When did you get you daughters ears pierced?

thanks Glamourcide for your comments, i will ask my GP if i have cysts in my ears, it would be nice to have an end, or an answer to the oozing (that has been going on for two decades without me understanding why).

ZButterfly - i have seen MANY of these threads on another parenting forum, and they developed into trainwrecks REAL fast, so yes, this one has stayed on track, with multiple views, which is great (and unusual for this topic).

Astrid, i agree with the "keeping it simple" approach too. Right now, just getting dressed and having hair done, is enough of an ordeal, i have no desire to ramp up the time it takes to get ready, by adding arguments about which earrings will be worn, where are they? where do they get put/lost when she does sport etc? Getting ready is complicated enough as it is (for us).

My dd was 3yo, she had asked for them, got excited about it all, I explained what would happen and she still wanted it.

She got the guns done at the same time, was little tears, got a Lolly pop and was all good :)

She didn't mind about me cleaning them. A couple of months ago she asked to take them out (after having them for year) and that's fine too.

I don't see what the big fuss is "personal parenting choices, all entitled to have our own opinion"

I might look into those magnet earrings but how easily do they come off, what if she pulls them off and DD2 tries to eat them?

I personally wouldn't advise magnetic earrings (the 'stud' ones) for kids under about 10 years of age, I bought a few when I was in high school because my parents wouldn't let me get my nose pierced and they are *very* weak, fall off easily and could be very easily swallowed. There are probably different ones out there these days but the ones I had were a pain in the butt lol, even an earlobe was too thick for them to properly 'attach' to each other and they fell off without even a nudge! They are very small pieces though, so may not pose a huge choking risk, but I can see little ones swallowing them quite easily ;) The PP who mentioned the little stick-on earrings had a good idea, I see lots of my friends' little girls wearing the stick-ons and they love them :)

Gigi, no worries hun. I had to go into day surgery to have mine removed but if it's just the one cyst, and depending on the size etc, you may be able to find a GP who will excise it under local anaesthetic - they go in through the back of your earlobe so you're not left with visible scarring :) Good luck, I know the feeling and it's not fun! x

My ears were pierced at a very young age, somewhere around 3yo Im guessing. Now the holes are so low in my lobes I dont wear any earrings because they just look weird, too low and not centered on my lobes. I suppose when my ears grew the holes dropped down to the bottom.... not ideal considering I would rather wear earrings NOW in my adult life.

I was 13 as well. I remember waiting all day on my 13th birthday knowing I'd be getting them done. I don't remember ever feeling bad before that about not having them done (although I was probably p!ssed off at the time)

I personally don't like to see little kids with earrings. I was a primary school teacher until DD and saw too many little kids getting them caught or having trouble with sport etc. I think babies with earrings looks tacky but like others have said- that's MY opinion and reflects on me not you. Like a lot of things, my views have softened since becoming a mum. Parents have enough to deal with without us tearing each other down so I say- to each their own. You know better than I do what is best for your family!!

omg I was in my early 20s. It was against our religion to have pierced ears, wear jewellery, strict. then years later Mum got hers done too.. I always wanted them as a teen!

My sister stole me from.school at lunch on my 10th birthday and got me ears done. Mum hit the roof :lol:
I got mum ears done for her 55th birthday I think.
Dd? not sure. She's 20 mth and loves my earings but she would go mental at being held. So i'll wait ;)

for point of interest- there are a lot of accupressure points in your ears. If you pierce one of those you can get some nasty results.

that's interesting to hear BD, i got my ears pierced as a teen, they were fine for several years, but for the last 20 years, i have not been able to wear earrings, my ears go red and sore after 5mins of wearing ANY earrings (even the ones with gold posts), so now i can't wear earrings, but still get pus stuff coming out of them, several times per week. And this has been happening since the early 1990's. Maybe my piercings are in the accupuncture spots. I would LOVE to be able to wear earrings again. *instead of having the three holes in each ear* Seemed like a good idea at the time.

Have you tried wearing titanium? It's possible to develop a sensitivity to metals but titanium is usually ok.

I was 5 years old. DD1 18m & DD2 just the other week 17m she loves them. Doesn't touch them and we've had no issues. DD1 was by a chemist using a gun & DD2 was using a needle by a piercer.
