I've thought of a few more suggestions:
Silk Tree (Albizia julibrissin) - nice foliage, beautiful flowers and quite hardy, they don't need too much water.
Orchid Tree (Bauhinia variegata) - same as above.
Manchurian Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis) - nice autumn colour, hardy.
Robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia) - very hardy, nice autumn colour, does tend to sucker though so can be a bit weedy.
Look 'em up and see what you think.

I've got another one, Crepe Myrtle (Lagestroemia indica). I love these plants, they are sometimes considered a large shrub/small tree because they are usually multi branched low down. They have beautiful flowers, nice foliage and gorgeous bark. These are the ones that people hack back to encourage suckering which produces lots of flowering wood. But I hate it when they get pruned like that, it's a crying shame. I think they look absolutely stunning when they are left un-pruned to form their beautiful vase shape with stunning bark.

oooh I love the Manchurian pear.
I think I'll try and get my hands on one of them.
I got a chinese pistachio this morning - I got a bit over excited and planted it in the spot I was going to put the claret ash in .
No biggy, I'll just put the Claret Ash where the pistachio was going to go lol.
Any idea which of the following is least likely to go for my water pipe?
Claret Ash
Magnolia (The Magnolia X Soulangeana - Rustica Rubra)
Manchurian Pear
Crab Apple
Ornamental stone fruit
I'm a bit anxious about the water pipe....
