I told the FS that I had lost 8kg last year and was still trying and he didn't say anything. I'm trying to eat healthy and exercise but when I am PUPO I'm behaving as if I am preg, so exercise at lower intensity and continue to eat healthy but without the same calorie counting - actually tbh I'm not great at calorie counting anyway! I hadn't heard any of that but promise to be careful - thanks for the heads up neda.

myturn,
I had to look up PUPO  that was a new one but sums up what we've been having to go through till we get that positive! If you can mention it next time you see your FS it might be worth it to have that conformation that what you're doing is ok. Or ask if they could refer you to a nutritionist that deals with pregnant women since dietary needs are important.
I have to admit, I always thought I was somewhat healthy until I started to use the myfitnesspal app and realized that my nutritional needs weren't exactly being met and I was eating a lot of empty calories. I'd never bothered to calorie count till I tried getting hubby to use it, he'd eat snakes or ice cream and argue that since it's only 100 calories it's not that bad for you. I'm still trying to get him to understand that his nutritional needs need to come first (I can hear him right now getting into a packet of chips:rolleyes::shakehead:) but at least I have him tracking calories.
I totally forgot to mention in my earlier post that it takes a loss of 3,500 calories (yep!:o) to lose one pound of fat, or 7,716 calories to lose one kilo of fat!
Which is why I've found it very helpful to have someone else doing the math for me when I'm trying to keep track of what I'm eating !

Congrats myturn on the 1.4 kg loss (who cares why you lost it!) and kerbear on not gaining!
Really interesting discussion on the weight loss in preg thing. That info sounds really scary Neda! Guess who will be visiting dr google
I also have this debate going on in my head about it (as I sit at work eating my carrot sticks ). Basically, if a woman is overweight because she eats an unbalanced diet with lots of unhealthy food, is it better to keep doing that when she finds out she's pregnant and stay the same weight OR should she start eating a nutritious, balanced diet (without starving) and lose weight automatically? :dunno:
I've heard that overweight women should gain less weight over their total pregnancy than healthy women but still gain. So maybe we need to work out whatever the right level of food intake for slow weight gain is!! Ha ha - I think I'm getting ahead of myself. Step 1 - get preg!
Also Neda - since downloading that app and using it, I'm too scared to eat anything until I check what it's worth first, ha ha. This is a good thing tho!

:clap:Carrot sticks:clap: ! Great source of Vitamin A!
>.> I actually have a habit of eating too much carrot, pumpkin and sweet potato. I go on kicks of them and end up turning ever so slightly orange. I get bad joint pain from the nightshade veggies (eggplant, chili, tomatoes ect) and sweet potato is one of thoseanti inflammatory foods that can help. That and I like it a lot >.> (<- those are shifty eyes btw). Vitamin A from plant/vegetable sources while pregnant or ttc is fine, it's the vitamin A from pills and meat sources that can cause issues. So skip the extra serving of liver (*shudder*)
Kilos lost is kilos lost! Granted chopping off an arm is not an option, well unless you have three......
Mich8 it's kinda scary isn't it! Having knowledge and making informed decisions about what you put in your mouth!
Here's some random thoughts.
Since we're not dealing with an actual pregnancy yet (*takes a moment to sob uncontrollably*) but we wish we were, to me the most important thing is making sure our (and future baby to be) nutritional needs are met. If we concentrate on that, while counting calories and working on being more active you should get good results. It takes responsibility but I figure if we're honest with ourselves it will work.
Pick an important nutrient, for instance try getting enough potassium in your diet even one day. Now I know it's a bit hard to do since most labels, especially here in australia don't list potassium, but if you're cooking from scratch enter items as "zucchini raw" into my fitness pal.
Since I've got some specific dietary needs I try and make sure I'm meeting my Iron, Protein and calcium as well (potassium seems an impossible goal to achieve !) Pick any of them really. Basically if you're focusing on meeting your dietary needs Without! going into the red (to turn a radio term into a health term) you should be good. You're eating healthy, you're retraining your body (yes it will crave fat and salt for weeks, fight against it because if you give in you get rid of that retraining you did on your brain and have to start over), you're giving yourself the right nutrition that you would need for a pregnancy if you were having to provide for one.
However with the BFP, I'd say talk to someone that knows these things for real! Granted a lot of nutritionists might not, which is why I suggested asking for a referral from a FS. Plenty of reading, both on Dr Google and in books would be a good thing. I wish I remembered which pregnancy book I read it in but in the first trimester you really don't need all that many extra calories, it's more an increase in nutrition. Also a lot of the early weight gain is blood volume.
I'm fairly certain that healthy eating and exercise while pregnant even if it leads to some weight loss is ok since you're still giving you and rugrat to be the proper nutritional needs. It's the crash dieting that is bad for you, bad for baby, bad period since it screws with your metabolism and isn't sustainable long term.
These days I know it's hard to fix meals from scratch, real scratch not dumping a jar of sauce on some main ingredients scratch, but every step you can take in that direction can help. That way you know exactly what's going into your body. If you have freezer space get a few lunch size containers and make up your own meals on weekends. They're also pretty handy for days when you're just too busy/tired to cook.
Last night I had ballet, it wasn't as hard as last week, I guess I lost a lot of muscle strength over the break! I totally misread my calories remaining and sat down afterwards to half an avocado and a sweet potato and feta mini tart (my vit A was a little low). Came in at 10 remaining (thought I had300 remaining *lol*). It's so easy to go over :( even when you're trying to do it right! I know I need more activity in my days, it's raining again today though and hubby has gone and injured his ankle at tournament training over the weekend so getting him to go on walks with me is near impossible (Yes I know I'm old enough to go by myself :P). Hopefully an extra class over the weekend if I'm up for it and not too
grumpy since AF is on the way. I'm 6 DPO right now, and stressing over the fact that I'm pretty sure we're going to go whole hog and do IVF instead of IUI. :wall:
-
Yay also to the carrot sticks, it do comes down to being organized. I really need to go back to using my app I think and doing some exercise, maybe it will take my mind off the ivf.
So happy for everyone who is focused and doing well it is all worth it, but sometimes we have to revisit why we are doing it that's for sure.

Kerbear - huge  I've been stalking the other thread (because I will probably be "graduating" to IVF soon) and I'm so sorry it hasn't all gone completely smoothly so far. It sounds like there's still hope tho :crossfingers: Maybe preparing healthy food and counting nutrients/ calories might be a positive distraction for you during all this (as long as it doesn't stress you out!). I think its nice to have some small healthy eating/ exercise/ weight loss goals and victories to celebrate on the way to the ultimate baby victory!
Neda - You are so good! I'm never going to do much cooking from scratch! Cooking at all is an achievement for me  I have to admit, I never meet the daily goals on the app for calcium, vitamins etc and am usually over on sugar (mainly from fruit tho). In any of your books, has anyone actually written out a week of food intake that you can lose weight on but all your nutrient needs are met? Would it be like the chimpanzee diet? (saw that on tv!). I could never stick to such a thing but it would be interesting to see :)
Hi myturn - just wondering - have you noticed the "stabbing" drugs have any effect on weight?
Today was not a healthy day for me :( I was still within my calorie allowance because I exercised but it was empty calories - too much snacking today. Working from home is a trap - back into the office for the rest of the week for me!
-
haven't really noticed the drugs affecting my weight, but having said that - I did lose a bit the month I had the break. I didn't exercise as intensely when I was doing the drugs - my personal trainer said it was best to keep it light and she always asks where I'm at in a cycle so she knows if I'm stabbing or not :)
but I do wonder if I lost the extra after the cycle just because of the stress on my body?
not doing much at the moment to be honest - I'm just plodding along - trying to remind myself to make good choices, and if I want treats allowing myself to have them - if I really want them :)
I weighed myself this morning at .1g higher than sunday so I figure I'm basically at the same weight... so when I get back to work tomorrow I will be back in a routine of gym straight away on the way home and maybe that will help
sorry you will probably be graduating to our thread soon Mich - but if you have to be there, then it's a great bunch of people to be with.
sounds like you are on the ball Neda - I agree with you though - for me it is more about being healthy, and hopefully I will lose weight at the same time, but really it's more about getting into a lifestyle that works and is sensible for when I am UTD.
hi to everyone else.... hope you are all tracking okay. xxx
-
Hey myturn - get walking!! (Yes I've been stalking, ha ha )
Smarties hey? - I completely understand. Yesterday I had a weakness for chocolate too but back on track today :)

You crack me up myturn lmao
-
ps.... clear your inbox kerbear!!

Mich8- going to try and shift my focus a bit to the weight, cause I know I have let it slip, was so good before Christmas. Sorry to hear you might be joining us in the other thread but as myturn said they are a wonderful group of ladies to go through it with.
I count kj not calories and I know it might sound dumb but I know there is so many ways to count everything, are kj linked to calories? I find kj easy cause it is written in the packets and don't have to count anything.
I also have to admit I have another aweful habit that I have been struggling with which I feel so guilty about but have tried everything to give up and that is smoking which is an aweful thing to be doing while trying to have a baby but I have tried patches and the tablets and it hasn't worked. Mum is a doctor and brought it up again the other day again. I want to try to give up but am scared to do it while doing ivf as I am scared it will stress my body and make it harder.
Unfortunately we got told at the end of last year we didn't have time to wait for ivf so it has put a halt to patches as they can't prove either way if they are bad. I also prioritized weight loss as most important and I know I eat more when u try to give up smoking. DH smokes to which makes it hard.
Please don't judge as it has taken a lot for me to admit this on here but was wondering if anyone else was or is a smoker and has struggled with it.
:-( ashamed :-(
-
you can only do what you can.... so while I agree with your mum... give em up! you need to do what is right for you when the time is right...
and I fully believe you can and will when you are ready!
-
Thanks myturn, I feel like I should be doing everything perfect and right to give it the best chance and I am trying, I have just set myself a goal to try to achieve it, see how I go :-)
-
yay! I went for a walk! DH went with me.......
okay we got a mcd's mcflurry half way..... but it was still a walk to get there.... 45 minutes all together... reasonable speed....
small things okay ;)
-
Myturn, I emptied my inbox, could you not get a message through? I only had 4 in there.
-
it just worked that time :)
-
Yeah just got it, sent one back :-)
