Has anyone had a clear dressing to heal your wound instead of the usual stitches, staples, glue etc?
My OB mentioned that internal will be dissolving but the outside will just be a clear dressing which will stay on for 2 weeks. I`ve tried googling it but can`t find anything only dressing`s which go over stitches but this isn`t, I`ve just never heard of it before.
I had a c/s with DS and had internal stitching and disolveable external ones with a white dressing (like masking tape) which stayed on for around 10 days I think.
DS has had heaps of heart surgery and has had clear dressing over open and closed wounds. Its called "Op site" as in operation site by the nurses usually, that might just be its "common" name. I wouldnt worry about googling it though - you might see things you cant get out of your head!
Are you worried about being able to see your wound? or worried about not having heard of it before?

I had one of these for Eliza it had a stitch at the end which they unsnibbed just before being sent home about day 5 or 6 and then had a plastic strip over the top which was to stay on till it kinda lifted and came off itself. It was about 15 cms wide and pretty much the length of the insision. My scar is minimal cant really tell no bumping just a fine pinkish line when you try and stretch it apart. Compared to others I have seen I am very happy with mine :)

i have had this and 2 weeks later i took it off and MY GOODNESS every re grown hair down there was ripped out i was balling my eyes out get waxed first just prior. and take it off in bath if i was you.!!!
Recalling my pharmacy assistant wound dressing training....I would say its opsite that they would use, also known as second skin. (opsite is brand name, made by smith and nephew)
there is a trick to removing it squid! gently lift one corner and pull it taut, strteching it across the area, keeping it close to the surface, it should come away easily and just lift off. ask at the hospital for them to show you how to get it off painlessly, they should know how!
Dee, I had staples, but over the top of them I had a clear sticky dressing, don't know if it is the same one or not? It was like a huge sticky pad, clear and was quite thick. Imagine something like clear contact, but only a lot thicker.
I had one put on after my c/s and it was removed after the 2nd or 3rd day i think? I did it in the shower, thinking that by running hot water over it, it would be better as it would maybe melt the glue or something? It made it slippery and sticky, and harder to handle, but didn't hurt my skin so much in removing. I then had another one put on after that, and the nurses removed it while it was dry (I was lying in bed) and it came away from my skin so much easier than it had when I had done it in the shower. I was freaking out about removing it while dry, but it was better than removing it while it was wet, even though it did pull at the teeny tiny hairs...ouchies!
I had disolvable stitches and then clear tape over the top.
Hurt me when I took it off too, ripping out hairs, ouch!

I took the tape off at the hospital, in the shower on the 4th day, no problems. (I took it off on the 4th day as this is what the midwife told me to do.)
I just put a pad (first the hospital ones, then when I ran out used kotex maternity ones) into my knickers to protect the scar.
I didn't have a problem with seeing it, nor did I have a problem taking the tape off or with any infections at all, I healed really well and my scar looks great.
Yep, I had dissolvable stitches covered by the clear plastic dressing (called opsite). The opsite can stay in place for quite a number of days.
Rachel - No I`m not worried about seeing my wound, I just wondered what he was talking about as I`ve never heard of it before.
Thank you girls, it must be this op site dressing he`s talking about although he said I`d only have internal dissolving stitches and just a dressing for the outside scar so I`m assuming no stitches at all as he said it stays on for 2 weeks. I`ll ask him more this week, I just wasn`t that well last week and wasn`t thinking straight otherwise I would have asked more.
I had the clear dressing no stitches on the outside wound. It was easy to get off after 2 weeks, i did it while i was in the shower and had no problems, it didn't hurt at all. My scar is minimal too. I am pretty sure this is the way they close the wound now instead of stiches etc, mine was done dec 07.
would definently be opsite or tegaderm same thing different brands.
some have an absorbant pad built in to help remove any ooze or blood away from the site and keep it as clean as possible.
yes for removal, pull away diagonally and not upwards so along the skin line just lifting slightly and then away from the area applying pressure over the section still attached to your skin and do it is small sections at a time. = no pain :D
I had this as well. Just internal stitches and a clear dressing over the top that was left on for 2 weeks. Taking it off was a bit tricky, because they barely shaved anything and the dressing was just stuck on over hair. It took me 2 days in the shower to get it off.
I had this tape also and had to make sure they dont use it again this time as I had an allergic reaction to it. It was taken off by a midwife I think on day 2 after c/s as it had blistered all around the edges and I actually ended up with a scar around my c/s scar for ages from it. Did fade and go away eventually though. I am guessing this is pretty rare but my Ob said to remind him this time not to use the same tape again.
I had a similar thing with my last. There were no staples on the outside. I had dissolvable sticthes in and this great big VERY sticky thing over the wound for a while. I can't remember how long now but it was off by the end of the week I think
there are many different clear dressings so im not sure which one he is talking about but it sounds like tegaderm to me or steri strips, its much better as it can stay on longer, is waterproof and allows health professionals to see the wound and this also means less dressing changes and therefore less chance for infection. type those into google images and you will see. they will most likely put steri strips underneath as they act like sutures.
