Who Does NOT Have a Large Flat Screen TV

We have one and I have very mixed feelings about it. I do enjoy the screen size, but I really hate how DH is so precious over it. It has caused many arguments. It has been damaged, within a month or so DD1 took the centre of the panel with a screw diver and then I caught her trying to clean it with screw threaded with a number of bolts. When we were renovating and had tradies come around DH wanted me to cover it with a sheet so they could not see it. He was afraid of it being stolen (you wont believe how many times he has asked if I have advised our insurance company of it), so DD1 and I had to sit home all day whilst the tradies were there and not be allowed to watch TV. I went against his wishes as a flat screen covered with a sheet still looks like a flat screen. I had a go at him about valuing the TV more than us and he backed down saying he was concerned for our safety if someone broke into the house.

If I knew how much stress it was going to cause I would have said no, but then again I was stressed enough by his harping on and on and on and on about wanting the blasted big tv and surround sound set-up. We are planning on wall mounting it soon to keep it out of reach. DD1 still touches it no matter how much she is told off and now DD2 is getting in on the act. So if you get on, put it on the wall!

ETA: just though I would add that our old TV was on the way out.

We've got a good TV (Loewe) - came with DP. But although the screen's not that big, it's bulky cos it's about 6 years old.

I don't want a bigger screen but I'd like a flat screen that I can mount on the wall for two reasons:

a) so that it's not taking up space on the entertainment unit
b) so DD can't fiddle with it.

But I can't really justify getting rid of it when it works fine.

There is absolutely no way we'll be getting a big screen. I think they look hideous. They overtake the whole room. I'd be happy enough with a screen a bit bigger than a portable TV size.

I did see something whizzy that I also liked. We need a bigger entertainment unit anyway (ours looks silly - it's too small for the room) and you can get one made where the TV is hidden until you want to use it and then the screen magically lifts out of the unit.

Can't really justify that expense either solely for the whizziness so when the time comes I think I'll just get a wall-mounted smallish flat screen.

We don't watch much TV and DP is VERY anti-TV - mind you, we both spend far too much time on the computer so it's just one vice instead of another.

We have a small flay screen. Our 15 year old TV had a permanently green picture so we splurged on the cheapest TV in the shop.
I don't see the point in spending enough money for a holiday on a giant TV. I'd rather have the holiday lol.

Astrid: Ah! at last another family who has children that touch the TV!!! Something that has always confused me is why other families with small children don't seem to have issues with their kids touching their things even though those kids are little rascals!!! ;) yet i have pretty good kids but all my stuff gets wrecked! I assumed that other people have more money to replace everything as soon as it's broken/damaged... or that maybe I am just not strict enough... but i am pretty strict compared to most parents LOL ah but maybe my kids are just like me and just simply have a tendency to take things into their own hands instead of bothering to ask for help! :think:

We brought a 68 cm 'old style' TV 8 years ago and we wont replace it till it is worn out - even then DH would be quite happy to not replace it at all. We aren't even sure if it will take a set top box for digital LOL. The IL's have one, but theirs is the really wide screen type and everyone on it looks distorted, like they are too wide - watching anything with Bert Newton on it is just crazy ROFL. The ONLY thing I like about them is that they can be mounted on the wall - great way to keep little fingers off them. Our PC monitor is a 19inch flat screen which has a TV tuner but I have never bothered with it. I do like watching DVDs on it though.

My question is though - where did all the 'old' TVs go? They can't have sold every last one of them. It just seemed like all of a sudden flat screen LCD and Plasma teevs were the only ones in the shop.

We don't need one, thus we don't have one. Technically we don't even need a TV but its my 5 minutes peace luxury item, lmao.

Other problems with having one is - they are superseded overnight. Plasma's are prone to screen burn. I'd rather they break the $160 tv, not the $1600 one and Its an insane amount to try and justify spending on one item that isn't actually vital.

We *do* have a big flat screen HD TV, but it lives in DH's and my bedroom and was bought SOLELY so DH could play his xbox (he was using a regular TV but apparently he could barely play the new console because the graphics need an HD TV).

We too have a problem with fiddle-fingers in this house, so no way would we put the expensive TV in the lounge room - it would end up smashed within a week, I guarantee it. DH and I are racking our brains trying to work out how to stop DD1 getting near it... but, we know there is no solution apart from making her live outside with the dog lol. So the TV stays in our room until she turns 13 lol.

We don't. Our TV goes "crrr....crrrr...crrr" and snowy for about 10 minutes when you turn it on, and then it works ok. I think DH is hoping it will die so i will let him buy a new one. I just let him 'research' all the new flashy ones.

We have a 19" LCD... we bought it with the xbox as PP said, an old TV is hardly 'compatible'. We got it on clearance for $100 less as it was the display TV. A lot of games are made for HDTV only with no updates for them to be visibly sound to be played on an old TV. WE hardly watch TV but the xbox and the Wii gets used a lot. It's in our bedroom and we have a 61cm old one for the lounge that we bought while in share housing and that only cost us $170.

We have an LCD TV but it's not big at all. Our old TV just died one night during Big Brother. When we went to buy new one and all they had int he shops were Plasma and LCD....we didn't want to spend that amount of money but had no choice really.

We have a regular tv and I cant justify replacing a perectly good tv with a $1500 plasma.

We too fave fiddle fingers, We have a silver TV and the on/off button and control panel are taped shut with heavy duty silver tape. Lot less headaches now. we just use the remote (when it can be found lol)

I don't & it doesn't bother me. We can't afford one right now, but DH wants one, & is insistant that he will get one.
I'm happy with the 67cm one we got from Good Guys for $270.

BTW - I would LOVE a tv with buttons out of fingers reach too! We just settle the kids down & DS decides its time to change the channel....over & over again!

I would hate for my kids to grow up watching such a monstrosity - and I could think of a million better things to spend my money on!
Ok, maybe slightly exaggerating ;)

We have one, but it is small and in our lounge. Our larher telly is a regular tv that wont be repkaced until it goes caput.

We don't have one either. We may get one later on down the track sometime but we're fine with what we have now. They aren't broken so there is no need for a new one.

We don't but are considering the purchase presently - the power consumption is something I don't like but it does appear the new LCDs are as good as the plasmas, but with far less power required. We have plasmas at work and when the heating was broken, we all huddled around the plasmas for warmth :rolleyes:

But having said that, our sound no longer works on our current teev and I have a couple of dodgy puter speakers plugged into the dvd player so we can hear!

Hmm, I've got choice magazine and I wouldn't buy either LCD or Plasma!

We don't - we bought a 'large' screen old style TV about 3-4 years ago... it is a 68cm TV and we thought that was a HUGE TV when we bought it... it does what we need it to - is compatible with the wii and PS2 and hooks up to surround sound and digital foxtel

We haven't really talked about a large flat screen - it would only come up if something happened to this TV (touch wood it doesn't) because both DP and I can't justify spending that much $$ on a TV.
