Before DD was born I thought the same thing, surely stitches in the belly would heal better than the hoohah. I ended up having an episiotomy for forceps delivery (you can't really tear naturally for that) after a long labour with bub in a bad spot and distressed, and it wasnt that bad. I also had 2 friends who had c/s around 4 weeks before I gave birth and while they both recovered quickly and had a well known excellent ob, I was still up and running around in the gym before them. So yeah while it sucks to have a cut like that down yonder, a c/s is major surgery so will likely (not always I know but that depends on you, bub and the dr) take longer to heal. And DD is only 5 1/2 weeks old now I have no pain and no scarring from my epi -yes I've looked lol!

I guess everyone is different but DD1 was a booked c/s for being breech. We are TTC #2 and I will be doing everything in my power to avoid another c/s. It took me 6 months to fully recover and I am so jealous every time I hear of another friend having a successful VB and looking/feeling awesome. I hated every minute of my recovery as I felt paralysed every time I wanted to do something "normal".
An Epi is not going to be high on my list of things I want to happen but it definitely ranks higher than the c/s.

I have been told its very uncommon to tear or need an epi with subsequent babies, esp if you didnt have one with your first. Obviously there are exceptions as always. I was always terrified of tearing/epi but in the end I worried for nothing - my first I got a graze, my second and third I had nothing. I can remember telling the OB when pushing with Ds2 that I didnt want to because I would tear. He laughed at me and said that if I didnt with Ds1 then I wouldnt with Ds2. He was right!
I think you need to really do your research on risks of both an epi/tearing and a C/S. Id rather take on the slight risks associated with an epi/tearing than with a C/S.

Hi there, I can only comment to the epi as I had a forceps delivery after a very long and difficult labour. Mine healed fine I had no problems with stinging or any type of pain at all afterwards.
It was the hemeroids (long pushing stage before they realised his head was facing the wrong way and no matter what they did he was stuck) and the thrush from the antibiotics ( needed because of the forceps) that was the killer for me afterwards.
Having said that I was petrified of a c section and wanted to avoid one at all costs but then again I was petrified of an epi too just not as much as a csection.
Information is power gather all you need discuss with your dh your birthing plan and options and do what is right for you and your baby.
