The persn i keep in contact lives ut in the bush... but se is thinking of visiting, so we may have to do a visit together!! great idea :) I really wanted to visit when 3 particular nurses are tere, these 3 rally helped me through some bad times (lie when we thought we were going to lose Anneliese) and i want them to see how big and beautiful she is now :D

Quick update...
Alexa is on 3 solid feeds a day (but does NOT like meat, any suggestions..) & 3-4 180ml bottles
She has 2 bottom teeth through but has another 4 teeth giving her hell (she is not a pleasant teether)... I have had 2 weeks of a non sleeping baby arghhhhhhh
She has just figured out how to crawl forwards.. but when she gets lazy she does a belly flow forwards or starts rolling LOL...
She can aso say mum & yummy, but wont say dad yet LOL...
She weighed in last month at just over 7kg & 66cm long, she is starting to fit into 00now too, so that is exciting LOL....

Mitch - I read somewhere you cook it & freeze it and grate it once frozen solid - it goes like fine flakes (of chocolate) and very easy to mix with other stuff no chewing required.
I tried grating frozen roast beef slices and steak and it works but didn't give to babies - so that bit I not sure on.

Well we all have colds at the moment, freaked when Willow started to get a cold I was so worried that she was going to end up in hospital like last time. Silly I know about after everything that has happened with missy moo, just didn't want her going back in. But it looks like shes getting better so I freaked out for nothing.
On the upside Willow said "Mum" for the first time this morning, I was so happy I ended up crying. She been saying "Dad" for about a week now, But I'm over the moon that she is finally looking at me and saying Mum. My little bub is growing up, Oh it a nice feeling.

Just popping in to say hi and a happy new year to you all. We've spent a LOT of time in hospital lately so no time to get onto the forum. Gus was admitted for "failure to thrive" and nasal gastric tube feeding in November and remained there until discharge a couple of days before Christmas. Then we had him admitted for another week during the first week of January with a bad case of croup/para-influenza 3. Gus is doing better now still quite sick but at least he's home. He's now weighing a whopping 7.2kg he ha thanks to the full time NGT feeding since November. He's still completely refusing to eat or drink anything other - than sipping small amounts of water and crunching the odd potato crisp - so thank god for the tube feeding and kangaroo pump! He's currently learning to walk. Can manage about 10-12 steps alone before his speed due to momentum is to great and he tumbles. Tis very cute to watch how proud he is of his efforts. Anyhow thought I should say hi as I'm sometimes prone to 'lurking'. xx

So good to hear from you. Sorry to hear that your little man has been in and out of hospital. It's very stressful, isn't it? Hope that he keeps packing on the weight. How long will he need the feeding tube?
OMG that he is walking! That must be so wonderfull to see! No wonder he is proud - I bet you are so proud of Gussy too!
Raven, AWWW that Willow said Mum! It is a proud moment isn't it? Especially when they have been prem. It seems like such a long time before they start to do things.
hope Gus goes from strength to strength now he is getting continuous feeds and mobile.Maybe he will get an apetite. Gee he is doing so well considering his rocky start and bumpy ride so far.Well done little guy.

Raven, Ivy and Noah are good thanks. They are both cruising the furniture and they have bumps and bruises everywhere from thinking that they are able to stand on their own. LOL. Poor little munchkins. It's hard when there are so many big kids around and you just want to do what they are doing!
I thought Ivy was coming down with another middle ear infection the other day - she was spiking temps and was grizzly. She is on long term antibiotics for just that until we are able to see the ENT. Anyway, it all subsided. She's still pulling at her right ear (and there are no signs of any teeth) so I am hoping that the antibiotics are doing their job.
So far we have been middle ear infection free for two months YAY! It is so good to have a happy baby!She slept through the night for the first time last Thursday and I thought we had hit the jackpot!!! But alas, it was only a one night wonder. The last few nights we have been up playinng from midnight until 4am. *SIGH* She is very cheeky and her eyes light up when she smiles. She's still pretty petite compared to Noah but has stacked on the weight since she discovered bread!
Noah, my big boofer boy is growing at an enormous rate. At his last checkup with the ECHN, he had grown 6cm!He was about 11.5kgs at last weigh in. He is popping teeth left right and centre and now has eight pearlies, as opposed to his five at Christmas. He has been sleeping through since about the end of October and we moved him the other weekend into his bigboy room. It was sad in a way but nice to have one cherub sleeping at night. Over the last week he has learnt a new word 'car'. Now EVERYTHING is car! It is very cute, especially when he sees his sisters coming and he yells out "CAR CAR CAR" flapping about madly! He used to lie on your shoulder and say 'ug (hug) oh ug'... now he cuddles up to you and says 'car-ar-car' .
IKWYM about looking at our little prems in awe and wonder. When you think about their beginnings and what they are up to now. It truly is amazing.
bummer i did a big post last night and it wouldnt go through grrr....
Am about to take Nixon to have his hearing test. I know he can hear hopefully equally in each ear so fingers crossed. DH was born with 30% loss in one ear, so hopefully he has my extra good hearing.

Way to go on the walking thats a clever boy you've got there! sorry to hear he hasnt been so well of late, glad he was home for chirstmas though. when u say failure to thrive, what was or wasnt he doing? was he loosing weight, not eating?
Raven- sorry youve all been sick, glad its nothing too bad though, must have melted your heart when you heard "mum" for the first time!
Nixon just started saying "bub" a few days ago its so cute hehe, think he is close to saying dad but havent heard anything remotly like mum as yet.

Mitch- i'll try remember what i said in my post. um have u tried disgising the meat with a food that she likes to eat? and starting in small qty of meat then gradually increase? maybe the meat by itself is hard for her to swallow or doesnt like the texture.i made up some bolognaise stuff for the first time yesterday that nixon seems to like. it was just mince broned then add canned tomatoes, tomato paste, grated zucinni & carrot and simmer with some water.

Nixon's hearing test went well, she used a different sound or something that most have at that particular age and test as he wasnt really responding to it but she wasnt too concerned. said he did good! he sat on my knee and there were speakers either side of the room. Will have another test in 12months and then possibly at 3.5years.

Nic so glad that Nixon's hearing test went well.
Willow is finally eating vegies, it took a while but she seems to like them now.
She still only has her 2 teeth, its taking ages for more to come down. I really wish they would just come down as she seem to be in heaps of pain with them.
We are planning to move to Melb within the year, I can't wait!!

Hi there! Looks like i'm not the only one who hasn't been in here for a while!
Things are going well here. Kyla is pulling herself up into standing now which is good.
We've also started our down regulation cycle for IVF which is exciting. I'm also a bit apprehensive though, firstly because we were so lucky last time and it worked on our first cycle, I just hope we are just as lucky this time. Also hoping that we don't have another prem experience! I'm seeing Dr McBain at Melb IVF who we saw last time and he said he would refer me to the high risk pregnancy unit at the Womans or Monash this time. Has anyone had any experience with these that they can tell me about?

Ivy and Noah are sick atm so I am having a bit of a shocker, having just gone back to work (night duty). *SIGH* it seems to be a tradition with my kids to get sick as soon as maternity leave runs out. Anyway, we are still at home, not in the hospital, which is a big plus. Other than that, we are still cruising the furniture. Ivy sometimes teases us and lets go but is still not standing on her own. I think once Ivy starts, Noah will follow quickly.
Hi there Tiff - Sorry to hear that Ivy and Noah are sick! It sounds like they are doing great too! Cruising the furniture is fantastic - as I said, Kyla has only recently started pulling up on furniture.
Hope they are feeling better soon and fingers crossed that they STAY out of hospital!

Nixon was 10months yesterday, he has started slithering or commando crawling around as of about 2 days ago. I was up at 2.30am last night after he vomitted everywhere in his bed and had it all over him. He vomitted his breakfast up also, but no temp and happy in himself. He has kept his lunch down so hoping nothing more will come of it.

We are well here. Josh is doing great. He is walking! He took his first steps about a month ago and since then he has been walking little bits here and there, but over the last week he has really taken off and is walking everywhere now.
I'm at 28 weeks now with my current pregnancy. It's so strange to think that Josh arrived 4 weeks from now. The doctors are expecting that this bub will be early too, but I'm hoping for just a little bit longer this time. Fingers crossed!

had a bit on m/s a few days ago but nothing since other then some cramping on and off.
I thought Nixon was better but half way through his dinner it all came back up. so tried some watermelon same thing half way through brought it all back up.
went to bed ok and i just went to check on him and here he is laying in a pile of vomit again, as i went to clean it vomitted again.
poor boy he was still asleep while doing it. im going to doc tomorrow so will see her about him also.

About that pair, it started off as a cold and has rapidly gone down hill. Now we are having breathing issues(read asthma, ventolin and prednisone) and of course Ivy has another middle ear infection despite long term antibiotics. I am at work now, happily away from the sick house, looking after the squidgy newbie babies (don't worry, have scrubbed my hands fanatically).Ahhh Night duty, good for giving you a different perspective on things.
I can't believe that you are 28 weeks. I will keep EVERYTHING crossed that you get a little further along with your cooking baby.

Only having a small party for Willow, but its going to be a lot of fun.

Carrie, I was with the High Risk obs at Monash, they were pretty good. I only had three different obs through the entire pregnancy with Ned, which for a public hospital is pretty good. I had fortnightly visits from 16 weeks. Only real issue was the cost of parking!

Divvy- Thanks for that. I just don't know how it works in the public system. Last time around I was private with an ob - I payed heaps and then ended up having Kyla in the public RWH due to the circumstances. So I'm thinking that maybe next time around I'll just go to the woman's and go public.
ETA: Just a question - when Kyla stands up, due to her lack of muscle tone her ankle (especially the right) is majorly pronated...it doesn't seem to worry her but gosh it looks like it would kill to me! Has anyone experienced this with their bubba's -if so, has it corrected itself, or how did you deal with it???
Hi Ladies, I looked through the last few pages of the thread so I feel like I already know something about most of you :)
Tiff already knows my story but I'll just tell the rest of you about my little Gem. She was born 29-7 at 33 weeks, 1800g, and is now nearly 7 months old. We don't know why she was premie....her placenta was on the small side of normal so best guess is that she just outgrew it. I had PPROM & my doctor advised a caesar because she was a posterior breech & u/s showed compromised doppler flow to the placenta. We planned it for 2 days later but I went into labour that night.
She was born pink & healthy and never had any problems other than sleepy feeding. She was discharged after 2 weeks & we spent the next 2 1/2 months trying to get her to feed properly. I had no idea it was going to be such a hard slog. I really wish she had been kept in NICU just a bit longer, with more tube feeds for a week or 10 days, so that she could have put on more weight and fed better once she got home. Even expressed milk in a bottle had to be squeezed down her throat. I was sooo glad to return the breast pump in early November!
She is now doing very well, rolling both ways and trying to be awake as much of the day as possible! I've never had a baby who slept so little.
I posted a few weeks ago about iron supplementation. I contacted the NICU liaison nurse about that & she promised to pull her chart and get back to me. NOTHING...I am very disappointed. I had waited to make an appointment for her 6 month visit until I heard from the nurse, but I've made the appt anyway now and will ask the GP to take a haemoglobin level. I've been able to get her going on rice cereal the past two weeks so she is getting some iron from that.
She is asleep now & probably won't be for much longer, so I'd better get a shower before the rest of the day slips away!

Did you ever see the movie Red Rock West? The 'bad guy' keeps trying to leave the town but ends up reentering it over & over, for various reasons. I started to feel like that about the JHH. I went out a few weeks ago to visit someone who had had a new baby, in NICU recovering from the ventouse. It all seemed way too familiar! even the smell of the meals.
Why Castle, I do believe you are spot on but we are not going to see him until the end of March. We made the appointment in December, so have been waiting a long time for our visit. How did you guess?
I had to travel all over the country side today just to confirm that Ivy has a middle ear infection, have it documented and get different antibugs. She's been on long term amoxil, now we are going try Augmentin Duo for five days. Blurgh, I am so over all of this illness. Our paed is proving very difficult to get any kind of help when I need it, I ask you, why become a paed if you don't want to deal with the clientelle?
OOOHHH, know what you mean about the NICU and the John. Everytime I go back there, it's like it was yesterday.

Tiggy, about the ENT, LOL I lived across the street from him for 3 years!! He is the only paediatric ENT in Australia, which is why you've had to wait so long. He is supposed to be very good at his work. Can't you get the paed to hurry things up? What kind of middle ear infection can wait for 4 months to be seen?
Is your paed using a pneumatic otoscope? They HAVE to do that to get a definitive diagnosis. I continue to get ear infections as an adult so this issue is close to my heart! Personally I think long term Amoxil is worthless. MY paed had ME on that for months in my early teens until I was referred to an ENT who promptly took out my adenoids & put in grommets. Made a huge difference to my life--esp the adenoids.
Amoxil is fine if you are jumping on the infection in the first day or so. After that it probably needs something stronger. My guess is that the Augmentin won't do it either. But, definitely worth a try. PLG. (poor little guy/girl).

Look, I know he's good, he told me so himself!! We saw him to have Noah's frenulum ligated and he told us point blank he is the best in the business LOL! God complex, much?!?!

I think you are right, the Amoxil does nothing and everytime the Ivy girl gets a cold, she gets a middle ear infection, fever, miseries and what's worse it HAS to be interferring with her hearing and thus her speech. Also right; on the Augmentin Duo, she has been on that SO many times it's not funny, I'm sure whatever bug is growing in there is resistant.The only antibug that knocked the infection on the head was Erythromycin, however, the GP (who I finally tracked down in Newcastle)said Aug Duo. *SIGH*
Her current temp is 38.5 degrees. Low grade for her.
As for the paed, that was my expectation, yes, that he would see her distress ( and mine) and pull some strings so that the kid can get grommets now. She has had recurrent otitis media since June last year, averaging one every 3 weeks, 3 perforations, numerous antibiotics.
Enough is enough! All my kids have needed grommets, adnoidectomy and tonsillectomy (bar one with the tonsils), it IS a familial trait, what is the big deal???
But NO, I can't even get in to see the paed, I can't talk to him,get hold of him when I need some advice, blah, blah, blah, am just over it. I have a better relationship with his receptionist! I miss our old paed. She was brilliant. Having her on my side is a good argument for moving back to Sydney. However, Michael is SO much better than our discharge paed- at least he listens when I DO get to see him!:wall:
They are reluctant to treat otitis media aggressively, as it should be treated, b/c of the publicity surrounding that study which showed that many cases did OK untreated. HOWEVER, my argument is, were those cases actually diagnosed properly in the first place?? Was all wax removed so that the eardrum could be visualised? Was a pneumatic otoscope used? Or did someone just look in & say, yep, looks red & bulgy. Which is NOT a definitive diagnosis.
A very, very good paed whom I knew about 10 years ago told me that the child has to be seen immediately, started on amoxil. Then you recheck in 3 days. If not cleared up, then you have a choice of 2 antibiotics, and recheck in 3-5 days. If still not cleared, then you have to go to a heavy hitter, one of those one-a-day (non-PBS probably) antibiotics. He told me in no uncertain terms that there was NO ear infection which could not be properly killed!
As an adult, and your kids will probably have to do the same, I'm very careful if I ever get a cold. It's worth it to use an OTC product when a cold starts to try to dry up some of the discharge, or at the least to keep it running freely. Personally I think some of us have very very short Eustachian tubes. Then, as soon as I get the first niggle of an ear infection, I call or race in to be seen. In that way you can avoid perforations. The ENT told me that most perfs are from a strep infection in the ear. They come on very, very quickly so it's even more important to act right away for those. My last perf was when I was 26. We were out to dinner with friends & I felt it start. I swallowed the first erythromycin 3 hours later but it was already too late. Also, I've found that if I don't feel nearly 100% better 24 hours after the first dose, it will clear after a week, but will recur within 6 weeks. Early action is the key. :)
About the god complex...he is SO like that. I purposely said nothing about his personal attributes, but GAG. We used to joke about it, "Saw him putting the bins out & he looked at me," or "guess what, he said hello to me today."
OK, off my hobby horse now. Need to investigate why son 2 hasn't come down for breakfast...

With the middle ear infections in my kids; We went round and round the mulberry bush with the first set of twins, long term ABs, hospitalisation, the works. Finally the first one had grommets in at 18 months because of glue ear and barely any speech. How niave was I? I just thought she was a quiet kid!:rolleyes: The second one wasn't until she was four, they finally conceded, after a particularly nasty rupture, leaving permanent scarring on her right drum.
They told me it was low socioecomomic status that caused otitis media! I was beside myself! Not only did we NOT fit into that status, I couldn't believe that they suggested poor living conditions were at fault.
When Lily started down the same path I took her straight to the ENT and she had grommets in by the time she was 8 months and didn't look back.She went on to have her tonsils and adenoids removed later, as did the others. However because of all the antibiotics she had in her first year of life, her molars started errupting, already rotten.
By the time Lily had her tonsils taken out they were saying it had nothing to do with how poor you were and more to do with short eustatian tubes, flat bridge over the nose and that there was a familial trait, so if One had it, it was more than likely that the others would get it too. Which has totally been the case in our situation.
So far Noah has been spared but poor old Ivy is rotten with it. I shudder to think what the consequenses of the antibiotics are doing to her.
I hear you on the early action Castle, I really do but sometimes it takes days to get into a doctor out here and to even talk to the paed takes a better part of a week. I have every known antibiotic script here in my medicine cupboard but if I treat and then tell the doctors what I've done, I get in strife! I am hoping that our friend God will put Ivy in ASAP, thanking my lucky stars for staff private health insurance that was thrust upon me some years ago. It has come in handy lately.
I forgot you are not in town & it isn't as easy. We can always be seen the same day, if not at the GP then at the After Hours Clinic, which is great. Yes, it seems like you're punished for a bit of knowledge, doesn't it? If you give the ab you get strife for it, but if you don't, you risk your child's health.
BTW another thing I found helpful for me personally was to insist on getting 10 days' worth of ab. 5 or 7 days does not 'kill it dead'. Then I usually save the last day as insurance against the next bout. Of course, you can't save up if it's for a child who is still on the liquid.
I have never heard of low SES as a reason for otitis media! What a horrible thing to say! Glad that idea's been abandoned. I hope Ivy can get in asap. Am trying to think up ways to hurry up the appt but you've probably tried everything. We don't have nearly enough paeds in Newcastle, that's part of the problem I think. They get caught up in the 'interesting stuff' rather than the bread&butter business of OM. IMHO.
Thank you Castle, for listening to me rabbit on about all this. It is good to talk to someone about it all. It's very disheartening, to say the very least when you see your baby sick and nobody wants to help.
Luckily, I have found a good GP, although, I had to follow him to Jewells (he did a 'country' rotation out here in the boonies but finished up here in January). He said I could continue the AB's for 7 - 10 if I wanted but suggested that 5 days would be enough. I think I'll play that one by ear (pardon the pun)!
Yes, must agree on the knowledge = increased doctor arrogance. That is why I generally stay tight lipped about being a nurse/midwife. It's almost like it is some disease having a medical background.
Ivy seems a little better this afternoon - her temp is 37.6, so definately down, finally and a little brighter and less clingy.
