Its funny, I use a bassinet that is right at teh hight of the bed so I have it right near my pillow when they are new new borns (DH is uneasy about having them that tiny in bed as he tends to sleep with lots of blankets) When I moved them from there to the cot I was moving them like half a metre further away from me, I was so un easy about it, no way I could move them from my room all together LOL

It is of course a personal choice, it also depends on the baby.
We had DD in our room from day 1, we didnt buy a bassinette as i figured they were a waste of money but i ended up getting one very soon after she came home cause she didnt like the cot, too much space for her i think. Apparently they like to be kept in small spaces as its a comfort for them but every baby is different. I would personally recommend you get the bassinete.
I got mine of ebay for $30 so if it's too late to accept family one just grab a cheapy of ebay, bubs will most likely only be in for a couple of months tops. I plan to buy all new linen and matress for it anyway and its already been thoroughly washed once. lol
Good luck

We had Oliver in his pram bassinet next to our bed for the first 3 1/2 weeks. From then on he slept in his cot, which is also in our room. He will stay in our room for a while - likely until he moves to a bed as I know I won't be bothered dismantling the cot to get it out our bedroom door. By then hopefully #2 will go into the cot.

I really couldnt stand having Ben in our room.. any noise he made i got up etc.. i was not getting any sleep myself.. and DH had to get up to go to work so i didnt want to feed in bed either.. So.. wiht the next baby straight into its own room.

We have had Madeleine in our room since birth. She was in a bassinette and then co-slept with us until a week ago. Now she is in her cot next to our bed (side removed, pushed against our mattress, brakes on).
Madeleine has slept through from 8 weeks old.
We tried her in her own room for a week or so but she woke up several times a night.
If we all sleep through, it works so well with us, we're not tired then and such a happier family!

Ds was in his cradle in my room, and then a cot in my room until he was about 10 months old. Transition wasn't a probalem for him
This time round we are using a pram with a bassinette attatchment and bubs will sleep in there in our room at night until he grows out of it. He willsleep in the pram but in his room during the day so I hope transition won't take too long.
Our bedroom isn't big enough for a cot so either way he's in his room (which is only on the other side of the bathroom from us) when he outgrows the bassinette. We have a monitor (the same one form Ds12 can't believe it still works!) too which will make me (and DBF) feel better.
