Prem's waving, clapping and pointing?

Hi. My DD was born a year ago, 3 months early and she is pretty on track apart from waving, clapping and pointing at objects.

When are prems supposed to do these things? The physio we see is pretty adamant she should be doing all of the above by now. Is she realistic in her thoughts?

What can I do to help DD. I've been pointing at everything (how rude, I know) and waving hello and goodbye to everyone we know (and don't lol) and helping her clap by holding her wrists!

Any advice would be helpful and appreciated :-)

I had a 34weeker and she started clapping at 10mos, waving around 14mos and pointing at 18mos.

Yep every baby is different, My babe is 14 months and probably started clapping and waving in the last 6 or so weeks if that.. Pointing to objects he doesn't do yet, however I can tell he is starting to use his fine motor skills the way he has started touching objects with only one finger. I hate the way professionals focus so much on what they 'should' be doing.. My son is very speech delayed and the speechy lets me know.. I think you are doing the best to encourage your DD. One day it just clicks and they never stop lol.

So PP is she 9 months corrected?
How do feel about it? Do you feel she is lacking or developing ok?
I don't know if many 'normal' 9 month olds would be doing pointing, clapping, and such (maybe one thing, but not all things)
Is your specialist offering any solutions to the suggestions?

Yes, shes 9 months corrected.

We meet a different physio tomorrow, for another assessmemt, which is part of her early intervention clinic treatment. (as well as speech and ot)

I honestly feel that she is behind with fine motor skills and want to help her progress quickly (as all mums want what's best for their kids) she also tippy toes. Cerebral palsy has been mentioned a few times being that shes prem, had brain bleeds and showing a few signs.

According to the baby centre website only some babies are doing these things at 9 months....... (I just checked)

Hope your appointment goes well and either you are reassured about her development or you are given something that will help her to develop.

It's hard when you don't know what is needed.

My "normal" 12 month old started clapping at 10 months and has only just started pointing and waving recently - and it's a huge novelty at the moment!

So we have a plan and lots of exercises to do every day now! Review in a month.

I hate how they seem to make prem mums think their kid is delayed more than the corrected age. DD2 was not prem and waved and clapped at 10.5 months. I can't remember pointing but after that. She is perfectly normal.

I know, every follow up appointment I cringe. I know full termers who aren't doing these things at 1 yet, and they aren't getting the same treatment. :-\

I know DD will do things in her own time. But for now I can't help but feel this way due to what they say and how the medical professionals act and make it a big deal!

When you constantly have health professionals monitoring your childs progress that "every kid does every thing in their own time" motto kind of goes out the window.

I wish I could just be left to feel like that and believe that motto. But yeah, physios and paeds get in the way of that happening :-(

He was on his due date but it is annoying when he goes to gp and she sits there for half hr asking him if he can do things like he is a dog who is meant to perform tricks , but not as much pressure as you I would expect I've learnt to ignore drs and nurses on some things cause they make things out to be worse than they are

I remember the feeling.
Best thing to do when what you think and what doctors says contradict, is do some research (eg check babycentre, child youth health, other child development websites).
I was lucky, I used to be a nanny and already had 2 older kids when my prem was born. So I had an idea of what 'normal' development was. But when it's your first it's a different story!

Go with your mother heart!
