playpens and gates arent an option for us due to tge layout of the house. and putting stuff up high isnt either cause we dont have cupboards that arent floor level. and just picking up after her is fine except when the things she can get at and drop are glasses or plates.
this is going to be tough... as most of the cupboards havent got handles next to eachother itms.. hmmmn
We didn't spend a single penny on any baby proofing items. We used discipline.... no we aren't "strick" or "harsh" parents, but both our girls learnt pretty quickly what they could touch and not touch. A loud uh ahhh (can't spell the word im trying to use LOL) or No and moving them away seemed to work. When it came to them touching a power point well sorry to say (and all those no smacking parents out there close your eyes now) we gave them a smack on the hand, with dangerous things such as that there was no beating around the bush, we believe that need something a bit more then saying No and moving them away, it was a lesson they needed to learn from quickly.
In saying that DD1 was the only one to touch a power point, DD2 hasn't but knows not too.
I think children are smart no matter what their age and if you explain things to them and show them boundaries then they learn pretty quickly.

I do agree with that. We got a playpen/gate thing to go around our fire place. I don't want her to go near the fire, but i want her to know she cant and know why, rather than her not going near it just cause she can't reach it/never even know its there itms. But at the same time I want her to be able to have free roam of the house with out me having to worry about her, just in case I'm not watching her like a hawk 24/7:
I put them in coz I preferred them over telling DS no, constantly all day. Don't like feeling like I'm negative all the time. I also like the fact that I can let him explore everywhere he can get into so I don't have to curb his curiosity. But we did try the no and redirection, but didn't seem to work. Just seemed to egg him on more. Im more lenient with what I allow him to play with, but DH gets annoyed pretty quickly. We have open plan too with island, which pretty much made gates impossible/expensive.
Checkout tot locks. they work On cupboard doors using a magnetic system. Best locking system I've seen :-)
Good point TT40 and with a fire place that is something you really don't want to take any risks with, particularly in winter. I think for that a gate is the perfect idea, even if she learnt not to go near it, accidents can happen and she could still trip etc.... plus you have the 24/7 watch thing, you can still teach her the dangers and to stay away with the gate up too. Our house is very open so made keeping an eye on the girls alot easier!
We only had to tell DD1 (mainly, DD2 has learnt from DD1) once or twice No before she learnt. So didn't feel negative at all. How cheeky you r bubba was egged on by it more though hahahaha:
Yep little terror, thought I could teach him not to touch. But no he understands what we say. Comes up to us and says no, with pointy finger and all. Hes just learnt to pull out the dining chairs to climb on the dining table. That's a definite no and redirection, but may take a while.
I had a look at the website... so do you need that thing like a key to 'unlock' the cupboards? I wasn't sure I understood how it worked.. but if its like a key, I can see it so getting lost =P:
My SIL has tried just about every clip/strap but as her 2 year old is strong as an ox he just breaks most of them. They've had the most success with the Ikea stuff.
My trick to try and keep kiddies out of cupboards and drawers is to give them one eg. They are allowed to play in the Tupperware cupboard and/or a drawer with plastic cutlery. I also have a slide lock on the pantry cupboard just in case.
Have you tried the fridge straps? You can get some for cupboards without handles as well.:
Taureen thanks for posting that pic! The one on the top is what we are going to use for our draws as we aren't too keen on drilling holes for screws with the magnetic ones or clipping ones. :-)
highly recommend an oven lock and a stove splashback. We've just put one on, even though DD is only 11 months! It works brilliantly and helps keep the floor clean and free from splatters too!
