Pitbulls

You shouldn't pigeon hole any dog. Any breed. But the fact is there are rules and restrictions in place on these dogs that are flaunted. If you want the dog, then make sure you stick by the rules and give everyone around it, whether they live in the same household, or up the street, a chance to be safe should the worst situation happen and the dog snaps (and when I say snaps, I mean crack the ****s, not bite). If the dog is correctly confined then if it does have a "moment", the people around it should still be safe and the owners can then decide on the dog's fate.

What I'm finding, in conversations outside of here, is that a lot of dog lovers do not like these types of dogs, and this exists quite comfortably with their stance that these dogs are actually the victims of human ego, irresponsible breeding and training and the kinds of people who keep up the demand for these dogs. Just because some of us avoid these dogs and don't believe the BREEDS have a place in society because their gruesome purpose is exinct, the DOGS, themselves, deserve so much better than what life has dealt them with the irresponsible people who won't desex them, don't register them and take pride in having aggressive dogs. Being the proud owner of an aggressive dog, a dog that looks aggressive, or a dog that is reputed to be aggressive (even if your own dog of that breed is not) is just an alarming thing that drags an innocent dog's life into someone else's egotistical drives. It puts them in danger, now, of being destroyed because a neighbour may have a grudge against such an owner.
Dog lovers I know don't like these breeds because there are plenty of other dogs one could adopt without perpetuating the breeding of dogs that attract bad attitudes. It's not fair on the dogs themselves. There are just so many great dogs that fit every other bill an individual or family could need, so why chase a restricted breed? And then why choose not to desex? (not saying all owners of these dogs do, but clearly enough of them do).
Dunno, it conflicts me, and there is not much that's happy about a dog's life when it is lived behind bars, muzzles and fluoro plastic collars :(

I wouldn't register as a pit bull because of all of the regulations that go with it. There is no way that a council officer could tell me that my dog was a pit bull rather than a staffy x for example, since pit bulls are only a type of dog and not a breed. I wouldn't get a pit bull, but if I ended up with one as the opening poster did then it sucks for a responsible dog owner to be penalized just because the dog is the wrong breed.

IMO, the regulations surrounding pit bulls is largely ineffective and has been implemented to please the general public. People that have dangerous dogs, that don't train them, leave them chained up all day bored, don't desex etc are never going to register these dogs and therefore won't be subject to any of the muzzle/fencing etc requirements. Meanwhile, people trying to do the right thing by registering them are lumped with all these restrictions.

what about the dog that attacked a boy yesterday? i noticed on the news this morning that they never mentioned the breed. funny thing about that, it was a rottie. i bet if it was a pitbull or a staffy itd be all over the news.

i have my staffies registered, funnily enough.. they are not registered under a dangerous breed dog, even after i queried it.

id love to see the dog catcher try and seize my dogs. he wouldnt need to be scared of the dogs thats for sure!!!!!

but if you don't register your pit bull, then you run the risk of someone reporting you (a neighbour, friend, family member)- and by the dog being unregistered- you are giving the council the power to destroy your dog. they are now able to put to sleep any unregistered pit bull.
just on a side note, i think anyone who does not register their pet with their local council is irresponsible, not matter what the breed.

What I keep coming back to is why in the world would you decide to get a dog that is so dangerous and restricted...there are a stack of other breeds to choose from, why knowingly pick a dog that is a risk to you and other people? It worries me greatly that people could choose to get a pitbull and lie about what it really is.

im scared - and i mean scared - of jack russells etc. there has been so many times ive been snapped/growled at by a dog like that, so for me, i wouldnt go out and buy a breed like that.

my staffies are babies, we nurse and cuddle them like they are babies. to us they are so beautiful.
it makes me really sad when we are walking down the street to see peoples reactions to them. and it makes me sad when people make an assumption about our dogs when they dont know their personality.
yes the stigma attached to these type of dog breeds are bad, but when we are walking down the street, the aggressive dogs are the little ones. my dogs dont even bat an eyelid at any other dog, other than to play with them on the beach.

Does it really matter what breed the dog is?

What matters is there are rules and regulations set in place to try and avoid any dog attacks, they may not be as effective as we all think they should be but something has to be done doesn't it.......or do those of you who think it's all a waste of time think nothing has to be done?? This all came about in the news after a poor innocent child lost her life. No amount of regulations, restrictions or what not will bring that dear child back - but there has to be something in place to try and stop this happening.

I think it's simple really, register your dog, do the right thing find out what you need to do for your dog. If there are any particular requirements for the breed you have etc. Be a responsible dog owner (big dog, small dog, brown dog, black dog whatever!!). You have a problem with the restrictions for your breed then perhaps you shouldn't have that particular dog in the first place or you shouldn't have an issue following the requirements. We can't stop those doing the wrong thing but I guess everyone hopes some requirements, tough penalties etc will decrease the numbers of those not being responsible. Even if you train your dog properly, walk it etc if you choose not to register a dog and follow any specific requirements then you are not being a responsible dog owner.

Think it's not effective or not fair...............come up with a better idea.

I'm wary of all dogs. I've been chased/attacked 3 times...and yes, they were all small yappy dogs. I think the reason people are afraid of bigger dogs is simple; a jack Russell does not have the physical capacity to maul you to death.

Not really. I guess one could in theory...but a jack russell will let go if hit, unlike the dog that killed this little girl. A jack russell could run past grown adults and bite a child, but it'd be removed pretty quickly. Grown adults were not even able to remove the pitbull from the child. I guess, if you left a very small baby alone with the jack russell, for an extended period of time (more than two minutes, say), then it could be possible. But I think there are much deeper issues afoot if a baby is being left unsupervised for long enough for that to happen full stop, let alone with an animal.

I do agree that all dogs - jack russell, pitbull - need to be well trained, controlled and supervised.

Maybe not to death, maybe to death. But it could do some serious injury. That's why we put our spoodle to sleep. We didn't want to be "those" people on the news. We didn't want a child with a scarred face because we didn't do something about our dog. And we didn't want to subject him to a life where he was locked behind a door, to be waved at and walked under the cloak of darkness (we couldn't find a muzzle small enough for his face). And we looked at different options for him. Rehoming him where kids weren't going to be around. Setting him up at the airport as a sniffer dog (he was smart). But the fact is, nobody wants an aggressive dog. It took me a long long time to live with our decision. But I look at my daughter and her beautiful face and I know that not only did we do the right thing by her, but we also set our damaged dog free.

I really dont see why people have an issue with registering their dogs. if you stick to the rules your dog will have a chance at a happy life, if not, you risk it being destroyed. That's cruelty. And only the animals owner can be blamed for that.
