It's really the straps that are a PITA in the 'mainstream' highchairs and not the seams or padding IMO. It really just isn't that hard to clean them and certainly doesn't take 10 minutes. Straps and buckles are on all high chairs and that is where the food often stains or gets stuck. When it comes to cleaning a 'non-Ikea' highchair, I just wipe it down with the same cloth I've used to clean DD - or another if she's too grotty, lol! As I said early, I give my chair a quick vacuum when I do the house (2-3 times a week) and it's seriously isn't a problem.
Everyone said I should get the Ikea chair too but I really don't see what all the fuss about the 'normal' chairs is about - it just isn't that hard!
I got a cheapie foldup one from Toys R Us - it has snoopy on it! lol
TBH I wanted one that was multi height, so I could feed them from the couch of whatever, but I got this one as it was easily transportable which we needed at the time. I loved it. It was $100 and it is padded, but not like full on, there is nowhere for the food to get stuck etc. It wipes clean in a second, DD used it from 9 months through to 2 years and still does sometimes.
I also had a Childcare brand hook on high chair, which she still uses. It is great for breakfast bar benches and dining tables, it is collapsable and easy to use - fits in my suitcase and is light as so I travel with it frequently. It was $60, and really, if we hadn't have travelled to Melbourne without it, I would never have bought the big 'proper' highchair at all.
HTH :)
Alas, I've used them many times though! I agree they are great and simple but lack bells and whistles. I think if you don't want bells and whistles and are happy with a 3 point safety harness then great, they are good. I just don't think the 'bells and whistles' highchairs are that hard to clean - at all! I really don't know why people say that. They just aren't that difficult!! And, regardless of the cleaning, the 'bells and whistles' are very handy. And yes, this is coming from a mum who had her heart set on the ikea chair :). I should also say we have a Childcare 'rip-off' of the Ikea chair in our back yard and to take away with us (or road trip holidays) but we never use it instead of our Chicco chair. Although it's simple and great, it just doesn't compare :)
I am a bit lazy when it comes to cleaning, I must admit!
Yeah I find im a bit lazy too with cleaning, but you get that with baby number 4 on the way.
I also found with my kids that they like to eat then get out of the chair/leave the table straight away so all the padding of the 'bells and whistles' just werent necessary. I also found I never used the lay back option on the peg perego either because we did BLS with our last baby she never needed to lay back.
Love the plastic moulded chairs!
I reckon if your DH is prepared to clean the highchair he can buy which ever one he wants!
