It could be a few things. Do you feel like you have a beach ball between your legs? That is what being engaged feels like.
If it feels like a bruised ache in the joint then chances are it is the beginning of SPD, so a referral to the physio is a good idea, so they can get some pelvic and lower abdo support in place. If your physio says it is normal then do some research. Some Physio's have no idea the difference between normal pelvic aches in pg and SPD. If it is more of a heavy ache then it is a normal late pregnancy ache.
Google Pelvic Girdle Pain. There is a UK physotherapists guide that shows you quite a lot of info and can be very very useful when you are learning what is going on.
In the meantime, keep your legs together as much as possible and avoid doing anything that has them assymetrical. Sit down to get dressed, no standing on 1 leg. Avoid heavy weights as much as possible.
Serenitylee, I don't have anything helpful to add, but just wanted to say that I am experiencing the exact same thing (since about Thursday last week). So thanks for starting this thread - I will be keeping a close eye on the responses. I hope your feel better soon  Thanks for the info, Ali - I will do some Googling now :)
Thanks for that!
It isn't there all the time...like it seems to come and go but I noticed it last week and one day I wont really notice anything and then say the next day I will get out of bed or get off the couch and start walking and will notice that it is quite achy in that area and sometimes when I press on the bony area sometimes it feels bruised but then as I said other days It doesn't ache or feel sore. Only reason I thought I would ask is because a lady in my birthing classes mentioned something that she had which was to do with her hips or pelvis trying to separate? and she had similar symptoms to start with. I am only small though, 165cms and my tummy is not huge and I am only about 63kgs..but weight and height probably have nothing to do with it at all :S
Sambo - That's ok! Hopefully we have nothing to worry about and it is just the joys of being pregnant :D
Unfortunately that complaint is all too common. I have also been getting it. I agree with the advice given previously. I also found that going to my chiropractor helped. In the end tho there is not a lot that can be done, the only permanent relief is after you have the baby.
it does sound like the start of SPD perhaps - and no weight and height dont have alot to do with it i dont think... may be worth a trip to the physio, i am doing this - it started as not too much for me.. but is incredibly painful now....
SL - I am 163cm and was 56kg pre preg. I am still under 70kg at 35.5 weeks. It has nothing to do with your size, more to do with the hormones and the baby's weight on the joint. SPD is when you pelvis is separated more than usual, but still below 9mm separation, which is not as debilitating as DSP (I have a thread about that somewhere) which has put me in a wheelchair for the rest of my pg. The earlier you catch it the less likely it is to get worse. For me it started as feeling like someone had kicked me in the crotch. Generally the best physios to see are womens health or orthopaedic because they do specialise in this sort of thing.
I had SPD with DD2 as well and mine started around the 30 week mark with her. This time it started around 18 weeks and got a lot worse. I had an ultrasound on my pelvic joint to diagnose DSP. My separation at my ultrasound at 29 weeks was 11mm. No matter what anyone tells you pelvic pain like that is not normal, although common, and does need intervention to prevent it getting worse. Provided you can still open your legs when they are symmetrical you wont have problems with a VB.
Thanks for all the info. Today I have no pain at all so bit strange that it just comes and goes but I have an appt with my midwife on Thursday so will definitely bring it up with her then!
yep good idea, mine comes and goes atm... some days good and others a nightmare...
ali - hugs to you... ouch
Ali I hope time goes fast for you so you have bub and then your SPD can get better!
