Long Term TTC & Assisted Conception - July/August 09

Hi Ladies,

Sorry but I'm going to rant - and hopefully get some answers too. I had my BT today and after 17 days on syneral my hormones are not suppressed enough for starting FSH and seem to be quite far off where they're meant to be LH=5.5 (I don't know much and as the results were over the phone and i rang from work I couldn't get much detail). All I know is they want me to double the syneral dose and continue for another week. The nurse said it's rare but it happens that syneral doesn't work for some people so I am a bit annoyed at her not allowing me return sooner to check if it's working or not as the clinic will only start stims on a Thursday to fit the doctors schedule for EPU (do not recommend this FS and would definitely have gone with another that I looked into had they been able to fit me in on the short window where I'm not travelling for work). Anyway it looks like I'll be another week on these drugs that make me feel great, not, and then find out if they are even working. Has anyone else had any experience of this?

Mellissal, on another note; you may not be the only one in the same position. As I said above I travel a lot with work and when I started clomid cycles I had to have some reason to explain to my boss why my travel was so much less flexible so I ended up telling him what was happening and it turned out he and his wife are in the same position - though different reasons and treatments he was completely understanding. I ended up being really glad I told him because he has been completely flexible and supportive since (he was a good boss to begin with anyway). If you tell people you work with it may actually help. Though I can see why the hesitation; especially with where you are working. GL

I need to rant. I'm so upset.

I took an IVF receipt to Medicare this morning, for a rebate. The clerk was snooty, she was obviously having a bad day. But after she'd finished my transaction, she picked up my Medicare card and said "you should put DH on your card, so he can join you on the Safety Net." I said "yeah, I will get around to that." She then said, "And put The Baby on it too."

Now, she doesn't know I'm in the middle of the TWW, or that referring to The Baby is quite insensitive, but WTF? Is it not enough to have my Mum expecting babies from me, now Medicare expects it as well? Why do people assume that IVF has worked, or will work? I was in tears afterwards. Of course, I know she didn't mean anything by it, but hearing her refer to The Baby really threw me.

Okay, rant over. I'll go back to the TWW and be ultra-sensitive for another week.

Persephone, sorry to hear you had to deal with that. It would have upset me too. Especially during the 2ww! FYI, I have DH added to my Safety Net but we have separate cards with different numbers. I did it online before IVF#1. Not that DH racks up many medical expenses... :rolleyes:

Persephone - I'm sorry for your Medicare experience. As if it's not an insult enough to have to spend half your day queuing there. You'd think she would be more sensitive? What would she say to people with terminal illnesses? Rude and insensitive and you have every right to be upset.

I went with DH yesterday to look at new cars. More tyre-kicking than anything but we both drive small inner-city cars and hope that if all goes well with IVF we may soon need to upgrade. No harm in positive thinking, right? DH had been in the day before and mentioned to the salesman that we were "thinking of starting a family".

So we were being shown through the vehicle and another salesman jumps in (total smarmy, scarfed-ip, tosser!). The first guy had been great and the new guy starts going into overkill and really putting the hard word on us. He says "In your condition[, you really need a big vehicle"

What condition might that be? I was so irritated that even if he had have offered us the best deal out there, I would not have bought a car from him.

These people are presumptuous and can't possibly understand what we are going through (that's not to say there aren't wonderful, caring and understanding people out there).

Then in afternoon, DH and I went to accountant to do tax. When it came to the Medical Expenses part, he asked if we had any. I said "Yes" and he asked what they were for. I explained that I had knee surgery, lap & hyst and IVF costs. He went on to tell me how his 1st wife had IVF with no success and 2nd wife had ectopic and lost a tube and how he'd had a client in the day before, same age as me who had already spent $17K on IVF with no success. Such positive stories to be sharing!!!!!!:rolleyes::

Seriously, you are not being ultrasensitive and you are in the TWW which must be so stressful and thought consuming at times. :hug:

Persephone1- your a lot stronger than me, I would have jumped over the counter and slapped her one! Stupid :angry:

I hope you put in a complaint, thats really rude. You would think you were taking the money from their pocket - the way some of those medicare people react!

When we went in with our first bill (5K) they were all in a fluster.. we realised we dont get the cash back, it goes into our account, it took them a while to process it - we were at the counter for a good 15 min.

AFM - nothing much, I queried why I cant do back to back cycles, my FS wont do them cause the result is never as good - the follies don't develop as much. I see a new FS on Tuesday, and then go back in about 20days for my 1st ultrasound before the new cycle. We have hit up the MIL & FIL to pay for this round of IVF - we have funds, but they offered to help out (thank god :pray:) for a while - takes a bit of pressure off!

Seph and Taureen - so sorry you've had to go through that stuff, some people are just so insensitive. Those people don't sound very nice. You poor things x.

AFM - on Puregon injections and Synarel still and have BT and U/S next Thurs/Fri to determine when EPU will be. Im getting quite excited but a little nervous also. We have little furbabies at home too which is fun - our two dogs have had a litter of 5 pure-bred Kelpies.

Jasminstar - I know how you feel about synarel. On my first IVF cycle and the down reg blood test, my levels were low enough to start FSH injections, and it was quite a low level (below 50 I think) so the nurse said the synarel must have been working really well. So I started the FSH injections and got to two days before my EPU date when they did another blood test to check hormone levels. They called me with the bad news that based on my hormone levels, I'd already started ovulating early. So my cycle was cancelled two days before EPU. The explanation was that obviously my body didn't respond to synarel and it didn't do what it was suppose to do (ie. suppress ovulation). I was shattered as you can imagine. Not long after that, I ended up getting a blood test on day 1 of my next cycle, and my E2 levels were really low again. So I think that for the cycle previously when they did my down reg blood test and I had a really low E2 level, that it was because of my body's own natural levels. And for all I know, synarel didn't work from the start, but I had to get the point I did (ie. cancelled cycle because of early ovulation) for them to realise this. They are such hard lessons that we have to learn going through IVF. I really wish it was easier for us all. I hope the next week goes well and you can get a start on your FSH injections soon.

Seph - OMG, I can't believe that Medicare woman. People are so insensitive sometimes. A couple of times when I've gone to the chemist to buy Elevit, ladies will come up and ask if I need assistance or need advice on taking Elevit. Then they ask when I'm due!!! It really bugs me that I then have to say that I'm not pregnant yet. It's so none of their business.

Krikkit - my FS is the same re back-to-back cycles. For stim cycles, they won't do them back-to-back and they say the same reason as yours does - that you won't get as good a response. As hard as it is, it's probably just best to wait out a natural cycle in between stim cycles (that's where I am now - natural cycle). I definitely plan on finding out about back-to-back cycles if they're FET's, or if it's a FET to a stim. Good luck with everything.

Okay, I thought maybe I was over-reacting, but now that I've read your replies I realized that I'm not. So I decided to make an online complaint. I just said that the clerk made an assumption and that her comment upset me. I suggested she be more tactful in the future.

good move Seph......I get annoyed with people who say the incorrect thing and are never actually told that they may be offensive! I had a little word with my grandmother the other day and told her that telling me that for her to fall preganant all that my grandfather had to do was hang his pants up behind the door, was just something that I didn't need to hear!!!!

AFM-AF arrived yesterday, today I have been booked to have US and the dreaded Dilapan insertion, normally this is done on the third or fourth day of the cycle to reduce discomfort but unfortunately there is nobody at the clinic to do this over the weekend and hence I have no option but to have it today.

Seph - you would think that dealing with people who are obviously claiming for bills for PERSONAL medical expenses, part of the staff's training should be to be more tactful (ie butt out of peoples' personal business and make no comment at all) But I suppose, you can't always teach people tact. I am sorry that you had to deal with such a moron at such a nerve-wracking time in your cycle.

One thing that I have learned from this whole process is that it is either a really taboo subject and people, even close friends get really uncomfortable talking about it, or they go the polar opposite and want to tell you every negative story re TTC that they have ever heard (as in your case Taurean78)

Although I haven?t had any too bad encounters, I was upset that SIL asked how it was going last week and I told her I had EPU and ET coming up and the response was ?Oh that?s nice? ? like I was going for a bl#$dy pedicure or something. Have spoken to her several times since and she has not asked once how it all went, so I didn?t bring it up.

AFM ? on day 6 of the dreaded 2WW (18 days actually). Only 12 days to go till BT (hopefully). Have had a tiny amount of spotting and a fair bit of cramping, but just hoping for the best and trying to keep my mind occupied.

Is that what happened to you when it didn't work the first time or did they just increase the dose like they have with me? Tantee, I've fallen a bit behind you now in schedule with my lack of reaction to the syneral - I'm on double dose now though so by next Thursday I'll be 24 days on it with a week of that doubled up so should be working by then.

AFM: I've calmed down a lot since yesterday. Rang my Mum for over an hour last night and got a lot out of my system - she said she suspected it was too good to be true when I had told her my side effects weren't too bad. Times like this I really wish my family were in Australia (other than DH of course) cos they're great at calming me down - and for hugs :lol: Anyway here's hoping things get back in line for next week. :crossfingers:

Please bear with me I am going to rant.I need to get this out of my system.

I had gone for my appointment today to have a scan, BTand the Dialapan insertion before starting the gonodotropin injections.
The doctor who scanned me today was the same person who had done a HyCosy scan a month ago and a month ago she had noticed some abnormality in the uterus(septum in the cavity) and she had discussed this with her senior collegue but she did not bother to inform me about this. The clinic made me have all the down reg. pills and medications and today when I went there for my appointment the same doctor after reading my notes realised this .

She did not bother to apologise for not letting me know about this and making me take all the medications unnecessarily instead she just left me lying on the table with my legs on the stirups only to return half an hour later to say "I am sorry you cannot proceed with this cycle my senior college will talk to you about this, now you can dress up and go BYE BYE".

This senior doctor says "Sorry we cannot proceed without sorting this, I know it is nuisance to have all those injections and have no treatment but I can assure you no harm is done".
I realise that IVF treatment can be called off at various stages due to biological unpredictability, but we have been subjected to unnecessary anguish just because of a communication error.
I need to have a repeat Hysteroscopy and get this surgically corrected before we proceed.When I googled it I found out that it is a congenital issue.
Now what I don't understand is I have had a HSG,a Hysteroscopy, a laporoscopy in the past year and numerous other internal scans in the 8 years that we are TTC and none of them picked this septum issue.
Another 3-4 months wasted given the way the system works here.

Thank you for thinking about me.
Dilapan is a rod that is placed inside the cervix( if it is too tight )to dialate it a bit so that access on the day of embryo transfer is easier. This rod is left in place for 4 hours and then removed afterwards.Guess dilapan has to wait for a while now.

Vira, I have just read your post and I am in disbelief. What a complete balls up. I can't believe your doctor did not inform you of what she had found (A) and (B) was not completely apologetic and mortified at her mistake. To make you go so far into the cycle and forget that you had a condition that would not allow you to proceed is insane. I have to say your rant is a lot calmer than mine would have been!!! You are one strong person that's for sure. The only thing I can say is that if they haven't spotted this in the 8 years you've been TTC then possibly once it's rectified you'll be on your way to success :crossfingers: You have my sincere empathy and very best wishes for success :pray:

What has happened to you is totally unacceptable and all the more irritating because you could have found out about it much earlier than this.

Perhaps this is a really positive way you can look at this? I don't want to sound patronising but sometimes I find it helps to write a letter outlining all of your grievances. Be as forthright as you want and then print it off and tear it up! It is more therapeutic than I ever knew.

OMG Vira! I can't belive the incompetence of some of these people. I mean, I know they are the experts and we go to them for help... but this is just a HUGE slip up. I'm so sorry for you. I can sympathise with the "how come they havn't picked it up on earlier tests" bit. I asked my FS to consider endo four years ago (and several times since) and he said, oh no you dont' have any symptoms... so I never had a lap done. DH and I stopped treatment for a while cos I just wasn't in the right headspace. I changed to a new clinic and the new FS said same thing... no endo symptoms. Fortuntately on the US he booked for us it showed a small cyst so they went in, and whamo! it was all over my left hand side. I was mad for a bit because it's been four years of TTC... but now I'm just pleased it has finally been sorted. Fingers crossed for you!!

I'm sorry that you went through that, I think you have a right to rant and complain. My DH was at the Eye & Ear hospital this morning for an examination and the doctor examining him brought in another doctor and they had a full discussion in front of us as if we weren't even in the room. Then one of them said "That's all done, you can go now." Way to go on the communication and bedside manner!

Oh Vira, I am so sorry that you had to go through with that. I really ,really feel for you and can't imagine the anger and frustration you must be feeling. It is so hard to gear yourself up for a cycle and to have to deal with such a disappointment due to someone else's incompetance is unimaginable. Like you said, unforseen circumstances can arise, but this is their error and to not even show the slightest sign of empathy ......%@$#

Having said that, the discovery may get you one step closer to your dream. You WILL get there.

Hi Jasminstar - after my cancelled cycle involving synarel, my FS suggested I do a completely different protocol, so I did an antagonist cycle which didn't involve synarel at all. It's a much quicker cycle where they just wait for AF to arrive naturally, then start FSH injections on day 3. I only did injections for about 8 days and had EPU on CD12. As far as I'm concerned, I don't ever want to do synarel again, because I would just be too worried that the same thing will happen. And now that I've done a different protocol that worked better (at least in terms of getting to EPU and ET), then I don't want to go back to synarel.

I am waiting for my FS to call me and say what the next move is going to be.I had imagined myslef to be a lot stronger than I am and this incident made me realise I am not, I had to struggle a lot the other day not to break down into tears in the tube train on my way home.
I am lot calmer now and and really admire the spirit of all you long term ttc ladies here and wish you all the best.
Taureen78-I agree with you 100% on how therapeutic it is to write down all your grievances and how much better you feel afterwards.

I agree about writing a letter, my step-mum is a counsellor ( a very good one) and gets people to do that all the time - it helped me too with some issues.

Hi ladies - well, much to my dismay, i'm back in this thread, after having a recent miscarriage. It was so exciting to hear that we finally had a BFP, we were on a high for a few days, then you realise its still such a long road ahead. We were just wanting to hear the little h/beat at our 6 week scan, but it wasn't to be.
May not be around too often, but will pop in from time to time to see how everyone else is doing. Our next IVF clinic will be in October, so will be going through another egg collection cycle then, and hopefully end up with more to freeze than last time.
Not alot else to say, i'm feeling a bit *crap*, but wishing everyone the best.

Theresep - I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I can't even imagine how you are feeling right now. My heart and thoughts go out to you at this very difficult time.

AFM - I really need some moral support. I got an email this morning from a very good friend of mine informing me that she is 12 weeks pregnant and due at the end of January. As soon as I read the email, I almost burst into tears. I had to leave the office and go for a walk otherwise I would have been crying at work and I didn't want that (no-one at work knows we're TTC). I have no idea how I am supposed to be happy for my friend, when all I can think of is the fact that I'm not pregnant yet, and we've been trying for nearly a year and a half. My friend had been off the pill for a month (maybe two months), and she fell pregnant straight away. She also doesn't know that we're TTC. I feel like no-one understands what I'm going through except you girls. I think that almost EVERYONE I know who has kids or who is pregnant, fell pregnant either accidentally or straight away when they started TTC.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!!!! Why can't I get pregnant.

So sorry for the ranting and raving, but I just feel like I can't talk to anyone about this. I sent my husband the email from my friend (we work in the same office), and he came looking for me because he knew I'd be upset about it. He's such a sweetie.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. I was hoping to get some support from you girls, because my other friends just wouldn't understand.

Hi ladies. Sorry, I'm a bit out of the loop... There's always so much going on and I find it hard to follow.

Just a quick question: I know it's normal to O late after an IVF cycle, but is it normal to have a shortened LP. I'm only 11dpo but I feel like AF is knocking on the door. I think it's probably just the IVF last cycle messing me up (normally have a 14 day LP), but wanted to see what others think?

wishes - there is nothing wrong with you. What you are feeling are the normal feelings most of us get when we hear the news of the pregnancy of someone close to us when we haven't experienced the same success.
I remember once a colleague of mine (who has been TTC + 18 months and is about to embark on IVF) said upon the birth of her sister's 1st baby that the moment her envy turned to jealousy or spite, that is when she would make contact with a counsellor. IMO it is normal to feel a bit green and to wonder, "Why not me?".

Yesterday I had lunch with 2 friends and their babies. Conversation turned to the topic of our 4 pregnant friends and then my friend said," Oh.. and Jane is pregnant again". Well it was my turn to think, "Hey? No fair!". This is her second pregnancy and her husband chronically abuses marijuana. How is it that a) they can fall pregnant b) have healthy children......

Your husband sounds like a sweetheart and I am glad you have his support so close to hand.

Emerald Star - Hope you aren't in any discomfort after EPU. The way I look at it is - you got eggs out! That's a result - and four have fertilised - another result! Maybe not as good as you had hoped for but it is a result nonetheless. :crossfingers: for at least 1 good, strong and resilient emby for you.

Theresp - I'm so sorry for your loss. We are here for you if you need.

Wishes - I can sooo relate to that! DH and I got married 4 1/2 years ago (the first of both our brothers and sisters) and since then both our brothers have married and had not one but TWO children each. They know that we have been TTC since we got married and have been reasonable sensitive, but even so it doesn't help. My SIL fell pg twice by accident, blah blah blah. It is very difficult to watch loved ones go through the pregnancy, but at the end of the day... they're very lucky and it's great for them. One of my girlfriends got pg on her first try one month after stopping OCP and has a DS 3 1/2years old. She knew we wereTTC and has been really supportive and encouraging for the last 4 years. How do you think your friend would react if you told her you are TTC? Incidently another of my girlfriends who has just married last year and is nowhere near thinking about having kids had a really diffierent reaction when I told her we were starting IVF. She forgot we were on Skype and I could see her expression. She cringed and she said she was so sorry for me, not realising that I was really excited that we'd made the decision to go ahead with IVF. She felt really awkward and totally killed our conversation. Telling people is a hard decision to make cos once it's out there you can't take it back. Good luck.

Emeraldstar - I'll be thinking of you this week. Hope all four make it through.

AFM - I start Lucrin injections tomorrow for the first time and am very excited about it. DH is away, so I have to do it all by myself, no back up in case it all goes wrong. Fingers crossed.

About friends and pregnancies, i am the only one in my large family, cousins and friends that DOES NOT have any kids......everytime they see me its like" when are you gonna have one"? and they look at me suspiciously, like having conceiving problems is a really bad disease.....not that they know that i am trying IVF and that i do have conceiving problems, but its just awful how they make you think something bad of yourself for not being able to fall pregnant at a drop of a hat...i have only told 2 of my bestest friends and my mum( god bless her ) about IVF and apart from you BB friends, thay will sit and listen to me vent for hours and be so supportive.

Since we have been married for 8 years, by now it is common knowledge that we are TTC and it is not happening. I think friends and relatives don't have a clue how to deal with us.Many share their good news as they would with anybody else and even though I feel sad initially I recover soon and be happy for them.But it is those people who try to hide it from me that hurt me a lot.One TTC friend who used to call me everyday and share all trivial information suddenly did'nt know what to do when she got pregnant ,her phone calls became rarer and after a couple of months she called up to say that she had been pregnant for a while and did'nt know about it and came to know only that day and then cut me off until she had her baby. Atleast we have all these wonderful ladies to support us.

Hi Ladies,

Yes still here - just been a little busy and trying to get on top of everything since I returned home. Unfortunately my treatment has been delayed a week. I am a little peeved but it can't be helped.... just bad timing. We had a few family issues to sort out and had to stay a little longer which meant I missed my BT on Fri. I didn't think it would be a big deal but the clinic didn't want me to start my injections a day late when I returned. I ended up having my BT yesterday and I have down regulated. I have to continue on the synarel this week and will start injections on Friday so I am now looking at EPU on 7th August. I feel like I am sitting in the slow lane and getting no where fast!!

Theresep - sorry to hear about your mc and the delay till you can start again. I hope you are felling better soon and FX that next time will be the one that stays for keeps. x

Wishes - I fell your pain also, it is a common theme for us girls. I am used to being the only childless couple amongst our friends and family and have shed many tears at the news of others BFPs. Not that I am unhappy for them but I just really though I would be having children well before the even started TTC. To be honest I think I am happier when a BFP is achieved by one of my LTTTC buddies. I know they truly understand the longing and heartache that comes with this journey.

Emerald star - glad to hear the EPU went well and hope you are not in too much discomfort. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I really hope you are one of the really lucky 1st timers.

Loops - hope you are doing well.

Daisie - GL with the injections tomorrow. I am sure you will be fine with out DH just keep the goal in sight and think it will bring you one step closer!

Jasminstar - feeling your frustrations re synarel and working around the FS. While it is not my FS fault - me being 1 day late puts me back a week to fit in with the FS schedule.

Thanks for the support girls. At least I know that I'm not the only one out there feeling like this. I completely relate to mitf when she said she feels happier for LTTTC girls getting BFP's. Again, I'm not sure if this is a normal feeling, but I just feel that those girls who get pregnant so easily cannot possibly grasp the concept of how lucky they are, simply because it happened so easily for them. And usually, it is those exact same girls where it doesn't even seem to enter their mind that it's not that easy for everyone, and they find it completely acceptable to continually ask you when you're going to have a baby. This seems to be based on the assumption that it was easy for them, so it must be easy for everyone. For us LT'ers, I feel like we appreciate it more, because like anything, if you work so hard for something, you appreciate it more when you get it.

I think one of the things that really bugs the most, is the complete cluelessness of the fertile people who have no idea what we're going through. But how could they? I think you cannot possibly know what us LTTTC'ers are going through, unless you have gone through it yourself. Sometimes I feel like screaming to everyone that yes we are TTC, but no it hasn't happened yet and yes we going through IVF, so just leave us alone and stop asking questions. I'm not sure how I'd feel about telling people what we're going through, because I don't know if I could handle the "pity" looks.

Daisie - good luck with the injections. I know you'll be fine. I decided to do my own so as not to rely on DH and to prevent the nagging of "When are you coming home to do my shot?". I do it in my stomach (I always knew my fat rolls would come in use one day :lol:). It is an exciting time because things are finally happening.

Mitf - good to see you back. I hope things went as well as they possibly could. Sorry to hear that they have put you a week back - that's so irritating when you have things planned in your head to be happening at a certain time but unfortunately is the nature of the beast. In good news, we start our FSH on the same day so will be going down the same path at the same time.

ATM - I went for the first BT this morning and to pick up Puregon & Trigger inj. Just had a call back from the nurses to say that it's all looking good and provided AF comes by Fri, I can start my FSH injections then too. Another small bit of progress :D

I am in my last week of school hols now so must warn that by next week my posts will cut back a bit. The support I am getting from this website is amazing and I really feel part of a community (albeit a faceless one!).

Wishes - you have articulated my thoughts perfectly (I could swear you read my mind). I don't think you have anything to worry about, these feelings are perfectly normal. We all have our good and bad weeks, and some times it's just good to have a rant!. FX that we will all achieve our BFP's soon.

Taurean - I do my own shots too, the though of DH jabbing me is not appealing. And yes those lovely rolls do come in handy! I find if I pinch it just below it doesn't hurt as much. Great news that we are doing our Puregon shots from the same day. My dose has tripled from my IUI's so I will be interested to see how differently it affects me. Do you know the date for your EPU?

No idea of date of EPU. I go in for another blood test on Monday and they'll monitor me from there. My clinic can seem a bit blase about those things because they are so busy but I feel confident with them. I am on 150 units of Puregon and am a bit worried about how I am going to handle it. But having said that, I have been absolutely fine on the Lucrin and all I have noticed is a dry mouth sensation.

I had to laugh when I read the product info for Puregon:
"Puregon contains the active ingredient, follitropin beta rch. This is produced by a Chinese hamster ovary cell line transfected with the human FSH subunit genes"

OK....WTF? Chinese hamster ovary cells?!?! :o
