Does anyone know the stats?

I am looking for data etc for an arguement against my Obs reccommendation for induction BEFORE 40 weeks in gestation. I have brought the issue up to my shared care Middies and of course they were supportive of my decision to reject any induction discussions from this point onwards.



However I am looking for stats on what percentage of Inductions result in Emergency C-Sects (any related issues like failure to progress etc etc)

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I am NOT looking for posts saying how an induction worked for OPs and they had hassle free deliveries I am JUST after some real information on the rates of inductions leading to C-sects .... If that makes sense

I don't have any stats, but rather than you looking to justify your refusal could you instead ask your OB to justify his decision? Even if I could find a survey that said 90% of pre 40 week IOL's ended with a CS that would not be relevant to you if your OB has some solid reasoning based on your personal circumstances. If he can't provide that then it will be much easier for you to justify saying thanks but no thanks.

I think I've read 50%, but not certain about that.
Anyway, I agree with Trav - it's up to him to convince you it's necessary.

LOL I know Traveller - I have already said that we won't be inducing but his "insistance" for me to think about it (hewasatad pushy on the subject) was a little more than I was comfortable with.
After chatting with my Middie today I can appreciate why he was the way that he was given where we live, phone reception etc IF we happen to need to pull over because I started pushing, I just cannot shake the feeling that I am going to need to be super firm on the subject and having a solid arguement to back me up helps in the "ok so you've been an Ob for 20years, I will argue against your advice" self esteem area

Last time round my OB told me that the induction success rate (resulted in a vaginal delivery) was around 50%.

Why do they want to have you deliver early?

just be careful googling stats, majority are based on first time mums, not mums who have birthed vaginally before xx

Lime, there was a conversation started by my hubby a few weeks ago about my nervousness of another fast labour. Because of that Ob wasalittle more than insistant that at the 38/39ish week mark that we do an internal andif the cervix was soft and ripening then to proceed with a S&S or the cathedar balloony thing or one of the induction methods that are suitable for VBACers.

We don't live THAT far from the hospital 30 mins easy (20min if we need to) but he said because there is little to no mobile reception along our road (most direct route to the hossy as well) and because we are rural ie not so many passing traffic to stop an help, that it might be better to get bub out sooner rather than wait and potentially risk a roadside delivery.

As far as calling an ambulance, we'd almost be better off risking the ride in or delivering at home because they will call the closest available ambo to be dispatched and they could be coming from anywhere and not necessarily from our closest depo.

NO there are no medical reasons and I am now really worried that I am going to get stuck. I am actually afraid of labour this time because of the discussion Ob and I had ...... I really didn't want to know all the what ifs because there was not one positive one, and of course the closer I get to term the more its spinningaround in my head.

I know a few extra things will be going into my car as soon as I purchase them :-) I wasn't even this scared about DD's labour.

Just a thought Nae... If your OB does the internal at 38 or 39 weeks and says that the cervix is soft and ripe and is recommending induction, could you just stay at a motel or something closer to the hossy from then on in? That would at least eliminate the argument for needing an induction...

Time to stop listening to your ob and focus on centering yourself if you want that VBAC.
Address YOUR fears - don't let him plant more. So what, you birth on the side of the road? Happens every day, in much more remote places I'm not being glib, just (FAK-ing) a bit of perspective. Bring it back to you, your body, your baby and go from there.
PS what do you need an internal for at 38 weeks? Totally unnecessary and unhelpful no matter what the results.

Alarm over jump in induced births

I was just reading your post about why the topic was discussed with your Ob. I had two fast labours (both less then 3 hours), and I know when I was expecting my second bub, the concern over making it to the hospital in time was a big one.

I did a lot of research on birthing without support, and spoke at length with my midwives about what to do in which situation. I also live 30mins from the hospital, but it is a suburbia drive, not a rural one.

When I eventually went into labour, my contractions were all over the place. They were not regular, nor of the same strength, and I really questioned if I was in labour. I decided to ring the midwife, and even though I wasn't convinced bub was coming ( I thought braxton hicks), we agreed to meet at the hospital in 40mins time. Once I had resigned to the idea of leaving for the hospital, my labour quicked into gear with 5 min contractions. We arrived at the hospital 40mins later with 2 min contractions, and bub was born 48 mins later. A total of 3 hours of labour.

If you had a fast labour with your first, beware of being induced. It can produce a very fast and painful labour because your body doesn't have a chance to 'self medicate' against the pain.

What's important is that you make a decision that you are comfortable with so you can relax and let your body go with the flow.
