kaz, i checked out diggers club but potatoes arent in until May! grrrrr
Well I just put on my first pot of pasta sauce. I dont have any onions though and Im not impressed about that, but I reckon double the amount of garlic should cover it! lol
The smell is awesome. Combined with the fresh parsley, it smells like a restaurant in here.
Now i'm in the mood for cooking...I gotta go find some other things to cook
Our potatoes are self sown, just throw some in that have sprouted, cover and they will grow, cause Iv'e said that they won't.
If you want clean ones just keep covering them up with straw.
About half of our veggie garden is self sown, seeds grown from the compost soil that he puts on the garden.
Keep an enclosed patch for potatoes as they will keep producing and they do seem to roam, we find them in all sorts of places in the garden.
If you grow kiwi fruit you need a male & female or a grafted one. They do best on a pergola structure or grown like grapes, hope that makes sense.

Its so sad when you loose your garden when you have put so much effort into it.
Danni, grow spring onions, they take no effort and produce really well. Let one go to seed and you will have them growing all year. Ours sometimes look like leeks cause we forget to use them.
Yes we do have spring onions, we had HEAPS. Big thick ones that were strong! hmmm

I have some baby ones growing so I have to wait probably 8 weeks or so.
WHen you let things go to seed....tell me then what you do with them.

We either collect the seeds and place in an airtight container or let them fall on the ground. Our lettuce does this all the time, that why we have lettuce everywhere and all year. Silver beet will grow all year this way also, that's if you can take silver beet all year.
Our garden usually gets dug over properly once a year, we rotate, plant what we want and the rest turns up wherever it pleases.
We are trying raised beds this year, getting to old to keep bending down, and apart from the horrible soil we got its doing OK. Will really have to feed it mid year.
If you have pumpkin and a slow cooker its a great way to make soup. Have also made potato & (large) spring onion soup this way.
We finally got our Strawberry tower happening this week! It's not as big as I had originally planned, the BIG pot got a little busted up, so we couldn't use it. I think DH managed to get 15 plants into the pots/tower, though. Hopefully it isn't too overcrowded once they take off.
Thanks for the suggestions about a no dig garden. I will have to do some more in depth research into this.

I noticed bunnings had the seedlings the other day.
So what do I do with them? How do they grow? blah blah blah
Danni, we got our seedling from bunnings too!
We have done ours as a tower, so we got a big pot (biggest we could get at the time) half filled it with some potting mix, then sat a smaller pot inside the big one, filled the 2nd pot with some mix, then got a 3rd, even smaller pot, sat it inside the 2nd pot and filled it as well. Then we filled the rest of the pots, readjusted them a bit and planted the strawberries.
I have seen them planted in those herb containers, you know the ones that have the little holes all around the outside of the tall pot and you just pop a herb in (or strawberry plant) in the holes.
DH has a friend who has heaps of the white polypipe stuff, and he cut the pipe in half, filled it with some mix and planted the strawberries. They have it going down one side of the fence. I thought it was such a cool space saving idea. you could even hook up a dripper hose to the inside of the pipe for watering. But DH wasn't too keen on the idea.

Forgot to add, my inspiration for strawberries was watching a segment on 9am with dave and kim. If you check out the, sweet things in the recipe section, and look for Self Serve Strawberry Surprise..yummo...don't know if I'll get enough strawberries for this one though.

with the strawberry tower, get a metal rod and use it to stop it all toppling over when you're making it ;)
My veggie garden died over the hot period :( I didn't have a lot of energy to go out and water all the time either so that didn't help. I am going to try and grow a tomato plant in my new little greenhouse and see if it grows over winter. I just planted some Roma seeds today. In my greenhouse I have a Jalapeno plant, one Thai chilli plant, some chives, a pot of Parsley I bought from Coles the other day. I planted Basil, Corriander, Parsley, and Oregano seeds the other day as well.
I do have 3 raised boxes that are 2 x 1 mtrs each, I did plan on having 12 but I might just stick with the 3 for now. I will put shade cloth over them next summer as well to protect them from the searing heat.
I was able to harvest 5kg of Broccoli and .5kg of Peas before my garden died so it wasn't a total loss this year.
5kg of broccoli is awesome missy!! We have just planted our broccoli seedlings so I hope ours are as good as yours!

Woohoo.. DH managed to finally get some "garden mix" for our vegie garden. Capsicums and tomatoes are now in, along with some spring onion "seed tape" The tomatoes were in a container, in a half sunny position, but they are now sitting in a pretty full on sunny spot, and DH is worried lol! I told him to put the pot further out in the sun before he planted them, btu nooo he wouldn't listen to me! Anyway, will see how they go, might get some shadecloth for them?
DD picked up some baby carrot seedlings yesterday, so will get them happening too.
yay for finally getting some dirt for the garden.
our toms are in full sun and thriving. as long as they get sufficient water and maybe every couple of weeks some liquid fertiliser, they'll be fine hun!
Thanks BG, :) I thought it might have been a bit of a shock for them going from a semi shaded spot to full sun? Hopefully they'll pick up in the next few days.
When our little worm army gives us some more worm juice, I'll water it down a little and give the tomatoes a drink. We've got 4 plants in the bed, and another 2 in a tomato tower, so we should get something lol!
we normally water at night, but on the really hot days we had late last month and this month, we were watering fairly heavily in the morning and only lightly at night. our tomatos have gone nuts now - took ages but they are insane. i think we'll be spending part of tomorrow cooking up tomatos into sauces of some sort!
i have 35 pumpkins that are watermelon size not sure what im going to do with those , i have year round lettuces , about 10 plants of sweet corn (yummy ) , peas , green and yellow beans , beetroot , strawberrys , balck berrys raspberrys , logan berrys .
3 Peach trees 2 Green Gage 1 Goldern drop plum , 4 nectrine , garlic , parsley , coriander , Green & Yellow zuchnini's , yellow , green & Red capsicums .
purple cabbages , onions , sring onions and red onions and new thing this year are baby watermelons ( orange size perfect for toddlers ! ) . Potatoes ( dutch cream ) are just about finished . and had huge sun flowers that the seeds are dying from now .
first year i have had a patch and use no sprays just pea straw , sea weed fertaliser and have had awsome results , just waiting to plant out my newly dug patch under a converted graden shed to green house

can anyone tell me how corn works? I thought once the "hair" goes brown, then you pick the cob. Well I did that, and there were barely any yellow kernels on it??
the cob will actually go sideways, and that's the cue to pick. You can also "cheat" and peel back the husk to see how they are going. we have 2 punnetts of corn, and one of baby corn :) Can't wait to see what that's like!

corn takes between 12 to 15 weeks to germinate give or take i cheat and make a slit with my nail and peek in . i planted mine`last wk nov and its ready now . im in tassie with water though .
ill post some pics when i work out how lol , i was lucky i brought the house the tree's are about 30 years old n huge , would like to add citrus one day and an apple possiably .
Well we planted ours in the first week in November but as seeds. SO maybe mine aren't too far away?

thanks for the tip BG, mentioned it to DH and we are going to water both morning and late arvo. A couple of the tomatoes were looking so much better yesterday morning, and it got the better of DH, and he put some shadecloth over them as a temporary fix till he has days off to do something 'better':
The capsicum plants are looking really good this morning, so a big yay there.
DH re-potted the lotsa lemon tree, but is thinking we should put it in the ground when we sort out the backyard a bit better. He is also wanting to put our dwarf mulberry in the ground as well. Just have to make sure we keep them away from the underground lines..will have to do some research into this one. Anyone done a dial before you dig?

we did the Dial Before you Dig thing when we were getting our fence up - soooo simple! a phone call, then the mob you speak to liase with all the relevant departments to send you info
one thing to be aware of - they're not as accurate as you'd hope! our water pipes were out by a fair bit on the plans compared to where we know they are (considering we watch the plumber put them in only 2 years ago), but i'd say underground wires should be more clearly marked (and more accurately)
i would definitely be getting your fruit trees into the ground unless you have significantly large pots - half wine barrels are about the smallest i'd go for fruit trees... we've got all our citrus trees along the fence (hoping they'll grow enough to give us more privacy from psycho neighbour!) and then all the apples/pears/stone fruits further into the yard. so far they're doing really well - planted 16 fruit trees as well as the 3 we already had in, and even with the heats and the large spot fire in the backyard, they're all surviving...
Ooh thanks for that (again) BG ;) We actually have some plans for our place which show the water lines i think? we have the plans for our place plus the rest of the houses around us. We are pretty sure on where the phone lines are, but still wouldn't hurt to get as much info as possible.

Depending on where you live and how much water you have, I would hold off getting the lemon tree. This wind is knocking ours around and so is the lack of water.
When you get one you might have to shift it once or twice as they can be temperamental. We had to shift our twice before it liked its spot.

im got heaps of slugs and snails at the moment but i got some snail bait and they seem to hate it ( suckers lol )
so so far i have..
beans,tomatoes broccili,peas,strawberries,caulifloew.chives,cabba ge,spinach,
im hopeing they dont get drowned though
so how are all you girls gardens going any tips on anything would be great

Well we just got all our pumpkins out and are pulling out the plants tonight. It would probably still grow but Im worried about it wasting water just to get tiny pumpkins in the last minute of the season.
So we got 3 x 3kg pumpkins and probably 4 medium sized ones. Love em!
Still got about 3kg of tomatoes on the plants starting to go red. Once these are picked, we will pull out the plants there too.
Our zucchinis have finished, as have the cucumbers. But the spring onions, parsley, cauli, broccoli, eggplants and capsciums are still going well!
Can't wait to finally clear out that vege bed and get the chooks in there. Will be perfect for winter planting:D
Our strawberry tower is not doing so well..I'm not sure if it is getting too much hot sun, or if I am giving it too much water? Going to try to move it to a shadier position this arvo.
Capsicums are just starting to get some little buds on them...YAY.. We pulled the shadecloth off them all and the tomtoes are looking heaps better too. DH had plans to stake them this week, might get that done on the weekend.
We are just waiting till we get some more gardening time, or that should be time where DH isn't helping everyone else out, and will put in another bed..

ours is still going quite well - DH picking a bucket or more of tomatos each week
we won't be picking our pumpkins for another few weeks - i've read on numerous sites that you should wait til after the first frost (at least) as this helps to sweeten them up. last year we waited til we'd had a couple of frosts and the plant was dying off before we ripped it out. think it was late april or early may - maybe early may cos we were able to burn the plants when we ripped them out...
everything else still doing well i think - dunno - dh checked this week
briggy's girl - My Mum says to wait until the frosts to pick the pumpkins, you get more of them than I do here. Will ask her this weekend as we are visiting the farm.
Our tomatoes are nearly finished, the capsicums are starting to get another crop and the chillies will be ready soon so DH can make another batch of chilli sauce. The silverbeet is growing, can you kill that stuff, but I found a novel use for it the other day. We were having wraps for tea and found that the lettuce is not quite ready so cut up silverbeet really fine and used that instead. DD didn't even know and you could really taste it so will be using it again. As said the next lettuce crop will soon be ready and one of the old plants is just about ready to seed.
Not sure what we will put in for winter, any ideas?
My garden is going along quite well,or at least it would be if I stayed away...the other day I was digging up a few random spuds that had popped up and doing some general weeding when I dug up a quite thick long root about 6mm round. I pulled on it to see where it was coming from as I didn't think that anything near me was big enough to have such a large root. It lead to a cucumber plant that was about a meter away from me. Doh I tried to bury it back under the soil but the damage was done, over the next couple of days three cucumbers started to shrivel up. Hardy little plant that it is , it is trying to regain it's strength and looks like it might just come back from the brink of death.
Tomatoes coming out my ears still yum, I have planted some snow peas, carrots, brocoli, cauliflower and garlic recently. With the colder weather starting to close in I will soon see a big change in the types of veg. coming out of our garden.
We chose to leave our pumpkins till the first frost, we won't be getting a huge table load like we did last year though, we changed growing positions and had less variety of pumpkins this year so I'm not sure if it was the season or our changes that made the difference.
