How many sheet sets do I get?

I'm 35 weeks and panicking about getting bubs things ready! How many sheet sets do you think I will need for the bassinet? I've been told bub will spew and newborn nappies will leak :rolleyes: . I am planning to use fitted sheets only and swaddle bub in muslin wrap then a merino wool swaddle. Is this appropriate? What's your experience been? How often do you need to change sheets. Does wee and runny poo go through everything? :doh:

Get a couple of sets so you can wash one and use the other.

I used to put a flannel nappy under my boys in the beginning to protect the sheets from spew/poo LOL!

I didnt have a prob with newborn leaking nappies or spewing but I used to put a cloth nappy under her head sometimes so I could just change that if there was a spew rather than the whole sheet.

I never bought the top sheets, just the fitted sheet. 3 would be plenty if you dont have a dryer. Maybe if you do have a dryer 2 will be enough.

I would put the fitted sheet on and then wrap bub up and then put another blanket over the top of her tucked in the sides. Like they did in hossy. They will show you in their cribs.

Thanks Trish. I was thinking the same about flannel nappies. Is it considered safe by SIDS though? They recommend not having and loose sheets etc in the cot?:dunno:

I agree, two has always been plenty for me.

I'm borrowing some from a friend but was thinking of getting a flanelette set too.

Thanks Alibaby. Yeah, not long now - getting really nervous!

I started out with 2 sets of cradle sheets (you can always get more if you find you need them) and I used to put a terry flat nappy underneath the baby while they were sleeping (tucked in of course so they couldn't suffocate in it) and that way if they vomitted (never had a problem with leaking nappies) I could just change that rather than the whole bed. I also found using a terry flat on the change table was far better than a cover because I could remove it and wash it without much effort. I needed to change the cover of my change table a lot when my babies were little (but that is my experience, everyone is a bit different).

I wrapped my babies till they were a little bit older and found the muslin wraps weren't large enough after the first couple of weeks. The cradle top sheet was a great size for wrapping and when they got too big for that, I used a cot sheet. So if you buy a full sheet set, it won't go to waste.

Anyway, happy shopping, washing and planning :) Not long to go now . . .

I only had a small bassinet so i used to put flanny nappies down to stop spew and poo as well, and cause the bassinet is small its about the same size as the nappy so i could tuck it under the matteress just like an extra sheet so you don't have to worry about bubs suffocating and stuff:-) Hope that helps

I'm not sure about the SIDS guidelines re: cloth nappies, but you can wrap/tuck them around the bassinette mattress so they are fitted IYKWIM?

That is what I do and it works fine!!

I had 2 fitted bassinet sheets and have 2 fitted cot sheets. I bought them at baby bunting as a 2 pack of bassinet fitted sheets and individual for cot fitted sheets.

I have also always put cloth nappy under head in bassinet and cot, only stopped at about 7 months.


if your bassinet is too big to use a cloth nappy you could wrap a cotton bunny rug ariund mattress and tuck in.

i just use folded up cot flat sheets in the bassinette! tucked in of course!! saves buying bassinette or cradle sheets

At a pinch you can always just fold a flat single sheet in half for a cot. I had waaaay too many sheets for our cots... but you can often have never enough if they get a bout of gastro. I'd say buy 3 sets of fitted cot sheets and about 3 flat single bed sheets to have on reserve. You will use them eventually when your child moves into their single bed. Looking back the time spent in a cot was so brief. Sad really, I miss using my cot.

ETA: ah I forgot you were asking about bassinette sheets... but yes, no more than 3 I'd say. I had too many of them too. Infact do you want some? PM me if you ever run out! Otherwise I'll be keeping them until I'm a grandma! LOL

I just use the cot sheets in the bassinet - just need to tuck them in a bit more under the mattress, saves buying two different sizes. We dont use a top sheet as we have our baby in a sleeping bag with a blanket tucked in on cold nights

I reckon having 3 is the go - one to use, one in the wash and a spare :)
