do i let her wear no knickers??

Ok, DD is 18 months and started showing signs of TT about a month ago, she is doing soooo well! :) Yesterday she went to the potty 5 times, and i only initiated 1 of those times (for her morning wee) -all the others she went by herself without me even asking. :dance:

All the times she goes, she is at home, so i just leave her nudey bum to run around the house (??) Should i be doing this?

This morning i put her on the potty for her morning wee, she did a wee, then i put some knickers on her. About half hour later all was quiet, so i went and checked to see what she was doing, she was on the potty doing a poo (but she still had her knickers on). She kept standing up and looking in the potty with a confused look on her face like "why on earth is there no poo!?" ;)

Needless to say i had one BIG mess on my hands

Should i just leave her with no bottoms on? Or will i regret this decision later on? How do you teach them to pull their knickers down before going?

I have no idea! I'm the first one of all my friends doing the TT thing, so i don't have them to ask questions to.

Please, any advice will be a blessing!

Sunshine seiben i see you did this with your daughter, have you regreted just letting her run nudey? How hard has it been now, teaching her to put her knickers on and off before using the potty?

Tellytubby, I am having the same issues with my dd. I have let her run around nude for ages and shes been really good going on the potty with occassional accident. I think she is ready for tt BUT now we have a huge issue. She wont wear undies, or pull ups for that matter. She absolutely cracks it and I dont want to scare her. Yesterday we went shopping for her to pick out her own undies (she chose upsey daisey), got home....wont put them on. Happy to put them on her head, but not where they are supposed to go. Not sure if this is to do with running around in the nud for so long. I dont know what to do now.....any suggestions? (sorry for hijacking your thread).

We did this with Zander until he got used to it and then slowly introduced undies. It's a hard concept for them to grasp, pulling down their pants, and sometimes even if they get it at 18 months she just might not have the coordination to do it.

I leave Eleanor to run around with nothing on as once you put anything on her she will wet in them but goes to the toilet fine with nothing on. I think you should just leave things a while long and keep trying the undies to see how things go.

yep what Sarah said. Don't forget at that age they are usually still to young to dress themselves.

She's going great guns, just get her to announce when she's going so you can help her with the knickers.

Tellytubby, I accidentally stumbled across your post, I'm glad I found it, especially since you asked me personally.
DD was doing the nude thing for months with pretty much no accidents (only very occasionally a trickle if she couldn't make it to the potty in time. She also started around the same time as your DD (18 or 19 months). Let me just say, your daughter is doing amazingly. What a smart little cookie.
I would stear clear of pull-ups. I find they just confuse them.
Hmmm, I'm sorta stuck with this situation now, not quite knowing how to go on with it as it is getting too cold to run around in the nude. I find it a little hard to transition to undies. She just doesn't get that sometimes she's wearing a nappy and she is allowed to wet her pants. At other times, she's just wearing undies and she should be using the toilet. So I'm at the moment going cold turkey on the nappies to cut out the confusion for her. I found that every time she wears a nappy, we go a couple of steps backwards.

Anyway, to answer your question:
I would let her go without a nappy for a few more weeks until there are no accidents. Then, choose a weekend or a time when you have a couple of days when you can stay home with her, I would put undies on her. No nappies, just undies. Keep telling her to pull them down to go to the potty. My DD got that concept really quickly. I'm sure yours will, too. You will have to be on the ball, as sometimes it's a bit hard for them to pull them down by themselves. And you'll have to help with putting them back on. If you can get her to tell you when she needs to wee, even better.
Reward her (sticckers, lollies & a big song and dance) when she does the right thing. Don't make a big fuss if she has an accident. There are bound to be accidents. Especially if she's tired or sick.
Lol, my DD is pulling her undies down to wee as I type this.
Once she has the hang of this, put pants on her, too. Preferably ones that are easy to pull down, like trackies or PJ pants.
I would try and progress quickly (if I had a do over) and limit outings that require a nappy for a while.
Yesterday, I took DD out for 1 1/2 hours without a nappy. she actually stayed dry. I felt like a broken record, constantly reminding her that she wasn't wearing a nappy and that she should tell me if she needed to wee. I gave her a couple of toilet opportunities, but she didn't take them. I left shortly after a wee to give ourselves the best chance of staying dry. I covered the car seat with a folded up towel to minimise the damage.
If DD sits on the couch watching TV, I place a towel under her, too.

These are just my thoughts at the moment. Obviously, you don't want to put pressure on her, but in hindsight, I think I hampered her own development by confusing her with nappies. For a while, she was taking her nappies off to wee, but after she couldn't when out and about, she stopped trying to take em off and accepted that nappies are ok to wee in. I now regret that.

There will be wees and poos in the undies every now and then. But fortunately we have washing machines these days.

I think you are better off not having to re teach things. So put trainers on her and teach her that she needs to get Mummy to help her take them off to go to the potty.

I am in the same situation.. My Dd is asking to go wee wee a zillion times a day at the moment. Only get lucky a couple times a week as she isn't at that stage where she can hold. so by the time the nappy is off she has already done the wee

I am unsure what to do either. (our Dd's are 3 days apart btw :))

Is it really important for her to wear undies?
DS was into undies for a while and then we just let them slide until we found we haven't used them at all for a very long time - they just add one more step to the pulling pants down process (he's not totally nudies anymore, he WILL deign to wear clothes now!) and I couldn't find a real reason to insist on them. The staff at creche have been really supportive saying they don't even care if the kids wear undies - whatever makes it easier for them to self-toilet is fine by them...though they have to wear clothes ;)
I also found that training pants are a great way to retain customer loyalty and increase sales and they have very little benefit for the consumer. After we used up our sample packs (from a market research company) I never used anymore and DS's toilet learning just took off.

i wasn't brave enought (and have WHITE rental carpet to worry about), so didn't do the "nude tt-ing" thing. We went with cloth training pants (waterproof outer, absorbency in the middle and a "feel wet" inner - so my DD could feel wet, when she wet her trainers.

protected carseat with a special piddle mat (from stokkles and haggus)

got a potette for when at beach, park (places where we're too far away from a loo, when she needs to go).

potty to put in the boot of the car, for when she needed to go, and we were driving in the car.

brollysheet for the bed, to avoid changing sheets at night.

using the cloth trainers, tt-ing took about three weeks for us. I don't think i could have done it with the terry towelling training pants, too much mess for me - and the nude situation didn't suit our floor coverings.

my child is 2.5yo now, and still needs lots of help with getting trainers and clothing up and down (even tracksuit pants and elastic waisted jeans), esp as she uses a big step just to sit on the toilet. lots of bumps on the head, were the result of her trying to do this herself (she would fall, and hit her head on loo door - :wall: literally!

i don't mind helping her with the clothing, she's grasped the concept of bodily urges and when she needs the toilet, that's the biggest thing, she's done that, so all the rest, is just small issues really. i am there every loo visit anyway, to monitor her balance on the big step, encourage her, celebrate what she CAN do herself. i want her to know how proud i am, of her achievements. i have to guess alot, as her speech is delayed, not many words. it's amazing how much she can communicate, by MIMING things, instead of words.

i had met a mum of a two year old, who could totally dress himself, so i had been thinking my child was really backwards (with co-ordination skills needed to dress yourself). now i'm hearing many 2.5yo cannot dress themselves.

i did read tips (tribal baby website) about alternative clothing options for tt-ing in winter e.g babylegwarmers, spilt crotch pants, skirts with no knickers.

Mayaness, I agree with your point about putting pants on INSTEAD of undies, rather than doing both. I have done that, too.

Gigi,I would be worried about white carpet, too. Actually, I sooooo wish we didn't have any carpet (ours is nasty brown speckled stuff, though, so looked filthy, even when it was brand new), especially now that we're TT. DD loves tipping the potty out over the carpet. Grrrrrr!
And yes, i found those terry towelling trainers without a waterproof layer totally useless. Wee still leaks out of them and undies are just as good at catching poos. The only reason I have a few of those terry ones is because DD is quite skinny and those come in a size 1 while most undies start at size 2-3 and are too big for her.
I personally found that skirts or dresses without undies were really hard for her to handle. half the time, the skirt was hanging into the potty. Legwarmers however can be brilliant if you wanna do the bare bottom thing in cooler weather. But they don't teach them to pull down clothes...

Aussienic, it is such a good sign that your DD can tell you when she needs to go. Even if she can't hold on long enough for you to take her pants off. she will get that control soon. But it is great she is so aware of her bodily functions.

I found that once they seem to get the hang of it, consistency is the key.

So, try her in undies for a few days. Put a towel under her when she sits on the couchin case of accidents. Limit outings (or preferably, stay at home for a few days to a week), But DON'T put a nappy on her apart from sleep times. Let her have some inevitable accidents. She will learn from them. Once she gets it at home, start short outings. Leave after a wee. Keep telling her that she has no nappy on and will need to tell you so you can take her to the loo. Have the potty in the car and maybe one of those travel toilet seats. I sit DD straight on a normal seat, though. If you go to someone's place, show her the toilet when you get there. give her the opportunity to use it. or alternatively, take the potty with you and put it somewhere she can see. Ask her at regular intervals whether she needs to go. Maybe even pull her pants down and sit her on it when you feel it has been a while since her last wee. but don't force her.
Don't be disheartened if it doesn't work. She's still very young. And it's not a race.
