OK we don't own a heater but we are looking at moving down to Brissie this year and thought while there are some sales at the moment we could pick one up. However heaters have changed since I last got one
So.....
whats the best type of heater to get? I have seen column and oil heaters not sure what the deal is with these - do they get hot on the outside?
Safest?
Are there any kid friendly heaters?

My DH just sent me completely bonkers about a heater. He went on about BTUs and the size of the area. I knew our wall heater was struggling, but I am the kind of person that tries warm clothes and maybe a blanket before I start spending money.
He ended up buying a kero heater - much to this pyrophobes utter dismay, but he was 100% right. It heats the whole house with the doors wide open for ventilation.
Elecy ones dont have good BTUs. We would have needed 2 of the 2000w one we had to do the lounge dining area sufficiently. But I liked it because it was high wall mounted and away from the kids. The bill was painful though. Probably would have been better if my house wasnt so open plan. If its just one moderately sized mostly enclosed room, then it would be perfect.
Oil/column heaters do get hot on the outside.
Hope some of this helped. It really depends on the room you will be putting it into for efficiency.
This might be a really stupid question, but I am from freezing cold Melbourne :rolleyes:......Would there be a heater or split system in the house you are moving to in Brisbane?

Tinkerbell - had really considered having a built in heater. I'm thinking not in Brissie but I could be wrong - has been a while since we lived there - def something to think about
The best heater I ever had was split system ducted. It was love.
It was really expensive too.
Most places in Brissy don't have one. Not like Melbs where every house has one!
The ceramic base column ones are very efficient and hold the heat for ages, but I don't think they're very kid friendly, as the base heats up.
Split systems are fantastic. Ours heats our whole house really well but I only really use it for heating in between seasons. It keeps our whole house at 24 degrees during summer too - even on 46 degree days! One of those would probably be good for Brisbane.:
