MD, thanks, we do have ants! I'll ask about the ant stuff.
I'm thinking about telling the kids it's an adventure - they can still go up into the cubby house but around the new retaining wall. That should keep them off the grass ;)

You could set up a psychological barrier with something like that cheap orange rope - place around the boundary of the lawn area & tell the kids they are not allowed to step over it.
