So i got a letter from the hospital on the 28th June - 20 days AFTER my initial referral was sent, the one they told me they didn't get 3 times BUT now their letter say's they received my letter on the 8th June... hmm funny thats the day it was orginially sent
Anyway it's now the 26th June and i still haven't heard so i am on hold, i know there are long waits for appts and thats not a big deal but this pain is really starting to annoy me.
In the original letter there is no time frame on an appt just a note "we will send you a letter once an appt is available"

Am on hold now, seeing if i can atleast get an update.

might be worth doing a private clinic appointment babe - the public ones are a loooooooooooong wait time
i'm seeing him in fitzroy - just changed my appointment to september 27th (quite literally, i just hung up from the private clinic!)

if you're trying to go public, you could be on the wait list quite a while (i was referred initially to public clinic - i rang them up for some sort of time frame and was told, given it's a chronic problem, not acute, i could be waiting up to two years or more before i even got a consultation)

We don't have private health so going to see him somewhere else is probably out of the question

I called and checked - i have been put on the non-urgent list which is 5 folders full and still organising appointments for referrals issied in JANUARY 2011
There are some days i can barely pick up the girls, i don't want to take pain meds so i have been putting up with the pain but soon i might have to go back to the GP and find something suitable to take to keep the pain at bay.

Might try the initial surgeon again and see if he can write another referral advising of the pain etc but i don't think it will do me any good

A private appt with the surgeon might not be that expensive (maybe couple hundred?), if you are really in a bad way it might be worth it to find out what they can do, and you might be able to get on the surgery list quicker. Def ring up and find out how much it would be.

the initial appt/consult is 130 or 140 (can't recall which - have another appt same week and there is 10 difference in price) - you'll get some of that back from medicare
yes, you may not have PHI, but getting the consult and working out what needs to happen will be worth it. the specialist himself may deem it more urgent and nudge you up the list from non-urgent to a higher category.
if you DO have to go private for surgery, you'll have out of pocket costs but it will likely be day surgery, and you get back some of the fees from medicare as well (i've paid to have surgery in private hospital and got some of the fees back from medicare - can't recall the exact details, but i know i was expecting zip and got a decent amount back). this is what we will have to do seeing we no longer have PHI either - but it's worth it, IMO, to not wait two years or so for a consult

Can you PM me his rooms number hun and see if i can maybe get in there for the initial consult?
I don't think i could afford this surgery under private without cover - last time i went to see someone about it they said surgery privately would cost close to $5000 (having screws etc inserted) so if it's anything like what they initially wanted to do then i'd not want that bill
Will contact the surgeon who referred me too and see if there is anything else he can do.

Have an appt with his private rooms on the 20th Sept, i recently whacked my wrist with our very heavy metal letterbox cover and it's either bruised or displaced as it KILLS - i can barely lift DD2 and i have to sleep with it in a certain position.

Worst thing is even once i see him IF i decide to go public for surgery i don't just go on the surgery wait list i go back on the appt wait list and then surgery wait list and i highly doubt we can afford private surgery costs
I will however ask for a breakdown of costs and any rebates we would get but i highly doubt we will consider that as an option... he may however have a quick fix solution while i am back on the wait list for public

Bugger! Maybe he can write a letter though? Can't hurt to ask. Or maybe ask about private surgeon in a public hospital? Not sure if you have to pay anaesthetics then or if you can put that on Medicare? But ask for all options.

can you afford to get singles hospital cover for yourself? it's a pre-existing condition so you'd liekly have a 12 month wait before you can access it, but if the public hospital wait is as crazy long as it sounded when i called about it, it might be the quicker option (and cheaper than doing all private)

Haven't looked at cover for that, and it's not something we really wanted to get IYKWIM, if we did it would be family cover & not sure it's something we could afford.

The back log is crazy, close to a yr 1/2 just for the original consultation.
