I would always just take this as a fun thing to do while waiting for the 9mths to go by, It could cause more harm then good if we take it too seriously. The power of suggestion is a powerful thing, if we start believing in it too much then we might just make it happen.
-
When I was pregnant I tried it and it said I was having a girl, but I had a boy. My friend tried it and it said she was having a boy but she had a girl. I just tried it on my wrist now an it said a girl, then I stopped it and tried again and it said boy, then I stopped it and tried again and it said nothing. I tried it on my (empty) belly too and nothing. I find it quite interesting.
I tried it over my Dh's belly to see if it was just a magnetic thing but nothing happened at all. I'm going ot go get a longer string and try it on both of us and see what happens.
-
I can't get it to work on my or my partner's hands. It worked on my Mum's and sister's - well it got my Mum's kids right, my sister doesn't have any yet. It is starting to freak me out now. I know it's just superstition but it's wierd why it does nothing on my hand.
-
I saw this thread the other day so I checked out some more information on the internet... sounds very interesting!! Anyway I had a go with my wedding ring and a piece of string and did the wrist test. It was quite freaky how the ring moved, paused, moved paused and then moved and paused once more.
It came out as girl, girl, boy...
I had an early m/c last year so I'll have to wait and see if this comes true... hopefully it is a sign of babies on the way for me! :p
-
Oooo Milka wouldn't it be lovely if it comes true, all the best :)
-
well, just to double check.... i did it again on my hand and got definate back and forth Boy(my son darren who i lost at 18 weeks, then it sort of does a bit of a back and forth and a bit of a circle (my early mc maybe) then definate circles Girl (my daughter i lost at 35 weeks, then it does the bit of both thing again ( i did have another VERY early mc, but i am thinking it may just be it changing directions) and then goes back to the back and forth for ages and then just keeps swapping boy/girl/boy girl and doesnt come to a stop. So i dont know if, i am now preg with a boy or if it just keeps going through my babies i have lost, not counting it on my hand until i have it. And maybe it means after this preg i will have another girl, but i am not planning another pregnancy, unless of course this pregnancy goes well without any hitches, it may ease my mind enough to try to have another baby, but at the moment, we are going to count our selves very lucky if after 4 attempts we get one baby, and probably not try again.
When i do it on my tummy now, it does swing back and forth, so we will have to wait and see!!!
-
I am not clear on what happens with a m/c, if it does count m/c over the hand then my m/c may have been a girl:dunno:
-
if you do it on your belly and you are not preg, will it just hang or if it does move , poss preg does anybody know???
-
Hi, this has worked out for all of mine, and if you do it on your partner it shows the same as yours. The children that you have together, not ones from a previous relationship.
I have done this on alot of friends, and family, and for me. Everytime I have had a m/c, my list on the hand gets longer, as does my DH's. lol.
The way I do mine is place it on the wrist then lift it, let it do its thing , then place it on the wrist again, and do this until each child is shown the last time it will not move. The only time I let it keep spinning or going back and forth is when it is above the belly when pg.
-
i did the ring thing on a friend and it went girl and then boy with out stoping , has andy one done people that have had twins , i am sure that is what it ment
-
On the belly when pg a few years back it showed girl boy girl, With the u/s it showed twins, not long after (a couple of days) I went thru a m/c, and I would place it over my belly and it showed three then as the bleeding got heavier it showed two over the belly, after the D & C showed nothing. Afterwards found out that my Aunty was pg with triplets and m/c one to have twins back when she was younger. She had multiple sets of twins.

Did my test yesterday at the Baby Shower, but I'm not convinced that it was conclusive...
It started out doing a side to side thing, but then changed quite quickly and smoothly into a circle.
I'm thinking about doing it again myself - did everyone else hold the ring themselves or have someone else do it?
-
Nettie, I get the same results whether I do it or someone else.
-
Just wanted to remind everyone that this is 'just for fun'. There is no meaning behind it, just freaky sometimes.
So those of you getting mixed results or nothing happening I don't want you to be feeling upset.
WE are in control of our lives not a ring on a string ;) Just good fun.
GOOD LUCK TO THOSE TTC and all the best for those who are expecting their little surprises soon....let us know if the ring/needle was right :P
I am still getting a 100% success rate BTW...still spooky.
-
I tried to do it myself, but couldn't tell which way the ring was swinging because it was kind of moving towards me (if you get what I mean).
I'm ok with it though as I wasn't taking it very seriously and I don't think fate wants me to know what I'm having before the birth!
Guess I'll just have to wait and see!
-
I have tried this earlier in my pregnancy and it neither circled or swinged (is that a word?) It just rocked a little bit then stopped. Maybe I didn't do it right. I'm going to try it again.
-
Nettie - Try with a needle and thread to maybe see the direction a bit more clearly.
Danniellabella - Give it a bit of time hovering above your tummy even if its not completely still, until it slowly starts moving like a magnet is controlling it in a definite direction...its strange and fun.
-
Did the ring test a couple of weeks ago and just found out the sex yesterday via U/S.
The ring's movements were very clear but as it turns out it was wrong.
-
Do you put the ring through the string or do you tie the string to the ring?
-
Danni - String through the ring or the eye of the needle, no tying....you can use a strand of your hair(if long enough) with the ring to really go traditional. I have done it every which way and the results are always the same.
Principessa76 - Shame it didn't work this time....all just good fun anyway. Congratulations either way!! BTW sometimes even U/S are wrong too. I know some one who was told girl (had all pink stuff ready) and had a lovely boy HEHE. I've heard of the opposite too where someone is told boy and a pink princess comes out ;)
-
wow i did this with my partner and it came up doin circles... so does that mean im havin a girl???
-
Hi ladies,
my mum always used to do the ring test when we were young, she has 7 girls and 1 boy and also a loss and the ring shows every one in order....
I always done it with a result of boy, boy, girl...we had the boys then I had my tubes tied. I had a reversal in June 06 and fell pregnant in Sept 07 but unfortunately miscarried in Nov.. a few days later done the test and it now indicates boy, boy, girl, girl. You can imagine how much it freaked me out !!!!
I dont know if it is just superstition and I dont rely on it but it makes me feel a little better and gives me hope for the future. And its a bit of fun.
I always let it do its thing for a bit then hold it in my fist then let it go again and so forth untill it stops. Ive heard if it does both directions (undecided) its twins !!
-
hi there! i am really interested in doing this test and we are very curious as to what we might be having this time, even tho i am only 4-5 weeks pregnant, do i have to be a certain amount of weeks along or can i test now? also do i have to use a wedding ring (as i am yet to have one!!) or can i just use one of my other rings? and also do i just use string or cotton? please all the specifics if anyone can just so i can do it as accurately as possible!!
Thanks a lot xo

Hi... This is an interesting thread. I couldn't wait to try it.
I used my wedding band with a peice of my hair. Firstly I placed the ring on my wrist, lifted it, and it went in a straight line, for ages too, then it slowed down & started circling then it slowed down & finally stopped. It did this numerous times & got the same response. I also did what Cheryl said & placed it back onto my wrist between each swing & still got the same response. Boy then girl then nothing. I also placed it over my belly (I am 4-5weeks pregnant), the first time in showed both a straight line, then a circle, then a straight then circle and so forth. I took time out to teach it yes & no, then asked if I was having twins. It said yes at first, then the following 4 times it said no. I then put it over my tummy again, and it showed Boy (straight line). I repeated this numberous times & it continued to show boy. So it looks like i'm having a boy then girl. Yay... Perfect.

I used to watch my mum and her friends do this test all the time. I am one of nine kids and it was so amazing to watch my mum do this on herself. It would go through all of us kids then stop dead! When my older sisters started having babies, there we were, back around the kitchen table. All came true too. One day we tried it on my neice and it did nothing, she was mortified but then we realised she hadn't even had AF yet! She did it years later and has come true so far. It has been correct for me too. It is amazing how it doesn't work over your tummy if you aren't currently preg.
mumisabella - I have used all sorts of rings and I can even remember my mum using a sewing needle once! You can use hair or cotton.
-
Hi ladies,
my mum always used to do this test when we were small also, as I mentioned in an earlier post I lost my little one at 9 weeks in Nov and a few days later I done the test and it showed an extra girl...
AF is due today for me and Ive been doing the test over the last couple of days over my tummy and its saying boy girl back and forth very quickly (my DH is gonna read this and think I`m nuts!)
does this mean twins? and does it really not work if you are not pg ? dont want to get my hopes up on a wives tale. I try not to take it to seriously but Im a bit obsessed.
-
onemore - I did notice that when I was trying to fall pg with my DS it would sometimes move when I was close to being due for AF, then a week later, obviously not being pg it would be still again. This was over my tummy by the way. It should always work on your palm. But you are right, it is an old wives tale. You might be better of doing a proper test if AF is due today. Good luck!!!
-
I just tried this with my hair and wedding ring, i got circles, then up and down then circles again.
Does this mean girl, boy ,girl.?
I have my scan on wednesday and am hoping to find out the sex then.
-
Hi tan, yea thats meant to be the way it goes. So you have the girl boy so far it will be interesting to see if your scan is the same..
Olimoo- yea Ive been doing it over my tummy and it goes both ways, when I do it over my palm/wrist it goes through the whole process boy, boy, girl, then sort of confused circle then straight without stopping. Maybe its telling me what will be eventually...
I just feel like everytime AF comes its a reminder of what could have been if I had`nt miscarried.
makes it all real again.. sorry for rambling
-
Ooh, this is interesting that it seems to actually work!!
I did it over my hand and it says girl, boy, boy, girl. Yay! Perfect!
Then I did it over my tummy and it said girl (I'm 7DPO today). Jeez, I hope it's right!!
-
i have been testing this theory out this morning and have used a piece of my hair and just one of my rings. well over my wrist it says girl, girl, boy and then another girl i think. i got tired so i stopped so not sure if nemore are coming after- i hope so, the more the betta!! i gather that the 1st girl was my Isabella that i lost last year, so i tested it over my belly and it starts off back and forth (boy) for a short time and then goes into circular movements (girl) for a long time. so maybe twins?? but the boy doesnt swing for long so maybe its just getting warmed up! neways, it has been the same each time i test so who knows!! i will be happy as long as my bub is healthy and my pregnancy goes well with no complications. i guess its just good fun isnt it!!
-
hi all
my father inlaw uses this method to see the gender of birds and it is 100 percent right every time he does it over the bird tummy and it does its thing none have ever turned out wrong it is a good thing to see i have never done it with hayden but i might try and do it with this buby when i get to 12 weeks we are not going to find out the sex but might give this ago!

Yep, the ring test was right for me. It said a boy and I had a boy. I'm meant to have a girl next.
I'm not sure if anyone else has said this but it also works on men too. A friend of mine did the ring test on both me and my husband and they both came out the same - a boy and then a girl! (Just make sure he hasn't fathered any children that you dont know about before doing this - it could make things a little awkward).
-
i didnt know it worked on men-do you just hold it over the palm of their hand?
-
LOL Dayl, yeah that could make things a bit awkward! lol.
I did it lots of times while pregnant just to make sure but the first time it showed boy (straight line) and every other time it showed girl (circles) which she is.
I used a string with a weight type of bookmark or a ring on a string. It doesnt seem to matter what as long as it is weighted.
In the past I have had it done and it showed g,b,g,g,b,g,g...... lol that is a lot of kids for someone who only has their first at 33! While pregnant it only showed the one.
-
I did the test on DH today (with his wedding band) & it showed exactly the same as it did on me. Boy, Girl then stopped. I also put it over his tummy & it didn't move. No matter how many times i've done it today it shows Boy then Girl. Even over my tummy it keeps showing a boy.
-
I can't stop getting enough of this thread....it is freaky too when your partner is getting the same results too over their palm.
-
hi all i wanted to know do you have to be certine weeks preg before you can do the test on you tummy?
Sarah
-
Wow, ok, this is freaking me out!! When I did it over DH's hand when he got home it was exactly the same, girl, boy, boy, girl, then stopped. Now DH who is the world's biggest sceptic and doesn't believe anything was even freaked out by it!! It is really weird. No matter how many times we did it, it was still the same!! Crazyness!
-
Just thought it would be interesting on showing you ladies my results. Before I had my DD's and before I had any m/c's it showed only the following: B, B, G, G.
Upto date now 12yrs later this is my list: B, B, G, G, B, G, G, B, G, G, B, G, B, B, G, B. My DH would have heart failure everytime I did it on him and he saw for him self our list growing after every child and after every m/c. Hugs all.
