Smallgoods companies unfortunately have had problems with listeria in the past, you've probably seen the recalls on TV before. Whilst I do understand it's frustrating it is for good reason. I've seen first hand the sadness that follows from listeria during pregnancy and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. BUT and this is a big BUT like all things I know everyone makes their own evaluations when it comes to risk and if you're not bothered I understand that too.
If you do get cravings for ham I was told by my GP that the best cold meat to eat is ham off the bone and get them to slice it fresh, cold meats that are stored sliced are higher risk as they are subject to open air and the fridges are opened and closed so the surface area can warm a lot quicker than a whole piece of meat. I had stacks of ham off the bone the xmas before DS but I steered clear from previously sliced deli meats.
Same goes for sushi, if you know a reputable establishment that can make fresh sushi on the spot rather than previously made that is a lot safer too. Of course making sure the fish is not high in mercury.
I've been terrible as far as eating goes! I've had soft cheese, maccas lettuce, a little bit of wine, lots of frozen cokes and even salami!!!!
I was speaking to someone who used to work in a cheese factory and her job was to swab the cheeses for bacteria, she said in all her years there she never found listeria.
Don Strass all the way!!!
Yep like Rouge said, that's the only way I've eaten ham, hence it only being once or twice, as you've got to have pretty much the first slices of it lol. I doubt DF would be happy with me buying legs of ham to only eat the first few bits
As for the sushi, I was led to believe that the risk there is with the rice having sat there for a bit so unless they're boiling that rice fresh for you it's not good? I've been craving inari and vego rolls like mad, so we've been making our own at home. SO good!
I also think there's a lot of personal choice here. Some people are okay with a bit of cola every now and then and a bit of maccas lettuce every now and then (me) and others are okay with a little bit of wine and beer, which I'm personally not (but I'm so not bothered by that choice, kwim?) what in trying to say is that my soft cheese and cola may be unacceptable to some people to whom some of their choices may differ from my own. I think as long as we can weigh up the risks and make sure we are informed in what we are doing, make the choices on a case to case basis even, we should be fine :)
I havent read all the responses but i like to fry my ham before eating it sometimes. I think that should get rid of some listeria? if you are craving for ham.
My midwife last year told me that she used to give women a post-birth Guiness (sp), as it's very good for them and for breastfeeding. So there you go...another vote for dark beers!
When I was pregnant (3 times) I also ate foods on the forbidden list: Camembert, sushi to name a few. But I don't eat red meat (mammals) so didn't eat ham or most deli meats... I also didn't eat pre-sliced chicken.
I think every pregnant women just needs to read up about Food poisoning and Listeria and then trust her mumma instincts. But do the reading first ;) Google it... read... takes only a few minutes. Everyone should understand the basics of food hygiene but it is especially important for pregnant women. I also think that just giving women a "Forbidden Foods" list is over simplifying the issue and creating a false belief that if a pregnant woman simply avoids all the foods on the list she will be ok. Wrong. I think she needs to understand why and how food... almost any food... can become contaminated. THEN the woman can apply her knowledge to the many and varied scenarios she is presented with: "She is at a wedding and hasn't any idea how the food has been stored and prepared... should she risk it? What can she eat instead?" or "a friend is holding a BBQ and offers her a platter of cheese... how long has the platter been sitting on the buffet table? Is it worth the risk?"
Arm women with real knowledge and not just over simplified lists... that's my soap box argument for the day!
ETA: my last bout of really bad food poisoning came from eating a piece of Flinders bread. No it wasn't the filling: avocado. DH had peanut butter on his and was also very sick. It was the bread... bread! Who would have thunk it!!!??? Lucky I wasn't pregnant!
I should add that I've worked in catering and done food hygiene courses and believe that most people are terribly oblivious to some pretty basic practises that could lead to serious health risks. If you didn't listen during your cooking classes at school then don't put it off any longer... you do need to know this stuff and not just rely on a list.
I accidently gave myself food poisioning when I was 38 weeks preg....not from meat, or cheese or etc...but from soy milk! I was so busy making my banana smoothie in my pregnant foggy brain that I didn't notice that the soy milk had pretty much solidified in the carton!
God I puked so much I thought I was going to die! :-P
Good on you for satisfying your wicked craving!!!!
I have been off ham so no ham for me!
I am absolutely CRAVING sushi and have been for weeks but just too scared to buy any  need to be braver like you I think!!
I eat ham....but I usually have it on a toasted sandwich. I think in Australia, we are pretty safe from listeria. Our meat is very fresh and the supermarkets store it really well. Just make sure you eat it fresh and not slices that have been in the fridge for a week :)
I am absolutely craving it too!!! I gave into my craving at 14 weeks and had a couple of rolls (not raw fish ones tho) and ended up at the emerg dep that night with a bleed. Im positive eating sushi had nothing to do with it.. i think it was just the universe telling me to watch it!! :) Made me super paranoid tho!!
Actually that's not really true about us being safe here in Australia. A big wellknown Australian made smallgoods company had a bad contamination scare a few years ago.
Yep and also with regards to the cheeses it's not necessarily how it's made but how it's stored after it leaves the factory. So whilst they may test fine in the factory during travel may not be as stringent or the recipient of the goods may not store correctly etc.
Some great advice in this thread. Loving your work girls.
PZ yep it is mostly the rice, I know a girl who used to go to her local and request her sushi was made with fresh rice, so the owner/chef would let her know when he was making a new batch of rice and do it that way.
I remember being told by my GP if you're unsure don't do it. If you can't trust an establishment because you don't know them or they don't look clean then don't eat there. Don't eat out of bain-marie's, buffets or at someone's house if the food has been left out.
TBH I think a lot of what is recommended is a lot like Bath says common sense, and if you've done any kind of food handling course you'll know that this is how we should all act around food, pregnant or not.
I dont do the cold meats (only ham in a toasty) or soft cheeses BUT I have had a tub of Taziki (sp?) dip with carrott sticks and I have also eaten my fair share of Maccas lettuce! I also have a glass of Iced Coffee Ice break milk evey morning - I feel off all day if I dont (had to have the same with DD too) and I will have a glass of coke with tea most nights!
Did someone say no cola? Ooops. THAT's my craving! Sitting here with some right now!
I also read somewhere raw mushrooms were a no-go... oops had them last night and the night before for dinner!
We have a bain marie at work, and it basically comes from the kitchen to our kitchenette, where we serve it. I've eaten from it....
Huh? I have never heard of no cola!
I know it is generally considered to be 'unhealthy' but I have been drinking diet cola about once a week, as is usual for me.
We need to chill out and enjoy our pregnancies, and if that includes eating what we want, then so be it!
