Can you tell I'm a little excited to find you all again - it's like the old days but with babies in bellies! Whoooo hooooo to us!

I have one word for you all thermomix! I have one and it is the best invention on the planet when it comes to healthy eating, I make everything from scratch in it, my own bread, my own butter, my own 'ketchup' so I don't have to buy stuff with preservatives, I just make it. They are outrageously expensive, but we went on a payment plan, healthy eating is popular in my house :) My DS is the healthiest eater out of all the kids I've ever met and I put it down to good habits from birth.

Yipppeeeeeeeeeee, Eager to make those tasty banana oat treats now!!!!

Kirst - WOOHOOO :grouphug: so glad you've joined us all. Wow you make all your own sauces and stuff?? :o That's fantastic! I'm going to have to google these thermomix things. I've never heard of them. Might come in handy for making baby food as well. I've already been gathering a heap of recipes and plan on making all my own baby food (once bubs starts eating solids). I've always had issues with the amount of preservatives and artificial c$@p that's in the baby food you buy at the shops. Some of the recipes even sound yummy enough I might make them for myself! :rofl:

Dr Tal: Yes I found you - thanks for the message, and thanks to everyone else for the congrats in the messages - I didn't know they were there till Dr Tal told me about them :)

In the thermomix, I grind my own spices and toast them, grate hard cheeses and chop anything you can think of...I make sorbet and icecream and it all takes almost no time at all. They were originally invented to make preservative free baby food, then people discovered so many more uses for them. All this talk of pumpkin soup has made me want to have it for dinner too, I think I might - thermomix makes soup too :) yum yum.

Hello to all the new healthy mums :D this thread is becoming very informative and im loving it!

I am going grocery shopping today and im going to make those cookies that C1 suggested and........ im so making the Zucchini Noodle slice that eliselouise put up! that sound so yummy - definatly something i think i can eat!

And Holl i have been wanting a WII fit for awhile now - but i would have to agree that getting out and going for a walk or doing some exercise would prob be better not to mention cheaper!!!!

HJ - Very sorry to hear about your dog :hug: That is never an easy decision to make.

I have a Wii (it was given to me for Christmas) I haven't gotten the fit yet though. I do play sports and resort from time to time though. It's definitely not the same as actually getting out and doing exercise but you also get out of it what you put in. You can either really get into it and do full movement and really work yourself (and you can, both DH and I have been sore for days after fencing or rowing or something like that) or you can just make small wrist movements and not work youself so much.

Ammaki - Sorry to hear you are sick. That's no fun at the best of times and would be absolutely miserable when you are pregnant. Make sure you continue to eat healthy (lots of fruits with vitamin C and cook with lots of garlic) and hopefully you'll get over it quickly :crossfingers: I reckon the thin veggie soup (I think it's the first recipe that Audax gave us) would be a really good sick 'comfort' food.

Kirst - I think the sorbet and icecream sold me on the thermomix. I've had my mouth watering all last night and this morning thinking of all the different sorbet types I can make (lemon, watermelon, mango, passionfruit) YUM! (wish there was a mouth watering icon to put here :lol: )

AFM - Unfortunately I never got around to making my pizza last night :shakehead: We had a few issues with our pigs (in that the piglets got out and were running around everywhere and mumma pig was going nuts!) So it was about 8 before I even thought about making dinner, so I just warmed up the left over pumpkin soup and made some garlic and cheese whole grain bread to go with it.

Hmmm - so many yummy food ideas, so little time! ;)

hj - Sorry to hear about your dog. :comfort: I plan on getting out for a walk each day when Bosley arrives - just managing the 10 steps to the mailbox atm though! We have a Wii Fit too (DH begged and begged and I refused and refused and one day he just came home with it!). I haven't used it yet though...

Dr Tal - Now I can't decide whether to make pumpkin soup or mushroom soup for lunch! Am leaning towards mushroom soup because I had pumpkin and bacon yesterday! With garlic soy and linseed bread, mmmm! I am keen to try 'baby led solids' when Bosley starts eating (he has to arrive first!) but also bought a new blender at Christmas so I can make my own purees if I decide to go down that road. I don't like the idea of processed baby foods either - we're trying really hard to eat healthily now, it seems a shame to spoil it by feeding our kids tinned stuff when they start to eat!

Kirsten - I am hoping to rival you in the 'best-eating child' stakes when Bosley arrives! It is so great to hear from you in a non-ttc environment and I've been stalking your belly buddies thread! Go December 26th!

Cherished - Did you mention you make your own bread? We used to have a bread maker and it was heaps cool, but time-consuming. Oh, and I love your banana-oatmeal cookies; DH wasn't too keen though, which just means more for me!

AFM - Any ideas for a non-unhealthy sweet baking idea to make for friends who are coming for morning tea on Saturday?

JL i found a recipe for banana mini muffins; im not sure how healthy/ unhealthy they are tho :redface:


Ingredients:

• 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour
• 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 1/2 tsp bi-carbonate soda
• 3/4 cup banana, mashed
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
• 1 egg, lightly beaten
• 3/4 cup milk

Icing:

• 250g cream cheese
• 4 tbsp icing mixture
• 2 tsp finely grated lemon rind

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C.
Line a 24 cup mini muffin pan with patty pans.
Sift flour and bi-carb into a bowl and add brown sugar. Set aside.
In another bowl lightly beat the egg and add milk, vegetable oil and banana and stir.
Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined.
Spoon into muffin pans and bake for 10-12 mins.
To make the icing, warm the cream cheese in the microwave for one minute and add lemon zest and sifted icing mixture.
Beat with electric mixer for 2 mins.
Transfer into a piping bag immediately and pipe onto cooled muffins.

JLeigh: so many great recipes on bestrecipes website, one of my favorites on there and so easy is lemon and yoghurt cake!!!! YUM!!! although I only put in half the sugar! It is good to be in a non-ttc environment :) thanks for the stalking, makes me feel special to be stalked.

Dr Tal: The mango sorbet is out of this world! YUUUUUUMMMM I have made nectarine ice cream, vanilla ice cream, raspberry and coconut ice cream and chocolate ice cream! DELICIOUS. the ice cream is nicer than any ice cream you can buy. I have some cream in the fridge, might make some tomorrow....mmmm ICE CREAM!

Anyways i tried the sugerless cookies yesterday - maybe i did something wrong but they did not taste the best :(

And for dinner last night we had the Zucchini noodle slice and that was DELICIOUS!! very nice will be having it again for sure!

Have decided one night a week is going to be vego night! if i did anymore than that DH might divorce me!

HJ - When I mentioned a vego night to DH he wasn't at all impressed. But I didn't tell him what night it was going to be. The first one I did a spag bol type recipe, but used lenils and bulgur (not sure if that is even close to being spelled correctly) instead of mince. Made sure that I had heaps of chunky vegetables in it (capsicum, chunky tomato bits, mushrooms) and lots and lots of herbs basil, oregano, thyme, so that it was tasty and chunky. He didn't even know there was no mince in it till I told him when he'd finished eating it!

I put 1/4cup of maple syrup in my banana oat cookies (I have a bit of a sweet tooth and not sure they'd have gone down so well sweetenerless) so maybe that was the difference when I made them.

Kirst - Sounds like your DS likes his healthy food as much as you do! That's fantastic!

Ammaki - those muffins sound pretty yummy.

JLeigh - Unfortunately all my sweet recipes are anything but healthy. That having been said I reckon Cherished banana oat cookies with 1/4cup of honey or maple syrup might fit.

Well, I've just eaten 2 scones with jam and cream for morning tea and am about to back up to go out to lunch with my parents and grandfather, so not much healthy eating going on for me atm!

I too have decided that one night a week will be vego (and yep, any more and DH would attack!). Last night I did sweet potato and garlic soup with my soy and linseed garlic bread - I didn't get my soup for lunch so I needed a fix! DH has taken the leftovers to work so it obviously passed his test! I added some extra light Philly cheese and it was soooo creamy!

Kirsten - The lemon and yoghurt cake sounds fantastic! I always halve the sugar in recipes too!

hj1981 - I added 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to the cookies (so I can't call them sugarless anymore either!). Maybe they just weren't to your taste.

Audax - I meant to say ta for your recipe ideas last time! You sound very talented.

Cherished - Yep, be thankful you don't have a DH who 'needs' meat in almost every meal. Actually, mine isn't bad at all - we have very small portions of meat, and he loves seafood and chicken, so we only end up eating meat 2 or 3 times a week.

Tonight is kangaroo roast - very high in protein and low in fat! Sorry vegos, but yummy! :redface:

hey had to duck back in for a quick update... my "healthy" has been awol. Copped gastro on Sun night - vomited ~30 times in ~12 hours and ended up in hossie on drip + zofran. Back at home & still recovering, have managed to get down a bowl of Audax's yummy soup but otherwise just crackers & toast for me atm. Am now coping with the secondary bit of gastro (the "other" end :wall:) so hope to be back on the healthy wagon... erm.. maybe next week when I might be able to eat again properly :o

Have to say, what kinda karmic reward is gastro... the VERY day I decide to start being healthier!! (admittedly DS had it on Fri night so mebbe I should be so surprised - I just copped the PG special version!).

Great to see everyone else is going well & look forward to being back soon.

Hi!! to everyone else, sorry for lack of personals, a bit busy with DD atm.

AFM - I lost another 2.2 kg this week so Im pretty happy with that. I go back to my FS on the 8th June so hopfully by then I would have lost 20kg atleast and she will give me some fertility drugs. Been abit slack this week, so about to put DD to bed and get on the exercise bike. The Monday weigh ins come around so quick lol.

Cherished: My DP is a vegaquarian!! It's hilarious when we go out for dinner, I always order the bit meaty rare meal with a red wine and he has some vegie or seafood meal with a light fruity white wine. They always go to give him the mountain of meat and me the girly food.

Dr Tal: good idea with the maple syrup that would go nicely with the banana and oats....yum! Nothing wrong with maple syrup either.

We eat mostly vegetarian at home because I can't be bothered making 2 meals.

Kirst - :spit: :rofl: about giving your DH the 'girlie' meal. I really cracked up at that one.

I suppose I can't tsk too much though, I nearly caved for a Dreamy Donut (mmmmm cheesecake flavour) but I passed a healthy juice stall on the way and got one of those instead. Yummy strawberry apple banana juice :clap: I was so proud of myself.

MM - Don't give your DH a choice :D I didn't give mine one the first time. But I also didn't tell him the meal was vegetatian. The trick is to pick something that COULD have meat in it, but leave the meat out! I think he'll find it's not so ba. I know my DH would have come kicking and screaming to vego night when I first started it if he had known.

Mumma Mia - scallops are... omg that's hard to answer. Sea-food - little round white things with an orangey bit on the side. Sometimes served crumbed (makes 'em really hard to recognise!). Btw, ur weight loss is going so well, congrats!!!

Dr. Tal - omg potato fudge, I didn't realise such a thing existed!! It's naughty, but gosh I'd love the recipe.

JLeigh - was just in hossie for Monday, but haven't been off the sofa/bed since... tricky with an 18m.o.! Luckily have got my mum flying in to help out so I can recover.

I think I'm actually fantasising about food now lol... can't wait until I can eat properly again. Ok i've hit my "sitting up" limit... hope everyone else is going well and eating lots of super-yummy healthy food :)

Oh hj ive had so many hot dogs cravings! Its ok, i put myself in the naughty corner..

Jumped on the scales this morning for the first time in a while :o did NOT liek what i saw. Time to buckle down. No more naughty bits & pieces...

I have an appointment with a nutritionist next week; im going to ask him how to go about possible losing some of this weight healthily. I was over weight before falling pg so dont panic, im not a stick panicing over the kilos haha. I really shouldnt have gained at all :(

Ammaki - Don't be too hard on yourself about having gained weight. No where have I ever heard that if you were overweight before being pregnant that you should not gain any weight when pregnant (I could be living in a bubble, but I doubt it). Not that pregnancy should be an excuse to eat whatever you want and not be healthy, but don't beat yourself up for having gained weight.

HJ - Bulgur is a whole grain. You can usually get it at health stores, or if you have a middle eastern specialty store near where you live you can probably get it there as well. It's sort of similar to couscous but is supposidly more healthy (Not sure if that's true or now, but I heard it somewhere). It sort of makes the pasta sauce have that grainy texture that it would have it you had really fine mince in it.

Belfie - I'll PM you my mum's potato fudge recipe (I seem to have missplaced my recipe and can't remember it :redface:) after she e-mails me with it (she's visiting my brother at the moment, so it might be a couple of days). I won't post it on here because it's anything but healthy and I refuse to be the downfall of healthy eating in this thread :lol:

MM - Scallops are a mollusk (but VERY different to clams and pipis and the like). I LOVE them they probably come close to being my favourite seafood. Belfie probably did a good job describing them. I like mine without the roe (orange bit) though.

AFM - This weekend on the exercise front (well kinda) I am planning on mowing the lawn (assuming it doesn't rain again). I also want to do some weeding and pruning in my garden beds. I will be cleaning out my bird cages and cleaning my fish tanks. Then I am hoping to finish painting the baby's room. I am also hoping that I can get DH to walk the dogs with me (assuming he gets home from work at a reasonable hour) tonight and each night over the long weekend. On Monday I am hoping to be able to bring my horse up and do some circle work with him (that always uses up HEAPS of energy) and depending on how well he listens there I might get DH to have a ride and if he behaves for DH I'm hoping to be able to ride him in the yards for 20-30 minutes or so :dance:

I don't have any ideas on eating yet though. :redface:

I need to do housework this weekend, i cant mop anymore, hurts my back too much so i'll sweep then attempt to have DP mop. Bathrooms need doing. Cleaning normally makes me work up a sweat. We have DSD so was thinking of maybe taking a walk to the park tomorrow afternoon or something.

Food wise, no idea what im going to do. Have to sit and plan that today so i can do grocery shopping this weekend!

Belfie - I had 2 nights in hossy at about 22 weeks because of vomiting too, so you get heaps of sympathy from me. It was weeks before I felt OK again. :hug: Enjoy having your mum with you!

hj - The kangaroo roast was yummo - I think I love roasts more for the veges than the meat. I did roast potatoes (skin on cos it's low gi), carrots, pumpkin, onion, peas and zuchini. Usually I do sweet potato and parsnip or turnip, but didn't have any and I really missed it!

Sweet Potato and Garlic Soup (Serves 6)

1kg sweet potato, peeled and chopped
1 onion, chopped
6 cloves of garlic, crushed/chopped (or as much/little as you like!)
6 cups stock (chicken or vege)
250g extra light spreadable Philly cheese (I use less than this - about 180-200g)
Parsley, for garnish

Boil sweet potato, onion, garlic and stock until soft (about 15 minutes).
Allow to cool slightly before blending until smooth. (You can freeze it at this stage if you like.)
Return to the saucepan. Whisk in the Philly cheese as it reheats.
Serve garnished with parsley and with toast etc.

Ammaki - Try not to stress too much about the weight gain. Focussing on healthy eating and moderate exercise is more important than how much you weigh.

Dr Tal - Seeing as you're also doing my share of exercise, I have decided that I don't need to do any this weekend, lol!

AFM - I have decided to honour the ANZACS by making Anzac bikkies for tomorrow - they're not too unhealthy, are they? I will halve the sugar, and they have lots of yummy oats! :D

Any ideas for how I can drink more water? It's never been my favourite drink, but lately I have just been totally forgetting to drink - breakfast is OK, but I often then get to tea time and realise I've had nothing all day, water or otherwise! :redface: Even if I have a bottle next to me, I still forget to drink it!

Thought I might pop in and join you. I havent read all your posts yet so I am sorry if I double up on already mentioned things.

Few things I have been thinking about;
1. Should I get a swine flu jab? My instinct is saying no... especially after all the bad things in the media yesterday! Thoughts?
2. Where the hell is my belly (no seriously is it normal to still be tiny at 5 months??)
3. I thought shellfish was off limits, i.e. mussels/scallops. Is this right?

1. Swine flu jab is up to you, I wouldn't personally get it, I have heard too many stories of it causing problems.
2. Some people don't show :D I know a girl who had a completely flat belly with her first until about 8 months (and she is very skinny) and is only showing now with her 2nd and is 7 months. Lucky you, I looked like I was carrying a watermelon under my top with DS ("I carried a watermelon?")
3. So many conflicting reports about seafood...I tend to eat it if I trust it. but with DS I was off seafood altogether.

Dr Tal: you are way too busy for my liking, I'm at the sit on the couch and be exhausted point.

hj: ok, I'll spill I ate gross bain marie chinese food, it was disgusting but I loved it. Today for lunch I had a yummy salad and boiled eggs so all better again :)

Jleigh: I was going to suggest taking a bottle with you, but if you already do that, I have no idea...you'll drink a whole lot more when your bub is born, I was the thirstiest person in the world when breast feeding!

Belfie: hope you're feeling up to eating very soon, poor thing. not fun with an 18m/o I agree!

Ammaki: people put on different amounts of weight when pg, I think if the body is hungry it needs to be fed - esp when pregnant, the nutritionist will be able to help out with ideas though. :) good luck.

I am thinking about making a pumpkin and coconut cake, found the recipe recently and have been wanting to make it, although I am sitting and being tired and not wanting to move, I just wish the cake would make itself, I'm at that 5 week super tired phase!

Hi Fuzzy! My thoughts on your thoughts ;)

1. I'm still very much up in the air about the swine flu jab. I have a very long and complicated medical history of asthma (and being allergic to almost all the asthma treatments out there) bronchitis and pneumonia. Basically my lungs are seriously messed up and look like I've been smoking 4 packs a day for about 50 years despite the fact I've never smoked a cigarette in my life. So when I get sick it really knocks me and I usually end up hospitalised. Even considering my medical history I am still not conviced of the vaccine's safety. I've spoken quite in depth about it with my Ob both the vaccine and the pro's and con's considering my medical history. But he won't recommend either way. All he did say is that if I do choose to have it I should wait until after week 20.

2. I don't think there is any 'normal' or 'abnormal' as far as belly growth goes. I think it's really all dependant on the woman, her baby, and her particular body shape. I know I didn't really show until after week 22. Before that I could very easily pass as not pregnant depending on what I was wearing. But somewhere around week 22 I popped overnight. Litrally. I went to work on friday, was wearing a shirt that I'd worn before getting pregnant and all through my pregnancy. It wasn't tight or uncomfortable. Saturday I was going out shopping and was being lazy and didn't want to go get clothes off the line so went to put that same shirt on and it wouldn't fit.

3. I think there are two main reasons that you often hear not to eat shell fish. The first is that if not stored/chilled properly it can go off very quickly. And shellfish that is off is very dangerous to eat at the best of times, let alone when you are pregnant. So like Kirsten said I wouldnt' eat it unless it came from a source I could trust (in my case a friend's partner works on a fishing ship and I get all my shell fish from him). Secondly, if caught in shore there is a higher chance of shell fish (most being filter feeders) of having highish levels of mercury or other heavy metals. So if you ate it every day or even regularly there is a risk of these metal bio-accumulating in your body and reaching toxic levels. Because I LOVE shellfish this is another thing I specifically asked my ob about. He said it was okay to eat but in moderation. He said as long as I only ate one serve every fortnight or so I was safe to eat it. BUT it had to be COOKED and it had to be HOT. So no oysters on the half shell and no chilled prawns.

Kirst - Well JLeigh seems to think I'm doing enough exercise for both her and me, so maybe if I add in some vaccuuming, mopping and bathroom cleaning I can have you covered as well :rofl:

Can you post the pumpkin and coconut cake recipe? It sounds pretty yummy! (I think everything is sounding pretty yummy to me at this point in time :spit: )

Considering your only a week or so out from your EDD I think you POSSIBLY have a reason to not exercise. (although I've heard that walking regularly up until the birth can make the birth process easier, not that I know from personal experience, I think I might have read it somewhere).

pumpkin and coconut cake

125g butter
1 cup raw sugar ( I would use just over 1/2 cup)
3 eggs
1 1/2 cups cooked mashed pumpkin
1 cup dessicated coconut
1 1/2 cups SR flour
1/2 cup sultanas
1 tblsn orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest

Cream butter and sugar then add eggs one at a time.
Add pumpkin and coconut and mix well
Fold in flour
Stir n sultanas and orange juice and zest
Place in greased loaf tin
Bake on 180 deg for 1 - 1 1/4 hours

Glad to know I dont have to worry about sleeping on my back yet or about having a small belly. I am not a skinny type so maybe I am just lucky. Not going to have the flu jab either. As for shellfish, I love mussels so I may cook them once or twice. Dont like oysters or prawns so I am all good there anyway.

I think I have this 'balance' thing worked out... go to BodyBalance at the gym, then balance that out with McDonalds for dinner!

In my defence, I was very active all day cleaning tree bits out of the back yard, gardening, and moving (light) furniture for the carpets to be installed today. And lunch was a plate of vegies & a tiny little lamb rump (DH took the bigger ones) with the fat cut off. And breakfast was a very responsible bowl of porridge.

I dont think its too bad when you do it rarely either. Not at all would be ideal but hey I'm not perfect. I have to try body balance! I have been doing Body attack for ages and am still doing that once a week but it does get my heart rate up a little high I think (140 bpm) and I can no longer do all the 'high knees' running so I am hiding at the back of the class. Might give body balance a go..

If you still need a good sweaty work out, BodyVive is also good. I did it this morning :D Its low impact aerobics and uses resistance bands for a lot of it. Warning on hips work out - it's a killer! :D

I weighed myself this morning before BodyVive & have lost weight again. Not on purpose, but just because I'm exercising more. on 12th april, I was 93.5kg, then the 19th I was 93.6, and today I was 93.3. My start weight at conception was 84. I can't find my gym sheet or I could give more dates & weights. I'm quite happy as that means the baby is still growing (belly getting bigger by the hour!) but my butt (aka 'Counter weight') is getting smaller. :) Just through shaking my groove thing at the gym.

Yaaaaaaaaay I had dinner! And I had dinner yesterday too! And everything is staying where it should, I'm so happy (and feeling a little more human). Weighed myself today - I've lost 2kg since last Sun :o so suddenly am feeling quite svelte! Even managed to venture outside (yup, off the sofa!) and have a little walk (while the dogs had a play). So I'm hoping to get back into normal life & food soon. I'm determined to eat & exercise well, so still reading to keep myself motivated (ok and I'm only hallucinating a little bit about being able to eat chocolate again... :redface:). I'm finding I can only eat meals half the size of what I was, so I figure I'll try to keep eating smaller portions. Plus after nothing but toast/rice crackers, ANYTHING tastes delicious, so I'll try not to re-junk my tastebuds. Plus my mum is here, so she's helping get me yummy food. Gotta love mums!
