Well, I'm relieved I'm not the only one with this thing. I am onto my 3rd pregnancy and have had pain since about week 8!! As soon as those hormones kicked in I was doomed. No-one has really officially diagnosed me with Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction but the various specialists I have seen say it sounds like it is that. (specialists I have found myself, no thanks to any GP's or obstetricians I have seen!! I feel like they couldn't give a toss or though I was being a hypocondriac). My pain threshold is very high so it's kind of frustrating not getting any real advice.
I knew I had it again straight away. I got it with my second child about week 20 but nothing with my first. The 36 hour labor with my 1st probably contributed - that and the fact I did gymnastics for 12 years which has ruined my back and hips apparently.
After not taking care of myself during my second and putting everyone else first, I decided I would really try to get my body relaxed so that this labor wouldn't be so awful and the pain would hopefully subside quicker after birth. After the second baby, I still couldn't lunge on one leg without some degree of pain - and that was 5 years ago now.
I have been seeing a fantastic myotherapist who was recommended to me by a friend and she specialises in pregnancy related problems. She has completely relieved my pain with regards to muscles and ligament strain and used these fantastic needle things that went deep into my hip muscles (basically my butt) because they were so tight. After a day or two I was a different person. She fixed my hips and lower back. My underlying problem is that my pelvis is all out and I am incredible pain underneath and at the front, which a physio, osteo or myotherapist really cant do much for. She has refered me to a specialist chiropractor who only treats pregnant women and babies. There is no cracking, or quick manipulation (of which I am terrified) and she is located in Hawthorn. She is on holidays at the moment but am booking in for 2 weeks time. I will let you know how she goes. She supposedly jently manipulates the pelvis so that the pubic bone and hips aligne themselves. Mine is out as one hip seems slightly higher than the other and so wearing a brace only increases the pain because technically its pushing the pubic bone together but they aren't aligned, so they are rubbing. This causes excruciating stabbing pains down my legs. So, there goes the brace I bought!
I am at the point where I cant stand on one leg to get pants on and sleeping is not working as lying on my side causes agony. It's definately my bones or the ligaments attached to it underneath, as about 2 months ago, I could feel it was alot of muscles and ligaments that were straining with the dysfunction. Again, my myotherapist did the trick. She's in Hawthorn too. I can pass details on if anyone needs it. She really knows her stuff. And she's not one of these therapists who keeps telling you to come back week after week. If she feels as though she's fixed it, she tells you and you can really feel it. She gives suggestions and recomendations and refers you onto someone else if your issues are not something she can fix ie-the chiro. I am a real sceptic when it comes to therapists as I have seen many and been disappointed. I was in pain for a day after seeing her, but after that, my muscles and ligaments really loosened up. It took about 3 sessions to really stretch out the ligaments and muscles. I only see her now every 2 weeks to keep them loose as everyday chores can put a strain on them and I can physically feel them tighten. I will try anything for a better labor this time.
Has anyone else found the public system disregard this pubis dysfunction when it is mentioned? I feel like no-one is taking me seriously and I'm worried that labor could permanently damage my pelvis this 3rd time round. The private system would have booked me in already for a c-section, but I'm not necessarily wanting that. It doesn't help when you have to explain everything all over again every visit because it's a different obst every time!!
Does anyone else have major swelling as well? I feel like my baby is about to fall out onto the floor! I've seen a women's physio about it too and she can't really explain it as my core strength (from all the gym) and my pelvic floor are really strong. That sensation was overpowering but now the pelvis problem seems to have overtaken that issue. Man!!! What us women put up with!
I am definately not having any more children after this one. This pregnancy has been a very painful one - and I have 10 weeks to go.
Does crutches help?? I am going to the Pink Concert in August and have no idea how I'm going to walk up those steps let alone walk from the car!
What painkillers are safe? Has anyone had panadeine or panadeine forte?? I hear it was safe but am still nervous taking it.
Good luck girls.
PS - sorry this post is so long!!!
