8wk ultrasound
Hi Ladies,
Well it is all confirmed and I am 4wks pregnant. How exciting.
I am not sure if this is in the right place, but when you have your 8wk ultrasound (I presume it is 8wks... thats when they told me to book) does it HAVE to be 8wks? I am a little annoyed, I started seeing a FS but ended up falling naturally, and am still seeing the FS (I don't even know why, I was due to start clomid day after I got BFP) they said book for 8wks with him for the ultrasound. So the problem is DP is away for what would be 8 & 9wk mark and I would like him to be there, but it is a case of he just can't change it. when I asked the not so helpful receptionist if 10wks would be ok, she had no idea. None of them have a clue which annoys me. So does it strictly need to be 8wks or is 10 ok?
thanks in advance

Did the FS say what the reason for the scan is?
The most liekly reason I can think of that he has said 8 weeks is that by then you should be able to see a heartbeat, where before 7 weeeks you may not and it could stress you unecessarily.

What did they say the 8wk scan was for? Is there any reason for concern? I didn't have a scan till ~20wks so not much help here but I think most people have one around 12wk so I don't see harm in waiting till then if it is more suitable. 8wk you will be able to see the heartbeat so they might have suggested it for peace of mind, iykwim.

Some Obstetricians ask to do a scan at 8 weeks, as rayray said, you may not find a heartbeat until then. Basically it's a dating scan, plus, they want to see if the pregancy is viable. SOME obstetricians believe that if a heartbeat is found at 8 weeks then it's unlikey a miscarriage will occur. My Obstetrician sees people at 10weeks as he thinks this is a better indication. I would say there is no problem with leaving it till 10weeks, if you are sure of your dates, or within 2 weeks at least, as the 12 week NT scan NEEDS to be within certain dates (12-13weeks I think), therefore the early scan is also to be sure the NT scan is done at the correct time.
Gees, I hope i've made sense>>>>>:D

My first scan was at my first OB appointment at 10 weeks. Like the other ladies have said, a lot of doctors would actually prefer to wait for scans to avoid disappointment if the heartbeat can't be found. Unless there is a medical reason why they want to see you earlier, I can't see why it couldn't wait until 10 or 12 weeks. Your DP will love it. My DH was almost as gobsmacked as I was.
Enjoy your pregnancy!

I had scans at 5 weeks with both of mine (as i can't make a preg test turn positive) and then not till 12 weeks with DS and not til 18 weeks with DD (chose not to have NT scan)

Thanks for your replies, I presume it is just an 8wk scan to just confirm dates etc as they told me I am roughly 4wks from blood tests. I am going to ask the receptionist again if I can make it for 10wks and if it is a problem I think I will cancel it and just go to my GP.

hi mitzy,
You'll probably find because you were on the FS's books already, he's following through with your pregnancy as if you were utd off the clomid.
We did ivf and had a scan at 7 weeks with our FS to check for a heartbeat. I also had 2 to 3 blood tests prior to that through our ivf clinic. But after that scan, we were handed over to an ob.
so i'd ask to book for the 7 week mark if you are feeling anxious, otherwise 10 hsould be fine. and if they say they aren't sure.. ask them to go find out from someone or ask for one of the nurses at your clinic.
by the by, congratualstion!
ps we've also had a scan at 10wks with our ob (first visit) and are doing our NT scan at 12wks.
