EDD Dates???

Just got back from midwife appt and am a little confused...

I have had three U/S and the first two at 7 and 9 weeks said I was due 25/26 Sept and the 12 week one said 21st... I know that there isn't much difference but Doc told me to go by the 21st and midwife is going by 25th????

Anyone else had this???

I realise that they are often not the same dates.... which one do you go by??

My midwives go off the most recent u/s. I think it really depends on your carer. And most babies won't be obliging enough to come on their EDD anyway

Apparently the earlier u/s have more accurate dates because they are before major growth spurts, BUT having said that most u/s are between 5-10 days of each other and is why they aren't always an accuate estimation for your EDD. Generally your LMP would be the best date to go by. I unfortunately don't know my LMP but know within a week, and my first u/s is 13 weeks, so I am just going by an estimate, I say that I am due at the end of October/early November. HTH!

I go by the one that gives me the most time before they consider induction, but for me anyway there was only 1 day difference between my LMP and the ultrasound date. The midwives also went by that date.

My doc is using the u/s date, which is exactly a week after my LMP date. Don't know how that's possible, coz I was in Sydney with a girlfriend at the doc's supposed time of conception!! My LMP makes much more sense...oh well, just got to go with the flow!

I did what Astrid said last time, even through my LMP & early scan date was the 1st of June I went by my older scan date the 5th of June when it came time for induction, so I would have longer. In the end I was induced on the 16th of June and that was after pushing it back 4 days. I would much rather go through a natural start to labour than every have an induction again, thats why I am happy not to have an official EDD yet...

Take your date that gives you the most time. I know it's exciting thinking baby is coming sooner and we all want them sooner than later, but by going on your own dates (ideal) or the latest dates, you and baby will be better off and less likely to have an induction too soon...

You are most likely to be offered an induction if you are post-dates (remembering that it’s considered a full-term pregnancy between 38-42 weeks), if your Ob ‘thinks’ you have a big baby / small pelvis or if there are health issues detrimental to either mother or baby. If all is well, there may be several reasons why baby hasn’t come yet. Your baby simply may not be ready – the due date may have been miscalculated by mother or machine. Ultrasounds are notoriously inaccurate for pinpointing the day of birth (around 3-5% of babies are born on their ‘due date’). They acknowledge that they are plus or minus 7 to 10 days either side of the estimated due dates. This is because they calculate these dates based on mathematics and averages, not your own baby and the unique rate at which he or she grows. Even first trimester ultrasound can be inaccurate by 5 days either side.

Babies can be born from inductions unexpectedly premature (i.e. were not as advanced for dates as ultrasound detected) based on miscalculated due dates and then may have breathing problems resulting in artificial breathing assistance which is not a pleasant experience for all involved. They may also be more prone to infection.

Another reason baby might not have arrived on time is that occasionally the problem is anxiety or stress in the mother resulting in the slow onset of labour. Adrenaline in the system is not helpful to oxytocin production. You might be familiar with the ‘flight or fight’ response we have as humans. If we don’t feel safe, our bodies don’t want our babies to come until we are in a safe place and can ‘let go’.

Because this is an IVF baby, there was never mistaking my dates. Even then my 12 weeks u/s put my EDD as the 29th of March instead of the 17th of April, so it was way out. My Dr says 18th of April going by the LMP, but by date of conception, it's the 17th.

Officially, on all my paperwork, it's the 18th to give us the most time possible before induction as well!

Kelly - you are right I wanted to go by the earlier date so that I could have my baby earlier, but if it's not ready thn that would be bad...

I guess I will just start saying end of Sept for Due day and that I am around the 15 week mark!!!

Mel, there's not much more than five days between the dates which isn't a lot when you think about it. Maybe you can tell people it's the later date so you don't get driven mad by phone calls when bub doesn't arrive on the earlier date =)

I'm one of those lucky ones (like Sush) who because of IVF know exactly the date on which the baby was conceived. At every ultrasound he has been spot on for dates according to the initial calculations. However, it's his due date today and he still isn't here for reasons probably known only to himself =) I guess this is an example of them having their own timetable, in spite of every calculation being correct.

Im going off my 12wk u/s date as it correspond with the only time we could have concieved. I knew my 5wk u/s dates were incorrect.

My sonographer said you always go from the first scan.

My EDD changed from 15 July (LMP EDD - this is what I calculated myself) to 21 July (date they got from first scan). I use 21 July.

Any scans I've had after that always show various different dates whenever they measure bones etc. But they don't change it again. 21 July is it!

They still keep my LMP EDD on record though.

I think the problem with goin gof your LMP is they go off your cycle being 28 days. I have worked out my date to be the 28th of October but the midwife is saying the 22nd of October. Not a big difference but I would rather the longer date. I will be requesting that I have a dating scan done next week at my first visit with the Ob.
