we're thinking of getting some bougainvillea to use as privacy plants ... they're pretty, they seem to grow reasonably quickly, and they're not much fun to climb up :)
otherwise, we (at our old place) had jasmine on a trellis, which smelled great in summer.
Forgot to say - we are replacing trellis and climbers with trees as some climbers can really take hold and wreack (?sp) havoc with the fence so I decided I am over them. But that is after maybe 15 years growth so it takes a while.

actually, hey, have you considered **palm trees**?
they are completely awesome and flawless, and you can have coconuts for breakfast and pretend you're on Survivor.
I have it on good authority that Tegam will come and pick the coconuts for you. she'll even put a straw, booze and a little umbrella in them, to make them pina coladas :happydance:
and you can string hammocks up between them to provide the screenage.
Oh and you could use the coconuts for clothing (because the neighbors couldn't see)

what do you use as screens?
How about growing some jasmine over razor wire (or barbed wire if you live somewhere that the local authority frowns upon razor wire) :p

Do it! Like I said earlier you could do a lattice screen :) not expensive and grow the jasmine up that! I am doing that at the moment :)
Does jasmine penetrate the fence?
My neighbor has an awful climber on his side of the fence that has penetrated the fence AND the bricks on our garage :(

I have 50 of the ****ers along out fence line. I make plenty of trips to the tip each month with their 'self' cleaning CRAP

Teagm we had 4 taken out last year, apparently the tree guys were spewing cos they were full of wasps....
For screens i would avoid using pines, a lot of ppl are allergic to the pollen and they smell like cat pee. We have some as a screen bordering or driveway and when they flower they cover the car in thick yellow dust.
Also most of them suck heaps of water up from the soil.
I would consider asking local nursery cos they will know what will thrive in your area.
