There is a group in NSW called Lawyers for Companion Animals. Have you already contacted them? They may be able to help, or point you to someone who can. Otherwise the Law Society of NSW has an Animal Law Committee and they too may be able to help. Good luck!
Just read your last post, that is disgusting! The owners attitude is appalling. She needs a serious kick up the butt if she thinks they're not at fault. They're putting animals at risk every day and I would hate for this to happen to anyone else. I would be seeking legal advice for sure.

preggoeggo, I have been reading this is in shock, firstly big hugs for your mum, how awful for her.
secondly, it is just blatant neglect on their part (the dog groomers) "shes a single mum of 3" so what? what does that have to do with anything? if her business practices are so appalingly neglectful she'd better hope she has good insurance to cover her ass.
The thing is that nothing you do now will bring back your mums beloved doggie, but putting this case forward and making a big song and dance out it will hopefully ensure that no one else will have to go through the same thing, also if there arent any protocols or regulations for this industry, maybe it is time there was!

I'm shocked that they would leave a dog unattended on a table while they have lunch that is totally unacceptable! They would have business insurance so definitely take it further so it never happens again, good luck to you!
I often think when I drop my long haired cat off to get get washed and shaved every few months what actually goes on and how are they treated :( now I shudder to think :( I live in western Sydney so I hope to god it's not where my cats booked next week! Though from memory there is no vet next door.
OMG!!! this is terrible. Out to lunch! Holy crap... I don't know what to say. When I said earlier that the dog must have been left for at least a few minutes, the thought did cross my mind the he was forgotten.. But outside eating lunch! Far out.
Sorry that she is single mum blah blah blah... She is about to loose everything. This is terrible.

Omg....,I don't care if she has three kids or thirteen. It's just not good enough. That was your mums fur baby, she shouldn't be in business. Hope your mum is ok and I'm glad you are pursuing avenues for her xx
I would definitely be going to the RSPCA. I would also be starting a campaign and all the local shops, vets, pet shops etc and would be putting up great big posters saying to avoid the groomers because of what they did. I was disgusted with them when it seemed that the stupid idiot left the poor dog there when she went to answer the phone or go to the toilet. That she left him there and went to lunch is so far beyond acceptable. Its not just a dumb, avoidable accident. Its the grossest of neglect.
Your poor mum must just be feeling worse and worse the more information she receives about how her poor furry man died.
I wonder if the person who was at the counter could see the dog? Be good if you could somehow find out who it was for a statement.. That is if they saw what happened.
Lulu the RSPCA were surprisingly unhelpful about the whole thing. They were shocked but said that can only go out and talk to them about it. We said yes because hopefully it will scare them if nothing else.
Mum is persistent that she won't be paid off to stay quiet about this. So she's hoping to be compensated for the cost of replacing the dog (in theory ofcorse - he can't be replaced), recent vet bills and cremation costs only. She won't be entering any kind of deal that requires her to not go public. So we will get it out there.
Efjay the customer possibly could have seen something. We might not need to try and find them though as the salon is being very honest about it all so far.
I am so sorry for your family's loss and I am absolutely horrified at the gross negligence of this "service". Speechless doesnt even begin to describe it.
The fact that they have been so open about what happened says to me they dont even think they really did anything wrong! Surely if they thought they had something to hide they would be a little more guarded about what they say?!
Dont even get me started on the poor me sap story. What a crock! Poor her, she is in trouble with her business, maybe she should have thought about that before she played Russian roulette with your mums furbaby!

So far the groomer has paid for the dogs cremation and a plaque for mums garden where she will keep his ashes.
Mum put the story on a doggie forum and has had a massive response and countless people offering advice and help. She has come across a woman who is currently trying to have laws regulated for pet grooming as it currently doesn't have any. So basically anyone can open a grooming business without any qualification or certification required and they are trying to change that. She hAs been introduced to a barrister who will help with legal advice to make sure she doesn't end up in trouble while getting the story out. And she has met a journalist with ties to magazine, newspaper, tv and radio so hopefully it won't be long til it all starts moving.
Interestingly though, there is a bit of a club for groomers who know of the one we are talking about because she has a bad rep in the industry. So they are sort of rallying to put a plan together to get this place out of business.
The groomer informed mum today that she is reading the forum that this story has been posted on. I think she means the doggie one. And she wants the story corrected because her staff were not outside the building having lunch, they were outside the room having lunch in the lunch room. As if it makes a difference? If they were too far to hear him struggling....
Make sure your mum is careful not to name names on the forum other wise she might end up in trouble herself but it sounds like she is going about it all correctly. Also sounds like this women needs a firm slap to pull her up on her ethics

The groomer has been fined by animal welfare and now have strict guidelines to adhere to. Animal welfare will continue to check in on them to make sure they're doing the right thing.
Mums liaising with a journalist at the moment so I will keep you updated if the story is going to pop up anywhere and your interested :)
I am pleased to hear your mother is using the awful passing of her pet to help push for reform and guidelines in the grooming business. Whenever you go through a horrible avoidable situation it is commendable to try to do something to prevent it happening to someone else. Good on her, i hope it helps her heal a bit knowing she is trying to make the industry better.
Your mum needs to be careful that she doesnt get in some sort of legal pickle over the story and the forum postings that she is making.
