Washing out those yellow stains from prev babies clothes

Hi All,

I have been sorting through all those clothes I stored from DS to see what I do want to keep for this bub.

DRAT but where do those yellow stains around the neck come from :doh:. I know they weren't there when I put them away but I hear it happens as the clothes age and the hidden stains come out. Nice.

Can anyone suggest what to do to get rid of them? I have thought of soaking in napisan but had heard that salt water could do the trick. Anyone had any success with getting rid of these marks?

Try washing them normally and hanging them out to dry in the sun first.

The sun works wonders for breaking down orange food stains that haven't come out in the wash (pumpkin, carrot etc) - by the time the clothes are dry the stain is gone just like magic...so this is an easy thing to try first before you start mixing up concoctions in the laundry.

I had the same problem and i just washed as per normal then hung in the sun and the marks came out. Like with cloth nappies. The stains disappear in the sun. HTH

I was wondering the same thing as i got most of Peanut's clothes from a friend of mine who had a little baby boy too. And about 5-6 peices of clothing have huge yellow stains around the neck.

So just wash them and sun dry them huh? Sounds nice and easy. I was thinking i would have to go for the whole soaking for a day in fiesta or something.

I also have my baby bunny rug (now 20 yrs old!) and it has stains and stuff and a little bit of mould staining as it's been in storage for so long. How would i get this whole heap of stains out? Same as the clothes or would i actually have to do the soaking thing??

adding half a cup of bi-carb to your wash is also really good for removing stains - then of course sun dry :)

The mould thing is tricky. I had a mouldy pillowcase and tried a salt solution, scrubbing with sea salt, soaking in Napisan and dabbing the mould with clove oil and none of that worked. I just kept chucking it in the wash and hanging it out in the sun every time I did a white load and eventually the mould washed out (but it would have been at least 15 washes...probably more).

Given the age of the bunny rug that may not be ideal. I would patch test for colour-fastness with an Exit Mould type of product and if it was all good leave it in for just a couple of minutes on the mouldy marks and then rinse and get it in the wash asap.

As for the other stains...I would still try a normal wash and sun dry first so you can see what you are dealing with...maybe spraying a bit of pre-wash stain remover first. Then go for the soaking option if you have to.

You know i always wondered what those stains were from and looking at the old baby clothes i have they actually look like drool marks from when bub was teething.

I recently washed some of my knitted baby clothes (which are now 30 years old!) and to our suprise, the old stains came out! I put Nappisan (the in-wash type) in with my normal laundry powder then washed as usual in the machine - no soaking required. Only one outfit required three washes, the rest were clean after the first wash!

I noticed the same thing on my first daughters newborn clothes when I pulled them out for the new baby. I'm guessing that it's actually milk vomit and some of the stomach acid has come up with it perhaps and over time discoloured the fabric?! Just a guess! I just soaked mine in napisan and washed as normal. I hung them out in the sun too, so maybe that had something to do with the stains disappearing... I just couldn't be sure.

I`ve just recently gone through all my Ds`s newborn clothes and found the same yellow stains and like you they weren`t there when they were packed away, I`m putting it down to old milk with has been refluxed back up.

Anyway I soaked mine in a bucket of napisan then washed as normal, it all came out but I have had some trouble getting it out of the cardigan`s.

It's a pretty solid blanket. Although it's double lined cotton i'm not sure how the thin top layer of cotton will go with mass washing.

I think i might try a colour fast napisan soaking then a couple of washes with sun drying.

Just have to see how it goes i guess. Hehe
