Babies are safest behind the passenger seat. Though the middle position seems safer due to the lack of side impact, statistically speaking more children are injured or killed in every other position than the passenger one. It's the least likely area to be hit in an impact and in a direct rear or front impact the passenger seat (and the passenger in it if there is one) prevent the child travelling too far forwards in the event of seat or belt failure and block flying glass. In the middle position if the belt breaks, shears or fails there is only 3mm of glass between your child and the road.
Also, side note but if anyone is wondering what to do if they HAVE to make a journey in an emergency and they don't have enough restraints, you should always leave the lightest passenger loose. There have been several cases of people crashing with an adult loose so the babies can all have seats and the large heavy adult's body being thrown around inside the car at speed has killed or severely injured the children. The lightest passenger is the easiest for a larger adult to restrain in their arms and will suffer lowest damage in an impact (the lighter they are the softer they fall).
