Paddywhacks you reminded me.....I am quite involved in Aus with Old English Sheepdogs (being my breed of choice) and my sister with Weimaraners. Within 'clubs' created through the Canine association within your state, you can contact them and they may also have dogs/puppies available that need to find new homes due to unforseen circumstances such as moving away etc.

My sister has had 2 cases of Weims having to be rehomed for whatever reason and found people that wanted Weimaraners and they took them on. A happy ending for all :)

We got a pup from the local animal shelter, he was the best most intelligent dog, definately didnt regret it

If you decide to go down the greyhound path - ring the Abbey (up Caboolture way - where they have the medieval event in July) - they usually have the greyhound rehousing people there - they should be able to give you the number for them.

Yah for re-homing - when I get a dog I will get one from a dog's home.

We have found two awesome dogs which I have sent emails about so will hopefully get to meet them this weekend! One is a Staffy cross and one a purebred Staffy. They both look gorgeous I cant wait and I feel so glad about getting a dog from a rescue now Ive read more about it. The pet rescue site Paddywacks posted the link to is great- very very sad but helpful for anyone looking for a new companion.

Staffy's are great dogs, I can highly recommend them!

I hope it all works out for you. Don't be disenheartened if they are not the right dogs for you. You will find the dog of your dreams and in turn save another deserving dog's life. It's a great feeling.
All my dogs are rescues and I'm convinced they know that they are getting a second chance. The love they give is unconditional.

Peach.. if you are set on a Staffy there is Staffy rescue www.staffyrescue.org.au They are based in sydney but do interstate adoptions. They have young kids and do very stringent testing on all their dogs. I also have a Staffy, a 12 year old girl who is my shadow. She came from a rescue group in Canberra after being saved from a Sydney pound. She is the most amazing girl. Wouldn't swap her for all the money in the world.

There may be a Staffy rescue in QLD. If you want I can do some investigations.

So the two dogs werent suitable to a home with cats unfortunately :( We will keep looking. Paddywacks, I have looked at the staffy rescue in Brisbane I think one of the dogs was from there actually. Im going to keep looking on pet rescue though as DP is open to a few different breeds(It will be his dog, I would have chosen any old thing already!)

One that wont eat the Cat and one that will be good with the Spawn :) We would love a staffy, the lady at the shelter told me Id be lucky to find 1 in 20 staffy's that are good with cats :( Then maybe a rottweiler or bulldog... Im partial to anything that wont lose hair everywhere. Honestly Id be happy with a bitsa(Bit of this bit of that) as long as it was friendly but DP wants his dog, I have to be fair as every animal we have owned has been mine up to this point :)

Just remember that even short haired dogs lose hair! My Sis' dog loses way more hair than my OES! Surprised!!? I think poodle would be one of the only non-shedding dogs. Some of the 'oodle' breeds may not (depends if they got the good non-shedding poodle gene!) and I bet there would be loads of 'oodles' around.

It kind of looks like you want a bit of a 'tough' dog? KWIM? I was going to suggest a cavalier. They aren't huge, and are supposed to have very nice temperaments.

Like I said a while ago, if you research a certain breed and find one you like or are interested to find more about....contact the Canine association in QLD (That's where you are?)....in WA it's called DogsWest, and get them to put you in contact with specific breed clubs who might have rescues.

Our cats are from Paws and hooves, they do dogs as well and most of their dogs have been socialised with cats. They have a website but I am not sure what states they are in.

MiniMax- I think you might be right about the 'tough dog' thing. DP will be naming it "Chainsaw" so maybe a cavalier or poodle wouldnt fit that name:lol: As for the hair, I understand dogs shed, I dont know if any creature could possibly lose any more hair than my cat though, argh. Thanks so much for all the info you have given me in this thread it has been very helpful!

What about a tough / stocky looking Cattle dog....they need lots of exercise though.....I think! Chainsaw....what a cack!

Rotti's are really sweet...I have a friend who loves them and they've always been so sweet......but scary looking and sounding!

There is a cattle dog next door who's barking drives me insane(and an equally annoying border collie behind us) so am kind of turned off. Also I would like an active dog but no too active if that makes sense? I was bitten my a rottweiler when I was a small child and have always been scared of them but its something I would like to overcome so Im flexible on that one. Lol it dosnt even sound like I want a dog, I do though :)

Oh, you need our last dog! Labrador X Staffy. Brindle colour, staffy head and build, but slightly smaller than a labrador. No issues with the cat, or the chickens. Looked tough, but was really gentle underneath. You could walk past our house on any given day and see behind the gate over our driveway, the dog, the cat and two chickens all sitting down resting together!!

No she was an adult dog that was dumped near a factory where my brother was working. Think she was abused as a puppy though :(
