing the bottle the moaning and groaning and wind pain started and she was terrible so i went straight back to Nan HA i am to chicken to change to another formula now she is so sensitive with her milk.
She had a bottle at 7pm went to bed at 8pm woke for a bottle at 12am and the again at 5:30 so not to bad i am hoping she will drop that 12am feed before i go back to work fingers crossed.
I have spent $180 on formula tins that didnt agree with her and went in the bin:shakehead:
Yep that Novalac is sitting full less 3 bottles in the pantry. I feel so stupid for even listening to the GP. I think the thickener is helping to keep him fuller but i def dont think he has reflux. The way im going with all this poo im going to need to buy shares in huggies.
Just want to shout to the world that Alannah has been s.l.o.w.l.y. increasing the amount she drinks everyday. Since last Tuesday it has been like this -

I am soooo stoked!!!! I was supposed to get her weighed today because of her low intake but a you can see she is on the increase and is also now feeding herself more or less (solids). Plus drinking about 200mls of water as well throughout the day! She loves her water!!!
Nice to have a place to shout that out to the world instead of people saying 'You know breast is best' lol

DD is a 16mo ex34 weeker. I expressed for 8 weeks and due to supply issues switched DD to formula. I wasn't producing enough milk and wasn't going to let her starve.
