Toilet Training General Chatter

They have the kids toilets ZF. We have a potty and she was using it fine until a few weeks ago when she just.stopped. She can also sit on the big toilet, but I need to help her because although we have a step stool and a seat cover, it is all a bit precarious and I don't see how she could get up there by herself. That's why it was great when she was just using the potty. I just don't understand why she stopped :wall: It sort of coincided with the time that she started going to the toilet at day care. Maybe she doesn't like it anymore because of that? I don't know what I can do about that though - I can't exactly have a kids' size toilet plumbed into the bathroom - or invite 3 or 4 of her closest friends to come round every 2 hours to go to the toilet with her :wall:

Hey girls how do you get your kids to wear knickers?
DD refuses to wear knickers even though i went shopping with her to choose the Dora ones.

She only wants to wear nappies and pants as well! ie she doesnt want to expose her legs and she wont run around naked either!

If DD is asking to wear pants i put them on over her knickers... i mean if she wees i have to wash her knickers anyway so whats another pair of pants :rofl:
Can you put the knickers on over her nappy for a bit and then one day JUST do knickers?

I have never had a problem getting her to wear knickers M2OSB so can't help on that one.
So now I am really confused. Ten minutes ago she did a wee on the floor not two feet away from the potty. I cleaned it up and walked away because it was driving me batty.
I just went back out to find she had done a poo in the potty!!!

So nice to hear other mums in a similar boat to us! My DD (22mths) has been having loads of nappy off time ATM due to a nasty nappy rash, so I've been asking her every half an hour or so "Do you need to do wee?" and its only been the last week or so that she's starting to comprehend and say "Wees toytoy mummy". She doesn't like to use the potty, I think because it initially hurt her poor sore bum when she sat on it. Fine by me, I find the warm urine-y potty kinda nauseating anyway!

She's had a lot of nappy off time, but no undies. Today we took her nappy off first thing, went down to IL's house, didn't want to put a nappy on her for a 2 minute car ride so I got out her Dora undies - she was so excited by them! So put them on her... she went and did wees twice at the IL's house but then as soon as we came home, accident - wee on the floor, through her undies and pants. Ah well. Stripped her off, cleaned it up, fed some lunch to DS, came out and she's dancing round in poo :sick:

Cleaned her up, started cleaning the mess up, DH arrives home with the (new) apprentice. How embarrassment! :redface:

I've been told it does, niece wouldn't do a poo unless she had a nappy on, it took ages for them to get her to do poos on the potty.
Sounds like your DD is going well hun... well aside from the accident today.. ahhh yes sooo not looking forward to those messes.

Hey folks how has everyone been going? We have had an odd couple of days - one step forward one step back, one step sideways kind of thing!
So yesterday she had three accidents at day care.... After not having a single one for over two weeks. BUT when she got home, she started using the potty again - independently like she used to. So that was a win.
And today - no accidents at day care, and this afternoon she has been using the potty - two wees and a poo and we have only been home for an hour! And all independently motivated (except when we first got home I sat her on it). :hooray:
So I'm hoping that she is just putting all the skills together in her head :crossfingers: and that we might actually be making progress!
How is everyone else doing?

ok so haven't had time to read all of this thread yet *embarassed* but if I don't post I never will. Just like if I never start TT I never will. DS will be 3 in March and we (I) am getting all sorts of comments and pressure that I 'should' be TT now or he should be TT by now *sigh*.

CC have been good and it seems that most of the kids his age at CC aren't TT yet or are only just starting so that is good (he was going 1 day a week and goes 2 days a week next year). My mission before he goes back is to establish that we are TT seriously but like Pixie we rarely get a chance to stay home for 3 days in a row... we have had a few afternoons of undies only and had a wee and poo in the toilet so that is progress but that's it.

I don't know what it is about TT but it has always frightened me... I just don't wanna... but know I have to. Everything else has been fine and I can deal with it but arghhh I love nappies... rant over now :D

I totally sympathise kelebek! I was finding it mega stressful at first, but I have relaxed a bit now and accepted that it is a process that will take some time. And I use pull-ups when we go out :shhh: (even though everyone says never go back to nappies) so I don't have to stress about accidents out and about. Nappies are like a security blanket for us parents - and so hard to give up!

Hello fellow TT-ers!!!!!

DS (29 months old) is apparently a nudist!!! He has been running around naked at home and wee-ing completely independantly for a few weeks... however, not on the toilet, he just goes outside!!!

We have a potty thing and a cool seat that sits on the toilet with a step and handles, and he started at first on the potty- but wouldnt sit on it- he would stand up and try and wee into it... so i got sick of cleaning that up quickly and encouraged the outside bit, which i will say has worked really well in the sense of he is really getting to know "when" he has to go and will take himself out there AND his aim is getting better!!! lol He also knows when he has to poo- but will ask for a nappy, he has done ONE on the toilet once- and i dont think there was anythign traumatic about that experience, lol but he wont poo on there now. He will ask to sit on there every now and then and shows me an empty toilet and says "look shane poo's" even though there is nothing there lol!!!!

We started with the sticker reward, we have a chart and he gets to put a sticker on there for wee's, for sleeping in his own bed all night, for brushing teeth and for eating lots of dinner- but i kind of am half arsed about it and forget unless he says "sticker time"

So all seems pretty good EXCEPT.... i can not get the boy to wear undies (or clothes for that matter unless we are going out... but that might be a different thread!!!) and i am not game to take him out in undies coz he hasnt tried them and doesnt realise they arnt a nappy IYKWIM, and i think also before we try the going out thing we need to progress from the outside toilet to the inside one!! We had a few weeks of rain on and off and instead of using the toilet he just didnt want me to take his nappy off.. so i think it will take some time!!! We have the nappy pants which i started calling nappy undies and now he wont put them on either!!

He goes to CC one day a week- but is on three week break so i thought i would use this time to try and get him going on the toilet some more and maybe attempt a walk to the park or something in undies and see how we go!

Oh also he is great at sleeping without a nappy for his day sleeps- he never wee's in his sleep and he is straight outside when he wakes up- but i havent tried all night yet.

DD is cracking it so i better go- but i will be keeping up with this thread!!!!

Hi ladies, well I;ve been thinking about taking the plunge with TTing DD. She got some undies for Chrissy and is keen to try them...me not so keen!! Will read the thread and hopefully find out where to start!! I really have no idea!!!!

Well we have some of the two steps forward one step back thing happening... he still prefers naked-ness... lol but last week he would constantly say "i need to do poo's" run to the toilet and nothing, this happened like ten times a day for about three days (on all days he eventually did a poo at night once his nappy was on)- but that phase seems to have stopped now.

Yesterday i managed to get him to WEAR UNDIES!!!!!! And shorts... and he proceeded to wet his pants twice- so after two changes i gave up and let him be his free naked self.. then later in the afternoon when DH came home he wanted to go outside with Daddy and play in the ute, so we said he had to put clothes on- so he put shorts on with no nappy and no undies and with some asking evry few minutes he remembered to pull his shorts down and wee!!! (still outside lol) I think i can kind of see where he delema is, as when he is nearly finished wee-ing and the stream isnt so full on it dribbles onto his pants- which is why i am guessing the few times in the past where he has been good and remebered to pull down undies or shorts, he usually takes them right off and ditches them and wont put anything back on...

But we are getting there slowly.. today is a bit on the cooler side so i told him he had to wear clothes and he could either wear undies under his clothes or a nappy- we settled on a nappy- but then he wouldnt put clothes on!!!

How is everyone else going????

SB we are going pretty well. DD wears knickers to day care and usually doesn't have any accidents but if she is wearing knickers at home she will just sit down on the potty and wee straight through them :doh: so at home we just let her run around half naked. Going out we use pull-ups (mainly for my sanity) and take her to the toilet at the usual interval (90 mins to 2 hours) - that's the part that is still pretty hit and miss but we are having more and more success lately so that's positive. Starting to think we might actually get there one day! We do still have bunny in the headlights days when she seems to completely forget everything but they are not too common.

Just joining in this thread. DD has been sitting on the potty regularly for a few months but not actually doing anything. I figure that if she is happy to sit I am not going to discourage that :) If I go to the loo she brings her potty in too to sit on.

The other night she actual did wee on the potty. :) I was so excited. But in true DD fashion has decided she has done it once and thats enough.

Just had to share with someone (DH is decidedly not interested. But that's a whole other thread:) ) DD did wee on the potty again. She was so happy :)

OMG - I feel like I've just arrived home! This thread is perfect for us atm.
We've been trying to get DS1 interested. He'll do a wee on the loo before a shower/bath and before bed/nap. It's currently 50/50 success rate.

But ...

He won't tell us if he needs to wee. Won't tell us after. He'll happily sit in a wet nappy all day. And don't get me started on poo - we're a long way off hitting the loo on that issue!

I think part of the TT issue here is my and DH's consistency in getting him onto the loo. As DS1 is still in a nappy, it's easy to "forget" or think "I'll ask him in 5 mins", which becomes 10, which becomes 15 etc. But by the same token, I wish DS1 would cotton onto the idea that it's not "nice" to be wet or pooey.

We're on hols up the sunshine coast soon, I'm tempted to focus on TTing him then as DH and I will have plenty of time (compared to the usual goings on at home).

AndiE... lol my son is the same!! He knows he has a poo-ey nappy but still runs away so i have to chase him and pin him down to change it!! He would sit in his poo all day if i let him!!!! We are at the stage thought where he will let me take off a wet nappy (he comes and says Mummy i am full of wee's) and my bigget bargaining power is that if he lets me take a dirty one off he doesnt have to put another one on!!

Its been raining here again so he couldnt make it outside yesterday so we tried using the toilet again- but the poor lil guy wants to stand up- which is VERY MESSY indeed!!! But he did actually got here all by himself once and came to tell me he even cleaned up- very cute!! But he used alot of toilet paper mopping up his mess lol

Just thought I'd pop in. TT has all but stopped for us for the moment. Put knickers on DD, she freaked, held on and then hasn't told me since that she's done wees or poos. So I'm happy to hold off for a bit.

But just thought I'd let you know, you can get a free toilet training guide from Huggies - you can download the form and attach a pull-ups barcode and they'll send it to you. It comes with Disney Pixar Cars/Disney Princess progress chart, big kid certificate and stars stickers.

Bit of an update from us... DD is nudie at home and hasn't had a wee accident in ages. Takes herself to the potty independently and does wees! Very exciting.

BUT - she doesn't "get" the whole undies concept. She thinks anything on her bum is a nappy :wall: As soon as I put undies or even training pants on her, she assumes it's a nappy and doesn't seem inclined to either tell us she needs to wee or go to the potty herself. Any suggestions???

BTDT OP and to be honest I'm still not sure if she gets it. We still let her run around without knickers at home and just like your DD she takes herself independently. At daycare she is usually fine with knickers, although there have been more accidents lately. Where I'm making absolutely zero progress is when we are out and about. I still have her in pullups for going out (and we go out a lot on non-daycare days) and she never tells me if she needs to go, and is usually very reluctant when it comes time to go to the toilet. I don't know how they do it day care that is obviously so different from what I do, as they seem to have a lot more success than I do. I am seriously starting to get discouraged again. I feel like loads of people I know IRL who have just started have already got their kids all the way out of nappies and I am a bit useless because all these months later I'm still not there yet :wall: I try to tell myself it will come in time, and that I don't need to push it, but maybe I do need to push it? Arrrggghhh! :doh:

I'm actually too scared to even try when we go out yet... I'm still putting the mcn on!

My MIL has bought some pull ups that we use at her house, idea being they'd be training pants, but she just uses them like a nappy. We've also got normal undies and actual training cloth nappies, but same thing - she treats them like nappies!!!

Anyone else have any ideas??

Oh thank goodness I've found a thread dedicated to the trials and tribulations of toilet training!

My DD is 2 and a half and we've been "training" slowly but surely for a while. She does wees only on the toilet (but has to strip naked to do it?!) but we can't get any further.

I've popped her in big-girl pants to let her feel what it's like and we're also in the Nappy pants but she just can't seem to get it!

I found a DVD with Elmo and another with the BIG Blue Bear showing how great going to the toilet is, but she's not interested, so on we go ... !

I don't quite know what the next step is. Any thoughts?

Another head scratcher here.. my son is just happy to be a nudist!! He is a hippy boy- he runs around the house naked and wee's outside!! I have gotten him to wear undies a handful of times- one day he did really well, except that he kept weeing in the undies... he will ask for a nappy for poo's, but will just wee outside independantly no dramas.

I got a book from the library called Potty Training Boys, and so far we have done everything right- but in typical advice book style, they handle my two problems in one line "Your son will love to wear big boy pants" Um actually no- he doesnt seem to care about them...

And "once your son is used to weeing standing up out in the garden - he will adapt that to the toilet..." um..... ok, WHEN??????????????????????????

LOL.... We are taking things really slowly, he is great at all the things that are supposed to be hard... he sleeps during the day without a nappy and we have never had an accident, and he can tell me when he has to go- he just wont do it on the loo!!!!

Yes gotta love the books StarBright! All sounds so simple and the timeframes they present are not very realistic if my DD is anything to go by. While I take my hat off to someone who goes for the full Gina Ford style psychological warfare, I decided that trying to do it in one week was too much pressure. I don't know about a two year old but it was way too much pressure for me.
So when I picked DD up from daycare today I could see in the carer's eyes that she had given her the run around today. Apparently she was refusing to go to the toilet and acting like the carer was going to hurt her by putting her on there. I said she is always like that with me! Apparently it is the first time she has been like that at day care and usually she just goes to the toilet. I hope it's not the beginning of a trend! :wall:

Hi all...I am also muddling along with mixed results.
Op and pixie, I actually think pull ups are confusing...dd is starting to understand knickers better because they literally soak, but training paints style nappies confuse her, and she thinks it's a nappy. So far we just do potty at home, and nappies out, but I am scared to try knickers out because, like many have mentioned, dd doesn't really tell me when she needs to go. I have noticed she is aware of her muscles though, because she can wee on cue, so if I remind her, we can catch all sees in the potty.

My big issue is poo. Dd hides to do it and won't let me put her anywhere near the toilet. In fact we both ended up in tears last week over it and I think I traumatized her :(. I had noticed she was about to go and tried to get her to sit on the loo, but she screamed the house down. Now she waits until she has a nappy on.

Two year olds are do stubborn!!

Our attempts died down until this week when DS asked to do wees on the toilet not once but TWICE! In the one morning. So he did two wees on the toilet (YAY!) but another two accidents on the floor. The next day he did the same thing again but then we had to go out and DH wanted to put him in a nappy in case he wee'd in the car. I was willing to take a change of clothes and risk it but DH wasn't prepared to take that risk! So since then, DS refuses to do wees on the toilet again :wall:What do you do when you have to go out? Just accept that there might be puddles on the shop floor?!

I did try with knickers for going out and friends of mine seem to have success with it, but at this point she just doesn't tell me when she needs to go and she is very reluctant to go to the toilet when we are out. I started to find going out so unpleasant and anxiety provoking that I really had to stop. I wasn't enjoying taking her out, I couldn't concentrate on what I needed to do, and I decided that until she can tell me that she wants to go, or has dry pullups consistently when I take her to the loo, I would leave her in pullups. I know its probably confusing for her but I just can't do it. If I can't even take my daughter for a babycino without having a heart attack something's gotta give.
She has knickers at day care so she gets the hang of it there, although she has had more accidents there lately and I wonder if that's my fault because I use pullups when we go out. We have this weird kind of status quo going, but progress... not for a while!

I feel like I should join in... Not that we are seriously starting in any big way, though!

But Sam seems to be becoming more aware of his bodily functions. If his nappy is off, we often see him grab his penis just before he starts to wee. I know so many people say just go straight to the toilet and don't use a potty - but my health issues mean helping him onto a toilet several times a day is just going to be exhausting and painful - don't want to go there. Again, the whole let him run around naked and stick a potty underneath him when you notice - maybe when my health is in a better state but the last few days it's been a challenge getting myself to the toilet on time because movement is so painful so that's not happening any time soon.

So we got a potty... Thinking that for now, we'd just get Sam to sit on it beside the bath while it's filling up. Running water makes everyone want to pee, right? So shouldn't be too long before we catch something and can praise him and he can slowly get the idea.

Umm... What happens when he's scared to sit on the potty? We can't even get him to sit on it! He does like to stand in it, though, but not something I want to encourage. DH is thinking that maybe we just leave his nappy on and try to get him to sit on the potty, but he really does seem scared of it and springs up straight away. Keep persevering? Give up? I just don't know!

My lil boy has just recently re-decided he likes his potty lol!! Not to sit on though, to stand and oint at- but his aim is getting MUCH better lately, he is actually getting it in the little bowl!! So maybe the outside wee-ing has paid off!!

He has never been scared of it- though he is scared of the actualy toilet (we have spet a fortune on toilet accessories, we have a potty and a seat that goes over the toilet with steps, and another soft cushiony seat for on the toilet)

Honestly, i have found the easiest thing for my little boy- which i think you would probably find most suitable for you- is to let him wee outside. For me it was pure laziness, i didnt want to clean up wee. He started with the potty inside- but would sit on it, he would point at it and wee would go right up the wall and all around the potty but never in it... so i got a bit sick of cleaning wee, and outside wee-ing began.. for you i think that would be easiest for you and Sam coz there is no lifting, no cleaning and no stress for you. Shane is now independant and takes himself out side, and as i said we are just transitioning back to the potty- but now he can aim!!! We have started putting the potty outside so he can wee into out there and we jsut hose it out!

Another potty fan here. I guess people are so adamant about them using the toilet because they want the whole process over and done with ASAP. But for us, DD is too little to use the toilet herself, even if she could climb up without falling in, she needs a toilet seat cover or similar. The potty is easy because she can use it independently it is the right size and comfortable for her. We did buy two - one she likes, the other one she wouldn't even sit on. The one she likes is a Fisher Price on shaped like a proper seat, under the seat it has a removable bowl. The one she won't sit on is one of those little all in one cheapo ones. So maybe a different style would suit him better. But good luck BW and welcome :D

I'm so glad I found this thread as I have just started TT my 2 year old daughter this past week and its good to see that some of the things she has been doing aren't so strange after all :D She is another one who likes to go nudies!

I just thought I'd give TT a go as bub #2 is due in 5 weeks so if she got the hang of it then great it was over with before the new bub is here, if not no big deal. She seemed scared at first so I tried a different potty. Ended up getting the fisher price one someone else mentioned that looks like a little toilet and it plays a song when the wee in it! I never thought I'd resort to anything like that, but she loves it!! We've only been using that the last 2 days but she's going pretty well. She had 2 accidents this morning and about 5 wees on the potty which she walked to all by herself without me asking if needed to go!! :dance: One of the accidents was when she was running around the room like a looney so I guess she was too distracted to notice, but the trail did lead to the potty with a decent puddle in front of it so I take that as a good sign that she realised she was weeing and tried to get to the potty.

I know its early days and I'm sure we'll have good bad days but I can' help but feel super proud right now :D Will see how she goes this afternoon after her nap. Will definately be keeping an eye on this thread too.

:hello: munchkin_mumma and welcome! Sounds like your DD is going great! I think we might have the same potty - I had to take the batteries out, the music was driving me demented. And it sometimes went off randomly in the middle of the night which was just too weird.
Well we seem to have had some progress here over the weekend - she has started telling me when she wants to go to the toilet! :hooray: :leap: :hooray: over the weekend we had only one wet pullup and that was really late on saturday evening when she would normally have already been in a nappy for bed. She is doing so well! Still in pullups for going out atm as I tend to badger her if she is wearing knickers and fret too much which just causes tension. But hooray :loveshower: finally feel like we are getting somewhere again.

DD has still been going really well. I dont think we've had any puddles since I last posted. YAY!! Only problem is she wont pull her undies down so if I happen to not be in the room at the time she'll just wee right through them. But I guess it's good that she still does it on the potty.

We havent been out the whole week cause I'm too scared to take her out in undies adn dont want to put her in nappies and confuse her! Think I'm gonna have to put her in a nappy though as she doesnt tell me she needs to go and if I ask her she always says no, even if she goes 2 seconds later!! Oh well, it's still early days :)

I've got a three year old. She uses the toilet fine during the day etc.
I just don't know how to train her at night? She's abit odd about her room and will not leave it unless we let her out. I've even tried coaxing her out in the mornings, but she won't open the door, or even get out of her bed. And our bedroom is at the other end of the house - I've got a monitor, but I'm afraid of hurting her confidence if I'm too slow to get there.
Also... I'll take her out of the house in knickers within a certain radius and she's fine, but we've never braved the longer trips. I get a bit anxious over how to handle an accident in public.
(I think I have more problems with this toilet training than she does?!)
I'm sorry that I'm bombarding you guys. I've had those two things in my head for aaages and then I saw this thread.. So I would love any tips haha. And again, sorry for the pity-party I've thrown..

Welcome Kamarine, we are all novices here!!! Not sure if we can help- but its always nice to talk about stuff even if we cant :-)

DS (2 and a half) seems to have some how trained himself for night time and nap time- he simply refused a nappy. So during his day sleep (when he has one) he is usually naked, if he were in undies i would suspect we would have an accident, so naked it is. At night he will go to sleep naked (yes he is naked alot) but i will usually put a nappy on him before i go to bed- which he takes off first thing in the morning and goes outside for a wee.

I'm not sure how oyu would go with DD in the morning- maybe out the potty in her bedroom???? THen she can get up and use it without having to leave her room?? On a side note- thats kind of a good thing that she doesnt venture out lol i know alot of people who have the complete opposite problem and their toddlers wake up and wander the house getting uop to mischeif before the parents even know they are awake!! My DS is pretty goood- he wakes up but will come find me where ever i am (musical beds at our place at the moment lol with a 7 month old too i am often in her room or in the spare bed with her, or some mroning by a miracle i am still in my bed!!!)- and he still has his nappy on, but as we make the transition from wee-ing outside to the toilet (which apparently miraculously happens according to me book :o) he will be able to get to the loo.

As for venturing out in undies... DS made a few quick trips out a lately, one naked coz we went to a party and hi spilled jiuce all over himself and i didnt have a change of clothes for him, so once the clothes came off, he went the full monty and refused a nappy lol So in the car trip home (about 20 minutes) he was nappy free, i just made sure i asked him if he had to do a wee before we got in the car and he said no he was ok (he had done one at the park a little bit before we left) no accidents!! Then twice he did a quick dash to the local shops, once with me and once with DH with undies and shorts and all was good.. then we went for a swim to the river and he wanted to wear undies, it was going to be a long trip so i was a bit dubious, but he wanted so i put them on and asked if he had to go wee, and told him if while we were driving he had to go to tell us and we will stop, he ended up falling asleep and when i went to take him out of his seat, he was wet, but he wasnt upset or anything, i just said "oh dear, did you do wee's???" and first he said "no" and i said, "hmm , i think you did!! OOppsie!!" and laughed it off, he started laughing and we changed him and he was happy as larry and ran around in his swimmers and did wee's in the bush like he loved to for the rest of the day- but on the trip home we put a nappy on!!

We are still having no luck with poo on the toilet, his aim is getting better for the wee, so i am thinking of trying to encourage him to use the loo for wee's and then he might be happier to do his poo there!!!! Who knows!!!!

We have had some success and some accidents this week, so I'm taking the success' and running with them!

Miss A asked twice to go to the toilet at Childcare this week and both times she did wees !!:clap:
But then yesterday she took her nappy off and decided to poo on the lounge room floor so not happy Jan :wall:
I guess we have to celebrate the small wins!
