salsa - sorry, can't help you there. :dunno:
ok, since this thread, I have been craving a hot dog big time! So today I made one at home. The hot dog itself tasted like the Wendy's one, so did the bun, but the cheese didn't :( So now I'm not satisfied. Oh, and I also made myself a yummy milkshake too, that was even better than Wendy's!
Thanks ren, I won't be happy till I get one now!
Jodi :cryinglaugh: :cryinglaugh: sorry haha!
I can't wait to make my own dogs and shakes at home..... i'm yet to get my next craving for them! I was turned off after me worrying about damn Listeria....... I wonder if i'll get the craving again?? rather turned off....
Ooooooh yum ow I seriously am craving a thickshake....lucky I have a thickshake maer at home! Ive had hotdogs a few times, but made them myself. Im pretty sure they are fine as long as it's piping hot.:D
Ren, Snuggels will be fine :)
Oh my ... I lived on soft-serve ice-creams with dd :o and had this totaly weird craving for feta also. I did not know then that I was not suppose to eat those stuff. I have been craving feta this time too, but has stayed clear so far .. on the soft-serve front .. I have discoverd something better ............
FROZEN YOGHURT SOFT SERVE  I am a naughty mommy!!!!
Didi - that is a very sad and unlucky thing to happen!!
Oh Ren - you're so like me when I was pregnant... I'm sitting here smiling to myself, thinking yep, that was me!!!
I would steer on the side of caution and not touch anything like that. Me personally, I had no cold meats, no pre-made salads (especially coleslaw), I washed all fruit and veg thoroughly, no soft serve icecreams, no sausages or hotdogs, no eating from places like Sizzler (buffets)... I was just very cautious. Yet, I have friends who'd eat whatever they liked and they were fine too.
If you have leftovers, make sure you zap them in a microwave so they're steaming hot and don't eat anything that's more than 24 hours old, just to be sure. ;)
I had a dream last night about being at Macca's and really wanting a thickshake with lots of cream and chocolate sauce on top and arguing with myself whether I should have it or not! LOL The power of suggestion!
Anyone know if it's ok to have a Chicken burger from Maccas?? I really want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But what about the lettuce, is that not ok??
 i just had an image of myself washing my lettuce with a water bottle and putting it back on the bun, hahahaha. Now that's how much I want it!!!!
anyone?? It's almost lunch time....mmm....
I would have the chicken burger and not think twice. It can get a bit silly avoiding everything and I ate all burgers last time. Damn I feel like a Big Mac and shake now!! xo
Sorry to be a dampner but be careful of DK - I have watched them a few times how they test the temperature of the soft serve - they serve a bit onto a drink lid - put the wire thing in and get the reading - AND PUT IT BACK IN THE MACHINE!!! I have seen it happen at 2 different stores.
Yes, listeria is rare - but how would you feel if that one time you indulged, something bad happened?????
It really is a personal decision you need to weigh up for yourself. Don't want to be sombre and scary, but it is true - so please take care - 8 months is not that long to avoid it if you can!!!
OK, I'm a naughty mummy. I ate Feta, Salami, Ham,... everything. I just made sure it was really fresh (I bought it from the deli and aksed to have it cut freshly from the ham/salami, so it hadn't been sitting around for a long time). Then again, I always do that, because I just find it tastes much better and this way I can get them to cut it really thinly.
I didn't eat Sushi or anything containing raw eggs.
As one lady said earlier, the risks are very low. In the whole of Australia, only 60 cases are reported per year. Most of them in people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or those suffering cancer. Only around 10 cases each year affect pregnant women. But, of those, around 50% end in the death of the fetus.
Around 10% of the population carry the bacteria without any apparent health consequences.
So I personally made a decision to eat what I would normally eat based on the fact that the risk is very low. But it is a decision everybody has to make for themselves.
In my opinion, there are other everyday risks we take that are higher than this. And women in Europe, where cold meats and all types of cheeses are a staple have healthy babies, too.
One thing I never understood was people who would chastise me for being so negligent but in the same breath promoted the "safety" of drugs during labour and elective cesasreans...
So my philosophy was to live life like I normally would. I didn't avoid everyday things like peanuts or cold meats. But, I did totally avoid any non-essential medications (I didn't take a single panadol while pregnant) or other things that I didn't deem part of a normal diet. Having grown up in Europe, Ham, Salami & Soft Cheeses are an everyday thing for me...
But that's just my personal opinion. I'm not advising anybody to adopt this.
So, to summarise, I think you're probably quite fine after having consumed 1 thickshake.

if you want a thickshake when you are out, just get one from an ice-cream shop and ask them not to use soft serve, but instead ice-cream. Not much taste difference and a lot safer. I would personally stay well clear of getting soft serve and hot dogs anywhere.
Mc Donalds are the safest as they have the most strict cleaning schedules that they must do and are accountable for. My DH works with some of the above frachises, and i would say to be very carefull!!!! They very much rely on the girl behind the counter using good hygiene practices. All the salad ingredients from Mc Donalds comes in pre-washed and is pretty good! But again its personal choice.
Hot dogs are fine, but you have to rely on the somebody else ensuring that the hotdog is cooked to the correct temp. Most places heat them, and then hold them at an acceptable temp, but you dont know how long they have been sitting there. Safest to buy some and boil the crap out of them at home and have them then!
I know it comes down to personal choice, and i am not saying what is right and wrong, but just saying info that i know- the more knowledge we have the better informed our decisions are!
Good luck girls and if you need more info on Listeria - food safety victoria has a great website will heaps of up to date info.

I've had maccas chicken burgers a few times through pregnancy, not lately as I've lost my appetite again LOL.
I also quite often have soft serve ice cream, I usually have an iced chocolate from the donut/ice cream shop with soft serve & heaps of whipped cream or I'll have a single soft serve ice cream in a cone. Sometimes I just have to have it!! haha
I havent touched sushi (MY FAVOURITE!!) its sooooo hard! I also havent had any soft cheeses, only 1 glass of wine, no deli meats etc etc etc so I dont think I've done too bad :)
I have eaten heaps of maccas sonce being pregnant - way more than usual. I am pretty careful with what i eat but if you are even unsure or get a bad feeling- just dont eat it :)
Well I had the McChicken and is was YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mmmmmm........I'm glad I'm stranded without a car today or I'd be going to get another one, The chicken was really hot so I felt good coz it was fresh.
I never thought about cold meats, all I've been having is packaged ham from the supermarket, so its not out all day and then cut, its in little plastic vacummed compartments - is that ok to eat?! I have been so off my food, I find it so difficult to find lunch to eat but ham sandwiches are getting me through it!!! I miss mayo - avoiding it cos they use raw egg I think...hardest thing I've had to give up!
I think you can eat mayo?? As long as it's not the whole egg one??
