Toys for 6 month old

DS will be 6 months old in a few weeks and i think he is getting a bit bored with the toys he has and isn't too impressed with laying around on his play mat anymore. Im trying to work out what would be appropriate for his next stage of development but when you look in the toy store it gets a bit overwhelming.

I would like to know what toys your baby enjoyed at 6 months and possibly why they liked it (bit hard to work out sometimes i know) Can be home made or store bought i just want to get an idea what would be appropriate without the whole commercial aspect at the shop!

My babies have loved water bottles with glitter in them :) You get the 350ml bottles so they aren't too big & put pretty things inside (glitter, ribbon, beads, coloured feathers etc) then superglue the lid down. Lots of fun!
