Can you have Syntocin for 3rd Stage if VBACing?

I'm having my first appointment with my midwife from our Birthing Centre in the next week or so and only thought of this today. I know that induction is not good if you're attempting a VBAC, but what about a managed 3rd stage with Syntocin to expel the placenta? Wouldn't that be risky for the same reason as induction?

Just wondering if anyone knows?

What are the natural methods to help along delivery of the placenta? I've heard that breastfeeding baby will help, I guess that's because it will produce Oxytocin?

I had a vba2c in march and I had synto to manage the third stage. My ob gives it to all vbac women. I requested not to have it but had a bleed and needed it :( .
But the answer to your question is yes you can have it. The reason they don't like giving drugs during labor is basically it places too much stress on your scar. After the baby is out the contractions to expell the placenta are MUCH milder. TBH I diddn't even feel the contractions to expell my placenta. My ob said "ok little push" I thaught it was weird at the time but pushed. Then he asked me to cough and that was it. :)

Yep - as Julie said it is safe to have as a VBAC - my midwife will be giving me synto for the 3rd stage as it avoids the 'hidden' bleed that may happen with anyone. But ask your caregiver to explain it in full - I certainly did!

I meet with my birthing centre midwife tomorrow so I will ask her to explain it in full. I seem to remember hospital policy was to give the injection if the 3rd stage took more than an hour or if there was a bleed, but I'll ask her about that too. You can never know too much about this stuff!

Managing the third stage of labour has become the norm in many hospitals and I disagree that it is required across the board as it is administered.

There are many health benefits to birthing your placenta as naturally as you birth your baby. I birthed my placenta naturally with 3 of my vaginal births.

If you have a complicated or instrument delivery or if there is maternal illness then a managed third stage is sometimes needed.

Placentas just like babies take time and the right environment to be birthed. Allowing the cord to stop pulsing, loving your baby, cuddling her, letting her lick at the breast and also consciously knowing that your job is not done with the birth of your baby. Your body still has to complete the birthing task.

Unfortunately many birthing environments don't acknowledge this. Women are congratulated (as they should be!) the cameras click there is an energy of completion once the baby is born. But there is more to do!

One of my placentas took about 40 minutes and I actually have experienced quite painful contractions with the birth of some of my placentas. But, it's part of the process.

I believe that allowing this process to happen - with the full awareness that it is a very impotant & sacred part of the birthing process.

It's about lettig go of the pregnancy energetically as the placenta nurtured the baby - birthing the placenta signals that now it's the mothers role to nurture.

My appointment with my midwife was today. The hospital policies aren't as bad as I thought and it seems neither my age (35) nor the likely size of my baby (DS was 4.3kg) are going to be problems. They have 'telemetry' monitoring so I can get off the bed, move around and even hop in the bath! They'll let me go to 42 weeks, then do a membrane sweep before considering another c-section. I don't have to have a managed 3rd stage unless I really need it. In fact, it all sounds pretty good. Now I just have to wait :)
