Hi Everyone,
I'ts been a while since I've been on BellyBelly and I'm not even sure I'm posting in the right spot. Anyway, I'm just wanting some advice/ resurrance. I had a midwives app today and she scared me to death by saying that I'm most likely going to have gestational daibetes because my last two babies have been 4.2kg and 4.6kg and the last one was macrosomia and i'm slightly overweight so I have increased chances. So she is sending me straight for the 3hr GTT instead 1hr test. Just wondering if there is anyone who has had a macrosomia baby and not had not had GD in subsquent pregnancies. By the way I did not have GD in my other 2 pregnancies. Any advice info or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Mummytobell... So I had to google macrosomia, from what I read GD can be a factor in this, but there are also other factors. I personally wouldnt worry about the GTT until you have done it and have the results back. Not sure what your midwives/OB's way to treat the GD is, but its very managable by diet. Dont be scared by having GD, its treatable and the stress can also make your sugar levels high.

I had my long glucose test and the results came back fine! I'm so relieved.

Yay LL that's great news :)

that's great news ladylove! :D

I think the blood sugar spike was stress related actually. I can't wait to finish work!!!

That's true LadyLove. When I was sick or especially stressed/worn out my levels would spike really high.

Hi guys
I'm subscribing to this thread - i'm a type 2 diabetic and so this thread has particular relevance to me :P I just hit the 13 week mark and my endocrinologist has already said that i'll be most likely on insulin the moment the GD window opens in the (?) third trimester. eek. I've only ever been on diabex to manage my diabetes. bleh.
LadyLove great news! one less thing to worry about! :-)

Hi, I found out I had GD about two weeks ago. So far so good, keeping my levels under control with diet.
I have Coeliac Disease as well as being vegetarian so wasn't too thrilled with yet another diet change, but as long as baby is ok, then I'll do anything I have to. I wasn't in any of the risk categories so it was rather unexpected.
Did anyone else find themselves getting really tired once they adjusted their diet? I don't feel like getting off the couch at all!

Hi SareBear - I found the first 4-5 days were the worst for me (stupid sugar withdrawal), then I started to feel pretty normal again. I also found trying different foods and snacks to see which gave me more sustained energy helped. I don't envy you having to juggle coeliac + vegetarian + GD!

Hi Kimbles, I'm glad that you started to feel normal again after a few days, hopefully I'll get there soon. I'm starting to experiment a little bit now, I was following a chart the dietician gave me exactly, which was really limiting. The meal plan that went along with it looks much easier but I didn't want to risk going over. The chart says 1-2 serves (15g) of carbs for a main meal, the meal plan has at least 3-4. That's a bit of a difference.
So glad to chat to people that understand! Thanks for your reply Kimbles.

I was allowed 2-3 serves of carbs in a main meal, and 1 serve per snack.
I was also told cheese or nuts as an additional snack if still hungry. Not sure why cheese was ok if a glass as milk counts as 1 carbs serve, but whatever! It does get easier.
One of my favourite meals was salad, a piece of fruit and a roll or a slice of bread for lunch, that was something I found more filling.

Thanks Kimbles, I've increased the carbs a little bit for main meals and I feel so much better, my levels are still way under too so it's working well.
I've been having salads too, luckily it's one thing that I really feel like eating during this pregnancy.
My mum bought me no added sugar ice cream as a treat, yum!!!

Hiya Ladies!
Subbing to this thread too! I had GD with my first pregnancy, managed to control it with diet and exercise and had a normal 3.7kg (8lb 4oz) sized baby. DS was in SCN for the first couple of days because of low blood sugar, tube down into his tummy to be formula fed to keep his sugar levels from dropping until my milk came in. I felt like such a terrible mama. That was the worst part of having GD.
My OB has pretty much said that I'll have GD again for the second pregnacy. Which annoys me a little but hey.. I guess the most frustrating thing for me is that during my first pregnancy I exercised at the gym and ate well, and got GD.. so this pregnancy, having a toddler and working full time, I haven't been able to exercise (at all!) and I kinda thought to myself that if I exercised and ate well and still got GD then I might as well enjoy this pregnancy and not worry too much about trying to hit the gym every day!
I had my 2 hour GTT today (skipped the 1hr one.. ). Hopefully will hear on Friday during my 24 week appointment with my OB that I DON'T have GD.. but preparing myself for the bad news.
Anyway, I'll keep you all posted with the good (or bad) news!

Hopefully the test results will be good news!
I took it as a way to keep my diet in check so I didn't let myself get out of control. In the end my baby was 3.33kg, and had to be given 1 formula feed while I was in recovery from a c/s - because I'd been fasting her sugar levels were low - but then I was able to attempt feeds myself.
Of course it didn't all go to plan as I'd have liked, but whatever has to be done in my baby and my best interest was the most important thing for me.
For me, the GTT was the worst part, as I was allergic to the liquid I had to drink, so I had lots of sugar, an empty stomach, a baby kicking my insides and an allergic reaction to add to the mix!!

Hope to hear some good news tomorrow BlackRose!
Did everyone have extra monitoring towards the end of your pregnancy? I'd been told that there would be from 36 weeks but the ob I saw last appointment wasn't my regular one (I'm going through team care so usually see midwives anyway), and she said there was no need.
I'm able to control it with diet and my levels are generally in the 4's or 5's. I'll be 37 weeks tomorrow. I'm a bit worried now that I should have queried it further.
Thanks for your help!
